Prospectus I his record of the year 1949 which you are now reading is the product of a year’s industrious and ingenious efforts by the Pros- pectus staff. Editor-in-chief of Central’s forty-third year book was Pat Kostka, who directed its organization. Cal Samra, Associate- Editor, was responsible for the supervision of write-ups and pho- tography. A year book is only as good as its senior section. Elaine Jones, Senior Editor, planned an excellent section for the graduates of this year. Supervising the junior section of the book was Sue Smith, while Sue Laycock was in charge of sophomore layouts. Two new positions were created this year and were held by Joyce Peck, Faculty Editor; and Roger Pickering, Write-Up Editor. In charge of art work was Chuck Stanton; and Lucille Titus, Music Editor; Barbara Shepherd, Dramatics Editor; and Ron Black, Forensic Editor; were responsible for the fine arts section. Senior Officers JO IRWIN Secretary BILL BILLINGS President RON BLACK Vice-President RENA NOVAK Treasurer Class of 1949 Like most graduating classes the Senior Class of 1949 has complained about long, hard hours, but as graduation approached they were just as reluctant to leave as most of the classes before them. It was harder to say good-bye than they had thought it would be. On top after the elections in the fall were Bill Billings, president; Ron Black, vice-president; Jo Irwin, secretary; and Rena Novak, treas- urer. They were assisted by the class sponsors, Mrs. Edna McMillan and Miss Ruth Reik. Highlighting the activities of the year were the senior dinner dance, Baccalaureate, and finally Commencement. Among the other activities of the year were the senior couple dance, senior sing, and “Dear Ruth,” the senior play. SENIOR BOARD OF DIRECTORS. First row, left to right—Nancy Samson. Rena Novak, treas- urer: Bill Billings, president: Ron Black, vice-president; Jo Irwin, secretary. Second row—Joyce Wisely. Helen Samaras, Donna Rawlings. Jean Coonich. Mary Brabbs. Lesla Krantz. Third row —Julia Wilson, Charlotte Owen, Joyce Dye. Darice Murphy. Arlayne Warren. Fourth row— Reese Stipes, Paul Smith, D’Arcy Hoops, Tim Richardson, Marshall Hershon. We know that future athletes will also profit by their contacts with him. 54 Coaches Melzow and Auer cheer their boys Coach Howard Auer has proven again that the building of great men and teams is not mere luck with him. Beginning the season with a mere skeleton of last year’s championship team, he proceeded to ignore all the cynics that told him it couldn’t be done and went ahead and did the impossible. 55 The boys Auer trained and coached proved to him that they not only could play championship ball under ordinary conditions, but could also wade through the mud and slop of a stormy night to hold Arthur Hill to a 0-0 tie. 56 57 The climax of this season, however, came on November 25, at the annual Turkey Day classic. Central’s braves tussled with a highly rated Northern squad through an excitement packed hour, until they made their expert training pay off with a 13-13 tie. And so a season of upsets and ties ended fittingly enough with an upset and a tie. Fight, team! Fight! Fight! Fight! How often have you thrilled to hear this stirring cry echo across Atwood Stadium or shake the very foundations of the I.M.A.? This rhythmic throbbing of thousands of voices lifted in unison enters the body of every player who hears it and gives him the little bit of extra drive he needs to win. The hard working members of the cheerleading squad who help us to do our best deserve every bit as much credit for a victory as do the players. This year’s squad, sponsored by Roy D. Scheick and captained by Nick Manutes, has done an especially fine job and merits all of our praise. FOOTBALL MANAGERS. First row—Ernie Myers. Jerry CHEERLEADERS. First row—Bob McPherson. A number of excellent swimmers were produced through his efforts and their skill added to the team’s prestige. Among these stars were backstroker Jerry Treat who, because of his hard work, was elect- ed captain; Van Coleman, in individual relays; John Coolman, breast stroker; Bud Chapman, freestyle; and diver, Jerry Zerbe. The power of this year’s team is best shown by the fact that Chapman broke the varsity record twice during the season. The squad placed eighth in the state. Coach Richardson’s aquamen were in usual good form as they finished another successful season. The aquamen trained regularly in the Central pool, while the divers, under the super- vision of Stan Broome, worked out at the “Y” pool. Bud Chapman, star freestyler, was really hot, as he smashed the varsity record for the 50 yard sprint twice during the season. The record right now stands at 25 seconds flat, but not for long, as Bud is only a Junior. Jerry Zerbe also starred on the spring board. RESERVE SWIMMING. First row. left to right—Tom Richardson. Under the tutelage of Coach Bill Melzow the team developed into a well-balanced organization. Old-timers, such as Ralph Smith, Jerry Zerbe, Diz Evans, and Bob Warner, have the experience, while new boys, like Hall, Cove, and Craig, assured