CLASS HISTORY Late 1n August 1947 under the coachlng of M1ss O Neal Mrs Rlchards Mlss Wood fin Mr Gardner and Mr Shap1ro a squad of 207 wandered on to the C H S football field Thls team was to play an exper1 enced and well tralned profess1onal team The whlstle was blown and 0510131 J R Baker called the representat1ve captalns to the center of the field B1lly Denn1s co capta1n of the L1on Cubs won the toss and chose to recelve W J F1eld capta1n of the L1ons plcked the north goal These parted and returned to thelr respec t1ve teams The whlstle was blown agaln and the game had begun For the first part of the first quarter the game was very close One team gamed then had to k1Ck and the other ga1ned and had to k1Ck No score' Near the end of the first quarter Coach Shap1ro recelved an offer from the TKM team wh1ch he accepted Th1s left the L1on Cubs 1n a spot but shortly Mrs Ramey took h1s place The first quarter ended w1th L1on Cubs scormg a safety and the score stood 2 0 The L1on Cubs entered the second quar ter wxth only 175 on the squad and two new coaches Warf and Ingrum That quarter co capta1n Van Hooser took charge Aftera struggle the Cubs came w1th1n scormg d1stance however they were only able to score a field goal before the end of the half The score then stood 5 0 As the th1rd quarter began 153 Cubs led by Dan Hardlson sleeplly returned to the play1ng field to meet the refreshed LIOUS The Cubs had h1red three new coaches Arrants Bryant and Ralph The Cubs seemed to wake up 1n th1s quarter T the surprxse of the L1ons the Cubs cheered on by 1950 Sen1ors marched 1nto pay d1rt and also made the extra polnt As the fourth quarter began the score stood 12 0 Wlth the Cubs surpr1s1ng everyone The Cubs st1ll led by Dan Hardlson en tered the last quarter w1th only 135 players The coach staff remamed the same though the L1ons suffered one casualty L S Duke alternate capta1n of the L1ons spramed h1s ankle and was replaced by J R Matthews Otherwxse both teams looked good Durlng th1s quarter the Cubs scored early pepped up by refresh ments served by one younger group during a t1me out The Cubs contmued t charge scorlng agam Near the close of the game the Cub squad stood at 132 The uncle of the players called them and they were unable to HFIISTI the game At the end of the game the score was 26 0 El1zabeth Herndon and Jack Van Hooser were presented w1th Babe Ruth Sports manshlp awards The latter was also named on the All State Team The v1ctor1ous Cubs were more surprlsed than the loslng L1ons BILLY DENNIS H zstorzan - - - 64 rv 9 9 . , . . . . !
