No sooner had the laughter died than I found myself vrevxrng the hustle and bustle of a large newspaper Off1CC In the midst of the confusion was E J Goslln the editor rn chief As T gazed Wlth aston shment 1 heard loud cheers and as my vision cleared I saw two men whom I recognized as Harry Petty and Warne Thomas The cheers were for them because they had Just invented a motorless automobrle Next I saw a large banner waving in the air and on it were printed these startllng words Anne Harvlll will make her radio debut tonight as a slnger Her feature number will be Yes There Aint No Honey In a Bumble Bee s St1ng Before I could recover from this wondrous sight I saw books books and more books As I looked more closely, I could read the tltle of one It was How to Chew More and Bigger Wads of Gum written by Mary Gardner and Betty Derry berry The scene agaln changed abruptly and I saw the rnterlor of a crowded night club Moving among the many people quickly and effrcrently were P D Llggett and J D Matthews the headwarters Well the next sight was quite fam1l1ar for it was at dear old C H S Some changes had been made however for I saw Jack Cecll not M1ss Hale presldrng over the English Department Then I saw a fashionable dress shop ln Chicago and the charmlng owner was Dot Cec1l Her lovely models were Mary Alice Dodson Martha Fleming Frances Brown Jean Davis and Evelyn Walker Wlth startling clarity I next saw our capitol rn Washington and coming down the steps were three charming secretaries Their features gradually becaml clear and I knew them to be Ella Coffee Aurella Lovell and Pallen Carpenter This vision faded and I viewed what appeared to be a dance studio 1n Los Angeles managed by James Kelran and Paul Cecil who were busy teaching young Hollywood hopefuls the latest steps ng over statlon XYZ The trio was composed of Elwyn Galloway Margaret Flte and Margaret Davidson Next I saw several well managed farms and their respective owners were George Campbell W1ll1am Craig J W Harmon Dorrrs Gilliam Joe Shaw and John Ross Anderson Later I was permitted to look rnto the office of a big busmess man He was Jack Weatherford edrtor rn chief of Esquire Hls secretary and adviser was James Dugger Williams I then saw a place where everyone could be made beautiful It was a large beauty shop rn Memphis owned and operated by Joy Freld and Evelyn Abernathv Among their operators there appeared such familiar faces as those of Mary Evelyn Adkins Louise Brown Mildred Marlin and Edythe Nichols In the twinkling of an eye Columbia was again before my eyes There walk ing down the street and pushing baby carriages were Martha and Mary Turner They each had a set of twin boys Once more the scene changed to New York where I saw Juanita Thompson Dorothy Ussery Harrrette Sharp Ruby Rea and Starlrng Pressnell as famous and very beautiful mannequrns Suddenly a microphone appeared before me and standlng behind rt was Imogene Hyatt who was very convlncrnv as Ma Perkins Beside her was her loyal daughter Faye played by Vrrginra Holliday I next saw a happy and successful business man He was our class presr dent George Knox married to Josephine Jackson and doing so well ln business that hrs secretary Neva Norton was over worked For a moment I was permitted to see a motion plcture rn production The star of the picture was June Garrett Her flaming locks made her a lovely sub1ect or Technicolor LIKCWISE Ellen Gibbs was a famous actress from another studio Then I heard the haunting strams of native muslc and on a small island ll the Paclfrc Elizabeth Moore was teaching the natives how to dance Now I saw an advertisement for No Smeer Lipstick This nroduct was mtrr Page Eighteen . . We chose our motto because now more than ever we as Amerrcan crtrzens have a duty to perform As we look rnto our future we see a troubled world but wrth our hearts full of hope and rnsprred by these words Duty our Gurdrng Sta Vrctory our Arm we go forth bravely and cheerfully to meet whatever the future may hold MARTHA TURNER CLASS PROPHECY Hear ye' Hear ye' all ye people of Columbra to the words of wrsdom from thc lrps of your prophet who now speaketh unto you what hath been revealed unto her even as rt hath been decreed by the powers that be For rt has come to pass that the verl of the future hath been rent rn twarn even as rt was rent rn the days of the wlse prophets of old and the Sprrrt of th+ prophe y hath descended from the spheres to envelop my soul wrth her mystrc power I have been chosen as the one of thrs great and good people the Class of 1942 to dream strange dreams and to see strange vrsrons of the glorres of the vears yet to be I lament that the future of th1S great and glorrous class Sh0lllf1 depend upon me But behold' even as the cry of weakness drd ascend from the long sufferrng soul of your prophet a vorce from the heavens spake unto her even ln the words of old sayrng Hear now my words Then the curtarn of the drm Beyond was rolled back and I gazed at w1ll down the long vrsta of thrngs yet to be down the avenues of a strange land For as I looked rnto the land of the future I could drscern the famrlrar shapes of these farr and radrant ber rgs who were once my classmates now changed and transformed rnto crtrvens of the world It came to pass that the verl before mrne eyes grew yet more and more thrn through the rntensrty of my vrsron and behold I could see them even as rf the rntervenrng years were not at all Even as I marveled I heard sweet strarns of musrc and whom should I see but Chrck