good future teams. Shot put- ter Chuck Craig broke the varsity record, which had been held by his brother Ron, with a mighty throw of 48 ft. 4 V2 in. Track Over hill, over dale — that fittingly describes the feats of our powerful cross country team. Topping the list of Coach Nap LaVoie’s pro- teges was star, Elihue Jarret. As the majority of the boys are juniors and sophomores, next year’s team should also be very strong. Sophomore George Carpenter looked exceptionally good, and will prove an asset to the team for several more years. What follower of the national sport does not thrill to the crack of a bat against a hard-thrown ball? Central boys are no exception, and this year’s varsity team, coached by George Mason, is fast proving itself a strong opponent. The battery of this hard- hitting organization features Bob Murdock and Bob Crane as pitchers, with Dick Leach as catcher. Enthusiasm for baseball has been so great that several reserve teams have been organized. These play regular schedules right along with the varsity. Coach George Mason is in the driver’s seat of the Indian’s 1949 base- ball squad. Under his able leadership the team has begun the season with a number of wins and at press time looked foreward to completion of a successful season. 68 RESERVE BASEBALL. This was the first time that the banquet had been held outside of the school. Jo Irwin acted as toastmistress and introduced Miss Florence Riddell who in turn welcomed the 150 faculty women, letter winners, and the parents. Miss Lee Schramm, guest speaker for the night, talked about “Winter Olympics in Switzerland.” She illustrated her talk by showing a movie she had taken of the Olympics. Miss Dorothy Breda presented to 19 girls the first year letters. The 12 second year letters, and 4 third year letters were given out by Miss Vivien Jeand’heur. There were only two girls who qualified for fourth letters. They were Clara Kuhen and Rena Novak. GIRLS SPORT MANAGERS. First row. left to right—Pat Fricke. Sherry Rood. Sally Goodell. There were three leagues, consisting of the Sophomores who met on Friday; Juniors, who met on Wed- nesday; and Seniors, who bowled on Thursday. Sixty-two teams participated. After five months three teams came out on top. They were the Sophomore Alley Rats, the Junior Fumbling Five, and the Senior Tipsey Toppers. These three teams played in a tournament with the second place teams of each league. This tournament was won by the Fumbling Five, who in turn were presented with a plaque. WINNING BOWLING TEAM. In the final game, the Bullies, a Junior-Senior team captained by Mary Jennings, played a group of Sophomores who had not formed a reg- ular team. The Bullies won with a score of 4-0. Miss Breda was Sophomore sponsor, and Miss Jeand’heur was sponsor of Juniors and Seniors. Badminton Badminton is one of the favorite sports of Central girls. Each girl receives 10 points to- wards her sports letter for each night that she participates in a game. Teams of two were formed and playoffs were held until one team stood victorious over the others. Every year a large number of girls turn out for this game of skill. FIELD HOCKEY. Tennis Softball Because tennis was not taught at Central, ten- nis clinics were held and fifty girls instructed by people from the Flint Tennis Club. These clinics were held on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at Whittier, Longfellow, and Lowell or Zimmerman, respectively. Then fol- lowed a tournament at Central in which these girls played. With the coming of spring many a girl’s heart turned to thoughts of softball. About two hun- dred girls participated in softball competition. Every Monday the Juniors and Seniors played under the direction of Miss Vivien Jeand’heur. Their manager was Marilyn Parsed. Sophomores were instructed by Dorothy Breda on Tuesdays, and their manager was Sally Jack- son. Six teams played each night. SOFTBALL. First row. left to right—Mary Brabbs. Diane Pfeiffer. The girls played on two nights, with the Juniors and Seniors reporting on Mondays under the supervision of Miss Vivien Jean- d’heur and the manager, Betty Wuelser. The Sophomores played on Tuesday nights and were supervised by Dorothy Breda and managed by Sally Jackson. The combination of Juniors and Seniors made up the winning team. Their captain was Margot Bald. Life Saving On the first day of life saving fifty girls turned out to begin their junior or senior life saving courses. These girls met every Wed- nesday after school for about four months and were instructed by Dorothy Breda. As- sisting were Jean Cusic and Rena Novak, who was the life saving manager. Out of the fifty girls who started, twenty passed their life saving tests—two were junior life savers, and the rest were senior life savers. LIFE SAVINC. First row. left to right—Judy Brown. This year’s Student Council, made up of elected representatives from nearly a hundred groups, met bi-monthly to discuss school busi- ness and to take proper legislative action. Under the sponsorship of Miss Florence Rid- dell, the Council was prominent in several areas of