Central High School, Columbia, Tennessee VOL. XL MAY 23, 1956 NO. l Flash! Catalina: This is Catalina Verth reporting for station WAVE. The following program is a personal in- terview of Professor Zeena Pierpont of the University of Satellite 260. Professor Pierpont is interrupting her great archeological expedition in the Dimple of the Universe. She and her fellow archeologists have unearthed the lost ruins of the Dimple of the Universe, formerly known as Columbia. Their main in- terest renters around the old CHS building which was erected in the summer of 1956. Professor Pierpont, would you tell us some of the more valuable ob- jects yon have discovered? Professor: One of the most in- teresting things we have found is the history of the class of 1956. It was, found in the cornerstone of the Central High School building along with some other interesting items. I should like to read you some of the highlights of that history. "The class of 1956 entered CHS in 1953 with two hundred and forty- one members. We chose john t 1' Porter as President and Vice-Presi- dent. The secretary was Audrey Derryberry, and the treasurers were Frankie Albright and Gary Wicks. Mrs. joe Hayden Adams, Mrs. C. F. Arrants, Miss Mary Virginia Graham, Transcript From Station Wave! fp, If x . lit t I I, Vt Miss Clare O'Nea1, Mr. Richard C. Knight, Mr. Lawrence G. Murphy, and Mr. Frank Seagraves were class sponsors. We were constantly confused by the placement of the rooms and more than ever by the cafeteria sys- tem, but by Christmas we had all learned our way around. The parties, dances, football and basketball games kept us busy dur- ing our spare time. All the Latin students looked forward to the Latin Banquet, which was held on the Ides of March." Catalina: That is all very interest- ing, Professor Pierpont. Did you find anything else significant of the class of 1956 during the year of 1953? Professor: Yes, we did. One of the relics we found in the excavation was a trophy won by the Algebra II math team of 1953. The team members were Amaryllis Hale and John Porter. Members of the other two math teams were Joyce Roland and Elden Bennett. A copy of The Lighthouse, the play of the class of 1956, which was produced in 1953, was also found in the cornerstone. I think that this play is one of the many indications we have that that particular class was far advanced in civiliztion. How- ever, there are many other indica- tions. A second portion of the history was as follows: "We returned to school again after summer vacation in the fall of 1954. In our first class meeting of the year we elected Bill Lakey as President, Gary Wicks as Vice-President, Alpha jo Scott as Secretary, and Audrey Derryberry and Bobby Ikard as Treasurers. This year we were kept busy by planning for the Junior-Senior Re- ception at which we were hosts, After much deliberation, The Four Winds and the Seven Seas was chggen as the theme. The visitors were taken to the four corners of the earth,-Paris, New Orleans, the South Seas, and the Arctic Circle. Much hard work was done by the mem. bers of the class, but the results were wonderful. Everyone had an en- joyable evening." Let me say again that the Class of 1956 must have been an outstand- ing class. We found a copy of the program of their junior-Senior Re- ception. It was a masterpiece. Part