Shelton leadrng hrs own band wrth Sara Frances Beasley as hrs vocalr t and H B Johnson as hrs featured clarrnet player Then there flashed upon my vrsron the scene of a weddrng and Catherrne Allen made a lovely brrde comrng down the arsle to meet Jack Waldrop I also saw Kathleen Galloway happrly marrred and lrvmg rn Hawarr where her husband As I gazed agarn I saw Jane Hamblrn Batts as a famous playwrrght and Jr n Bevans as a famous star of stage screen and radro 'Ihen whom should I see but Mrller Pmkleton rn Tyrone Powers coveted place rn the hearts of the natrons ladres Qurckly the scene changed to Colurcbra where I saw Anne Cannon as post mrstress Srnce she had so much experrence wrth marl rn hrgh school she should be qurte effrcrent rn thrs posrtron I next saw Grdeon Farmer and Russell Gambrll now football coaches at Van derbrlt Unrversrty Russell was as he had hoped to be a bachelor On a large stage rn Hollywood I saw Marguarrte Bundrant one of the world s best tap dancers and Dalcomb Poag her equally famous partner From afar I heard the playrng of a crrcus band and wrth the crrcus I recognrzed Glenn Krnnard as the elephant trarner and Mary Margaret Erwrn as the bare back r1der As I lrstened rntently I heard the boonrrng xorce of a great orator and rt was none other than Brlly Akrn who was the Democratrc candrdate for Presrdent Adtran Fox was hrs opponent a the Republrcan candrdate Even as I lrstened I heard another xorce famrlrar set strange It was not Walter Wrnchell as I had frrst thought but our own Bob Wrllramson Next I saw a large court room where John Haywood was a famous lawyer For even though vanqurshed he could argue strll Before I had trme to thrnk upon thrs I heard loud laughter cornrng from a theater and there entertarnrng the audrence were those famous comedlans Henry Shelby and Peggy Donaho Page Seventeen , . - . 1 'i , , , . , - 0 . . c , , ' rr ,V n ' ' . . , ' . . , , ' y , . 1 , n A ' u ' Y 1 , , . , 7 ' . duced by Anne Lrgon and Josephme Ledbetter Farlss Parks and Ellzabeth Journey put up the money for the manufacturmg and advertlsmg Agam I heard loud nolses Thls t1me lt was a f1ght H D Whlteslde th I-leavywelght Champlon of the World was bemg challenged by Howard Dalton The Klller 'lhexr managed Raymond McMeen and Ewmg Neeley were ve1y anxlous as to the outcome I dlscovered also that Paul P1ckle Jxmmy Morrow and Jesse Pxnkleton were trymg to sw1m the Pac1f1c Ocean At the t1me Jlmmy was leadlng by two strokes B1ll1e Harmon was the next classmate to be vlewed She was a brllllant wo man sclentlst She had Just dlscovered a way to extract energy from a snowflake and make enough electr1c current to make the water flow uphxll at Niagara Falls Almost as famous was Dorothy Seagraves who was a famous planlst playmg ln Carnegle Hall Agam I saw a scene ln Tennessee Mxldred Sneed D1x1e Ruth Watson Adel' Stewart and Ida Renfro were on a farm raxslng fme blooded Tennessee Walkmg horses At th1s t1me I was permltted to llsten rn on the Annual Conventlon of the Wmdy Llars Club MHFIOD Wh1tt1k9l was Pres1dent of the club Alma Pugh who had recently won the DTIZG for telhng the blggest l1e was a guest of hm or The prmclpal speaker was Sarah Pruett Some other members whom I knew were Catherme Matthews Helen Love Annle Dor1s Jacobs and Wllma Kerr To my amazement I next saw Iwora Mar Thomas as the owner of a large banana plantatlon 1n South Amerlca Another charmmg volce I heard Thls t1me lt belonged to EUHICC Owen whc was on a lecture tour abroad As her volce faded 1n the dlstance the V611 vsas drawn over m1ne eyes shut Img out from my v1s1on the Th1ngs to Be and I turned mme eyes back to the Th1ngs that Are sure that as coming events cast then shadows before only falr and talented members of the Class of 42 ANN HARDISON CLASS IDEALS Durmg the past four years the class of 1942 has set many goals These arms of attalnment or these standards of excellence toward whlch most of us have been str1v1ng are our class 1deals A hlgh and 1nclus1ve goal we set for ourselves was to be good cltlzens 1n th1s school and thus to prepare and tram ourselves to be good c1t1zens wherever we mav go after we leave th1s s hool whether It be to another school 1nto the bus mess world or 1nto home l1fe We want to gxve to Amerlca cltxzens who have lcqulred hablts of reverence obedlence and loyalty crtlzens who have the appre c1at1on for the good m l1fe and c1t1zens who are honest and mdustrxous If we are honest and mdustrlous surely we must succeed' Today more than eve before rn the hrstory of Amerxca we need rellable trustworthy c1t1zens Another element of good c1t1zensh1p IS COODSI'3f,lOIl We have trled to work ogether to accompl1sh those thlnvs Wh1Ch were for the common good of all Here ln school as well as elsewhere we knew that work could be done better and more qulckly 1f each one d1d h1S part L adershlp IS also a tralt of good 1t1zens1hp We, therefore have made et forts to prepare ourselves to take respons1b1l1ty to develop a sp1r1t of self conf1 dence and optlmxsm and to acqune hablfs of perseverance In general we have looked forward to a full and useful l1fe In order that we mlght have a full l1fe we have trled to cultxvate mcllnatrons toward the good and to curb those mcllnatlons toward the bad for the good thmgs In the world make l1fe full and worth whlle We haxe been strnmg to mtensxfy the power to thmk to observe and to prepare ourselves to meet xx 1th mtelllgence the problems wlth whxch vse shall be confronted Page Nlneteen . , ' , ' , , ' ' .