school life. One of its paramount accomplish- ments was a decision to standardize Central’s class ring. The conventional insignia’s debut will be with the class of 1950. Another significant result of original initiative was the formation of the Inter-Club Council. This organization’s purpose is to bring together in close harmony Central’s clubs, each being represented by its president. Looking ahead, the Student Council is plan- ning to eliminate difficulties in the collection of charities by instituting a Community Chest. This fund would be collected at the first of the year and divided among the various charitable or- zations. Among other things, Centralites enjoyed the monthly Student Union dances planned and ar- ranged by the Council’s Social Committee. Be- sides conducting a spring clean-up campaign, members of the Council saw to it that the ancient and dust-filled trophy cases were properly clean- ed out. Also in the spring came a delegation from Bay City Central High School to acquire a knowledge of the Council’s functions and methods. Further restrictions were put upon club sales, and a school-wide survey seeking to investigate the desires of the student body for club member- ship was taken by the Welfare Committee. In addition, Central’s adopted Belgian War Or- phan was given continued support. Committee chairmen for the past year were: Welfare, Dayne Davis; Social, Jo Irwin; Finance, Sally Jackson; Activities, Elinor House; Safety, Bob Bueckner; Red Cross, Dick Bradfield; and War Orphan, Helen Samaras. Robert Duff served as President of the Student Council, with Dick Bradfield as Vice-President. Holding the office of Secretary was Ruth Teitel- baum. Sally Jackson budgeted the school treas- ury. Bob Duff is sworn in as Student Union President 77 INTER-CLUB COUNCIL. Seated, left to right — Shirley Troxler. Nurses Club: Mary Sanderson, Forensic Society; Janet Woods. Y-Tccns; Fran Dunham. Belle Masque; Russ Linabury, Attic Players; and Bob Duff. Student Council President. Inter-Club Council The inter-club council was organized on Janu- ary 6 under the sponsorship of the Student Coun- cil to enable all clubs to work together for the general betterment of the school. The council is composed of the presidents of all school clubs, and although their aims are different, they wish to acquaint themselves with the aims and projects of other clubs. One of the first issues to be brought to the attention of the council was that of public sales sponsored by the different clubs. As the num- ber of sales became numerous, the council was called upon to work out and enforce a plan limit- ing these activities. Membership in the club is voluntary and no member is compelled to follow the decisions of the discussions. Junior Red Cross Executive Council The executive council of the Junior Red Cross is made up of the students who have attended the Junior Red Cross training camp in the sum- mer. This group acts as a steering committee for the whole council which consists of one repre- sentative from each group in school. One of the newer groups at Central, the Junior Red Cross Council was organized two years ago to carry out its duties as a service organization. Under the direction of Miss Hazel Hoyt, the council has taken over all Red Cross work. This was formerly carried on through the Dean’s office on a purely volunteer basis by individual students. This year saw the group sponsoring the Junior Red Cross drive and collecting material with which to fill a school chest containing school supplies, playground equipment, first aid equip- ment, towels, and other articles. This chest was sent overseas as a gift from Central to some school in Europe. A group of students has been organized and is on call for service at the Red Cross headquar- ters. A bicycle brigade is kept ready for emerg- ency work. The officers were: Dick Bradfield, president; Sarah Jane Carrell, vice-president; Nancy Hy- att, secretary; and Barbara Zerod, treasurer. Besides these officers the executive council is composed of Sue Laycoek, Bob Williams, Pearl Dobosh, Bill Eary, and Mary Jo Eugenis. 78 INTER-SCHOOL COMMISSION Helene Wright, Bob Duff, Miss Florence Riddell, Monte Marshall. Cal Samra. Inter-School Commission In order to unite the student bodies of Central, Northern, and Technical High Schools, the Inter- School Commission was formed. They have worked conscientiously to bring about under- standing and fellowship between these groups. One of their dreams was realized when the Tri-School Dance was held at the I.M.A. Audi- torium in the fall. An encouragingly large num- ber of students turned out to dance to the music of Bob Strong. As a result of their efforts there was a mini- mum of friction after the Thanksgiving Day game. Hundreds of friends and former pupils return- ed to school to help Miss Riddell celebrate the 26th anniversary of her years of service to Cen- tral and Flint. The guests were registered in a guest book which was later presented to her, while members of several of the girls’ clubs ushered and gave name cards to the guests. A program was held in the auditorium and Mr. Broome acted as master of ceremonies. A movie. In Retrospect, was shown and several beautiful gifts were given to Miss Riddell by the student body, friends, and alumni. Following the program, the guests were re- ceived in the gyms which had been beautifully decorated for the occasion. The glee club served refreshments. 79 SKIPPERS CLUB. Left to right—Cal Samra. Skippers Club Commanderins The Skippers Club, Central’s highest honor society for boys, was organized in 1931 by the late John Wellwood. The purpose of the club is to further the acquaintance of the boy leaders of the school and the principal. Meetings are called by any member, and usually the over-all school situation or a separate problem are ob- jects of discussion. Membership in the club is awarded class and Student Union officers, and the editors of the Prospectus and Arrow Head. The club has adopted the axiom, “Once a Skipper, always a Skipper.” Any boy who has attained member- ship remains a life-time member. The club is under the sponsorship of Mr. Philip Vercoe, and has no elected officers. The Commanderins, an honorary group of Central, was organized in 1930 by Miss Grace Pinel. Girls who are either past or present officers of the Student Union, their respective classes, the highest ranking girls on the Prospec- tus and Arrow Head staffs, and the presidents of the “F” Club and the Y-Teens are eligible for membership. These girls assisted in the registration and ushering of the guests at Miss Riddell’s party. The club has no officers and meetings to dis- cuss school problems may be called by any mem- ber. This organization, under the sponsorship of Miss Mabel Pinel, is similar to the Skippers Club. COMMANDERINS. First row. left to right—Pat Ormstcad. Sarah Jane Carrell. Rena Novak. Marion Goodwin. Varsity Club The main event of the year for the Varsity Club was the exciting Varsity-Faculty basket- ball game which ended in a 34-32 victory for the Faculty. The Varsity Club was organized in 1944 for the purpose of maintaining creditable academic achievement among athletes, promoting better school morale, and upholding the standard in value of varsity letters. Membership in the club is open to any male varsity letter winner, team manager, and cheerleaders. The officers are: Nick Manutes, president; Pete Drury, first vice-president; Chuck Young, second vice-president; Fritz Healy, secretary; and Ron Liddle, treasurer. Sponsor of the club is Joe Dowdy. F” Club “Does she go steady with our fullback?” a Sophomore exclaimed as he noticed a girl wan- dering down the hall wearing a letter sweater. “No, that’s her own letter!” was the reply of his more experienced companion. The two had run across one of the many active members of the “F” Club, the organization composed of girls who have earned one or more letters in sports. In the realm of accomplishments, the girls decorated the goal posts at Central’s football games and took part in pep assemblies of the year. The officers of the club are: Pat Ormstead, president; Mary Jennings, vice-president; Kath- leen Gelhorn, secretary; and Marilyn Parsed, treasurer. Belle Masque Now in its twenty-third year, the Belle Masque Honorary Dramatic Society, sponsored by Mrs. Helen Hardy Brown, has successfully fulfilled its purpose of promoting better dramatics in the school and community. This year’s production of “The Fighting Littles,” a three act comedy about a teen-ager and her family, was sponsored by the PTA Coun- cil. Another annual affair was their Christmas program for the children at the Whaley Home. The members also gave several one act plays for various organizations throughout the city, assisted in the productions of outside organiza- tions, and presented an act in the Kaleidoscope. The fall banquet was held at the Milner Hotel and new pledges were formally initiated. Still another highlight of the year was the Thespian initiation as members were initiated into the National Thespian Society. The president of the club during the past season was Bob Hummel, Ron Black was vice- president, Pat Kostka was recording secretary, and Barbara Shepherd was corresponding sec- retary. They were replaced for the Spring term by Laura Moore, president; Norma Sprague, vice-presi- dent; Diane Pfeiffer, secretary; Beverly Robin- son, treasurer. The club is under the direction of Miss Polly Mosteller. The Flint Central Forensic Club, whose pur- pose is to advance public speaking activities in our school, was organized in 1940. It is open to any interested person and speech letter winners automatically become members. The classes of membership are “Proficient”, “Participating” and “Ordinary,” depending on the activities of the members. The organization brought in several excellent speakers during the course of the year and also arranged for the proper display of speech awards. In addition, it presented a bulletin board for the benefit of the school. Attic Players The Attic Players, under the direction of Mrs. Maude Stewart Beagle, has completed its 18th year of producing plays of near professional quality for the school and community. During this period 23 long plays, including two Shakes- pearean dramas, have been staged. Membership in the club is obtained by having one’s name submitted by a member to the mem- bership committee; if the applicant can con- tribute any talent to the club he is eligible for membership. This year the Attic Players maintained their reputation with “The College Widow,” a four- act comedy. The club also helped the cancer drive by col- lecting money in theaters. At Christmas they sent clothing and toys to the German Boys’ Club at Bremen, Germany. In addition they had sev- eral social affairs, most important of which was the annual dinner dance at the Milner Hotel, May 7. “Oscars” were awarded to the best actors of the year. Officers for the 1948-49 season were: Russell Linabury, president; Pat Nilan, first vice-presi- dent; Frank Smythe, second vice-president; Marybeth Murray, secretary; and Reese Stipes, treasurer. Future Nurses Club Whether interested in the medical or mental field, Central girls planning to enter nursing are offered the privilege of joining the Future Nurses Club. The purpose of this organization is to help such girls choose the school or field of nursing they wish to enter. Membership in the club is determined merely by the girl maintaining a “C” or above average and an interest in nursing. The Future Nurses— enjoying only a year of existence — obtained speakers who discussed public health, psychia- try, and obstetrics. The club also secured an official state-wide club pin. Officers of the club were the following: Shir- ley Troxler, president; Alice Dodge, vice-presi- dent; Marilyn Johnson, secretary, and Nancy Bendall, treasurer. Miss Mildred Bunce served as faculty adviser and sponsor. Library Service Club “A book out of place is a book lost,” is one of the paramount axioms of the Library Service Club. Working behind the scenes and living up to such principles, its members succeeded in presenting a very orderly library to the student body this past year. The club is composed of students who volun- teer their services to the library for at least one period a day. Shelving books and magazines, checking them in and out, keeping them in order, and providing reinforcements, are the principal functions of these junior librarians. Not being regularly organized, the club has no officers. The sponsors are the librarians, Mrs. Alick and Miss John. 86 Cinema Club Shutterbugs Whether it be in biology, chemistry, physics, or history, the audio-visual aids provided by the Cinema Club are of great value to the school. This club, whose purpose is to present classroom movies when requested, is one of the largest school-movie clubs in Michigan. The club has been an asset to Central for four years. Any person interested in this type of school service may join. During the past year, Cinemites acquired much additional equipment, and worked toward obtaining a new movie pro- jector. Officers for’49 are: Ted Brice, president: Spencer Richards, vice-president; Wesley Swan- son, secretary-treasurer. Mr. Leonard Redd has served as faculty sponsor. The Shutterbugs were organized in 1944 for the purpose of uniting the student photog- raphers who were interested in passing on their knowledge to interested classmates. Many of the photographs taken and developed by mem- bers of this club appear in sections of this book, and in almost every issue of The Arrow Head. The club again sponsored a photography con- test this year and several members entered a national photography contest. They shared a darkroom with Junior College students and helped improve the facilities there. Mr. E. R. Jones sponsored the club. CINEMA SERVICE CLUB— First row, left to right—Ted Brice. Their purpose is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and commu- nity high standards of Christian character. They strive “to develop a clean, Christian youth, and to make the youths of today better citizens of tomorrow.” The service work of the Y-Teens has been with the Red Cross, and they have taken part in the activities at the Y.W.C.A. The Mohawk Hi- Y has helped with admission at school plays and programs, and contributed a cash fund to the world youth fund. The Booker T. Washington Hi-Y attended an older boys conference and N.A.A.C.P. vocational meetings and heard sev- eral speakers. They acted as councilors and ad- visors to boys with problems. They also bought windows for a new church. For the first time in several seasons, The Arrow Head, edited this year by Lucille Titus, entered competition and won both state and national honors. Last fall The Arrow Head was one of three Michigan high school papers in the class A division to receive an All-State award. This rating was conferred by the Michigan State College Journalism Department. This spring the paper gained an “excellent” rating from the National Press Association, being one of fourteen class A school publications in the country to receive this distinction. Mrs. Ruth Nurmi successfully completed her second year as adviser of the paper, and Mrs. Bessie Hemingway efficiently handled the fi- nances. Mrs. