ilu emnriam l.et me but live my life from year to year lVith forward face and unreluctant soul, Not hastening to, nor turning from the goal: Not mourning for the things that disappear In the dim past, nor holding back in fear From what the future veils: but with a whole And happy heart that pays its toll To youth and age, and travels on with cheer. So let the way wind up the hill or down. Though rough or smooth, the journey will be joyg Still seeking what I sought but when a boy, New friendships, high adventure, and a crown, I shall grow old, but never lose life's zest, Because the roads last turn will be the best. -Henry Van Dyke. 1Sonnel adopted by Mr. Douglass as his philosophy of lifel The Clock of Life is wound but once, and no man hath the power To tell just when the hands will stop, at late or early hour. Now is the only time you own: live, love, toil with a Wt'll, Place no faith in tomorrowg for the Clock may then be still.' The stanza just quoted also expresses a part of the philosophy of Stephen A Douglass. whose very close association the writer has been privileged to enjoy for the last sixteen years. Mr. Douglass was always a man of dignity, unbending graciously when the occasion was appropriate. He was a methodical administrator, a planner at long range, and one who considered the views of others. To youth he was long-suffering, patient, and gentle: to his faculty he was genial. though exacting in the matter of high professionalism: to his position he was devoted, never begrudging time spent in the service of the school he loved. His place among men may be measured by the profound shock his passing gave to all who knew him. Students will ever be reminded of his gracious leadership when they sing these lines of their song, dear also to him: Calm, serene, reserved. and noble, Unassailed by strife. D. H. WEIR, Assistant Principal, Central High School. ln the death of Stephen A Douglass, the Central High School has lost a devoted leader and the Saint Louis Public School System, one of its most able and honored educators. As a teacher of science. he developed in his students an attitude of inquiry into the practical aspects of scientinc principles: as a counsellor, he strengthened those in need of help through his friendliness and kindly consideration: as a member of the community. he emphasized the influence of beautiful environment in the moulding of character: as an executive, he always tempered justice with mercy and was forceful without a demonstration of authority. His life was gentle, and the elements So mixed in him, that Nature might stand up And say to all the world, This was a man! JOHN RUSH POWELI.. Assistant Superintendent of Instruction.
