September 1 1940 Today I am a Junror There were rust 146 of us to enter our class thrs year Many of the grrls have marrred durrng th summer Most of us however are more ambrtrous and studlous for we realrze that our frnal goal rs drawrng much nearer February 7 1941 I have just returned from the receptron wh ch we the Junrors gave for the Seniors After many weeks of workrng and strarnrng our brarns to thlnk of somethrng to make the Senrors have a good trme we decrded to have the receptron rn the form of a c1r us We felt lrke KldS agarn eatrng pop corn balls drrnkrng prnk lemonade and watchrng the crrcus arrrmals perform Ma 14 1941 '1lllS mornrng we Junrors decorated for Senror Class Day 'Ihe class colors were red and Jvhrte What a trme ave had when some prnk flowers were brought rnstead of red ones' Qeptember 1 1942 Today I have come to the last round rn the hrgh school ladder For eleven years I haxe wanted for thrs day For three years I had llstened wrth fear to storres of hrstory Today rt happened' I was rn my hrstory class only frve mlnutes when Qocrates descended upon me ln all hrs glorv February 6 1942 Tonrght the Junrors entertarned us wrth a wonderful receptron Just rmagrne our enjoyrng somethmg wrthout havrng to work weeks before For the frrst trme I realrzed the glo y of berng a Senror February 27 1942 All the Senrors came to school today dressed up 'Ihe grrls had great brg bows rn therr harr the boys were dressed rn overalls and all the fr eakrsh outfrts they could frnd I shall never forget some of the looks of dlsgust on the teachers faces when they saw us Aprrl 10 942 After two weeks of trymg to get out of classes to pracucc Stunt Nrght we gave rn our estrmatlon a perfect perform ance I hope everyone enjoyed rt as much as we emoycd workrng on rt May 25 1942 Tomorrow rs Class Dav There are only 63 grrls and 39 boys t graduate What has happened to those 115 who are not here to recerve drplomas w th uso I have always though' that I would be very happy when my school days were over But now a feelrng of sadness rs creeprng over me We shall have to say good bye to all the fun we have had together How much we owe to our teachers and to Mr Freldl Thrs we can never repay And so as I look back over my twelve years of school I wonder what the future wrll hold for you Dear Drary MARY TURNER CLASS COLORS FLOWERS AND MOTTO We the Senror Class of 1942 were grven the prrvrlege of selectrng three thrngs by whrch we may be remembered They are our colors flowers and motto We chose for our colors red whrte and blue for our flowers red and whrte roses and for our motto Duty our Gurdrng Star Vlctory our Arm We chose our class colors red and whrte and blue frrst as an emblem of patrrotrsm and second for the vrrtues embodred rn these colors Blue stands for loyalty and truth whrte for purrty Red typrfyrng blood from the very begrn nrng has srgmfred courage What colors of more srffnrfrcance could we hope to attach to our banner as we march forth rnto the crowded thoroughfares of lrfe'J We have chosen as our flowers the whrte rose and the red rose because they stand for the warmth of the heart 'Ihe rose has always stood as a symbol of love We love our past and what rt has meant to us we love our present wrtrr lts honors rt holds for us and we love our future wrth rts glorrous promrses We hope therefore to develop character compafable rn perfectron to the roses we have chosen Page Srxteen 1 T' c . . We chose our motto because now more than ever we as Amerrcan crtrzens have a duty to perform As we look rnto our future we see a troubled world but wrth our hearts full of hope and rnsprred by these words Duty our Gurdrng Sta Vrctory our Arm we go forth bravely and cheerfully to meet whatever the future may hold MARTHA TURNER CLASS PROPHECY Hear ye' Hear ye' all ye people of Columbra to the words of wrsdom from thc lrps of your prophet who now speaketh unto you what hath been revealed unto her even as rt hath been decreed by the powers that be For rt has come to pass that the verl of the future hath been rent rn twarn even as rt was rent rn the days of the wlse prophets of old and the Sprrrt of th+ prophe y hath descended from the spheres to envelop my soul wrth her mystrc power I have been chosen as the one of thrs great and good people the Class of 1942 to dream strange dreams and to see strange vrsrons of the glorres of the vears yet to be I lament that the future of th1S great and glorrous class Sh0lllf1 depend upon me But behold' even as the cry of weakness drd ascend from the long sufferrng soul of your prophet a vorce from the heavens spake unto her even ln the words of old sayrng Hear now my words Then the curtarn of the drm Beyond was rolled back and I gazed at w1ll down the long vrsta of thrngs yet to be down the avenues of a strange land For as I looked rnto the land of the future I could drscern the famrlrar shapes of these farr and radrant ber rgs who were once my classmates now changed and transformed rnto crtrvens of the world It came to pass that the verl before mrne eyes grew yet more and more thrn through the rntensrty of my vrsron and behold I could see them even as rf the rntervenrng years were not at all Even as I marveled I heard sweet strarns of musrc and whom should I see but Chrck Shelton leadrng hrs own band wrth Sara Frances Beasley as hrs vocalr t and H B Johnson as hrs featured clarrnet player Then there flashed upon my vrsron the scene of a weddrng and Catherrne Allen made a lovely brrde comrng down the arsle to meet Jack Waldrop I also saw Kathleen Galloway happrly marrred and lrvmg rn Hawarr where her husband As I gazed agarn I saw Jane Hamblrn Batts as a famous playwrrght and Jr n Bevans as a famous star of stage screen and radro 'Ihen whom should I see but Mrller Pmkleton rn Tyrone Powers coveted place rn the hearts of the natrons ladres Qurckly the scene changed to Colurcbra where I saw Anne Cannon as post mrstress Srnce she had so much experrence wrth marl rn hrgh school she should be qurte effrcrent rn thrs posrtron I next saw Grdeon Farmer and Russell Gambrll now football coaches at Van derbrlt Unrversrty Russell was as he had hoped to be a bachelor On a large stage rn Hollywood I saw Marguarrte Bundrant one of the world s best tap dancers and Dalcomb Poag her equally famous partner From afar I heard the playrng of a crrcus band and wrth the crrcus I recognrzed Glenn Krnnard as the elephant trarner and Mary Margaret Erwrn as the bare back r1der As I lrstened rntently I heard the boonrrng xorce of a great orator and rt was none other than Brlly Akrn who was the Democratrc candrdate for Presrdent Adtran Fox was hrs opponent a the Republrcan candrdate Even as I lrstened I heard another xorce famrlrar set strange It was not Walter Wrnchell as I had frrst thought but our own Bob Wrllramson Next I saw a large court room where John Haywood was a famous lawyer For even though vanqurshed he could argue strll Before I had trme to thrnk upon thrs I heard loud laughter cornrng from a theater and there entertarnrng the audrence were those famous comedlans Henry Shelby and Peggy Donaho Page Seventeen , . - . 1 'i , , , . , - 0 . . c , , ' rr ,V n ' ' . . , ' . . , , ' y , . 1 , n A ' u ' Y 1 , , . , 7 ' .
