X 'K 14543: 31441411 4-6, THE RED ANDBLACK as much as he could remember of them and left for the neighborhood show Two susplcxous flgures hesltantly p proached the now seemingly deserted house Each held hls right hand over a bulky hlp pocket They stopped a mo ment to exchange whispers and the gas light threw a ghastly pallor on their faces Beads of persplratlon stood out upon their foreheads The smaller of the two was affllcted wlth a nervous twltchmg of the muscles ln hls face The other licked hrs llps with a tongue whlch seemed cleft to the roof of hls mouth All rlght let s get a move on It was thelr first Job The bolder of the two rang the bell Cettmg no answer he rang again Then he turned to hlS partner Well Shrimp lt looks like the coasts clear Shrimp nervously shook hls head extracted a skeleton key and adjusted lt ln the key ho e They carefully entered the vestnbule There was a look of triumph on Boy as the taller of the two was called and even Shrlmp attempted a half scared smile Boy nudged hlm So far so good huh? Thelr Joy was short llved for almost lmmedlately Shrlmps face took on the look of a hunted man hls eyes bulged his lips were dralned of thelr color and the twltchlng of the muscles ln hls face Increased threefold As for Boy hls swaggerlng alr dlsappeared he stared ln credlbly at Shrlmp gulped twlce hrs adam s apple worklng queerly They had left the door slightly ajar but now they neared lt for the sake of convenience Two voices floated down to them from the room above lr must be explamed that the Cromplors llved on the second floor Yep lt was a deep and sonorous bass l got my SUSPICIODS and lm going to confirm em Ya know l dont llke the looks of them two guys nohow lve sworn to the cop to keep my eyes on them and when old ake says something he stlcks to lt thlck and thm Thats the way to talk ake You leaving now3 Leaving nothlng l m going down the front way for a mmute lve got a lm germg susplclon that them two guys are on these here premises rlght this mmute That was enough Boy and Shrxmp the house slammlng the door behind them and ran down the quxet street as lf demons possessed them nor slackened then' speed untll there was considerable dlstance between themselves and the house An hour later the Cromplors returned ane stlfled a yawn as she lnserted the key Into the keyhole You d never thunk anything would happen ln this nelghbor hood lts so quiet ThlS key behaves queerly Mother Wonder what s the mat ter Ah there As the five trooped into the vestibule strams of music greeted thelr ears After all my instructions joe left the radlo golng Wont he ever learn to be more careful3 Ednth looked disgusted Think of all the money hes wasted Thrrtu um , I 4' , . . . a - . Fu Dunn ADA JEAN DA JEAN was a waxtress She had seemed to fit lnto the atmosphere of the Orange Blossom Tea Room A cranky old lady named Mr Llnden al ways came IH about three o clock ln the afternoon for a sandwlch and a cup of green tea Ada ean never had llked her because no matter how hot her tea was she always sent xt back to be made hotter One afternoon she had eaten about half of her sandwich when she stared down at somethmg ID her plate She called Ada .lean over to her and her mouth was drawn together as If she had eaten a green persnmmon l cant bear to look she said turn mg her face away Tell me what that IS on my plate l blt mto lt' Ada Jean looked then turned scarlet The cook dld have false teeth She won dered then she stammered out the truth Why It s xt s a tooth' My heavens above' sand Mrs Lm den tlppmg her chair over rn an attempt to get her coat on more hurr1ed'y What kmd of a place IS thls anyway3 l dont thmk l ll ever be able to eat agam Oh' she sald rn a famt tone as she put her hand over her stomach and opened her mouth It was really rude of Ada ean to start laughing but l hardly blame her You see when Mrs Linden opened her mouth Ada saw that one of her teeth ln the top row was mlssmg' LITTLE MRS PRATT Llttle Mrs Pratt was elghty three years old She wasnt over five feet tall and her wlthered frame was dellcate and thm She never wore black dresses just dalnty ro e colored or lavender srlks that reached to her shoe tops Sometimes when she was golng to the Methodlst church she would wear gray She lived alone m a little yellow frame house down on Gadsden Road and one rn ght see her at any tlme ln the forenoon step llghtly down her petuma path to the road carrying a lace parasol and plcklng her way carefully through the sand to the Boulevard When the street car stopped Ihzrly Ihft L-1 1 l I ' U1 1 I F Lf-..
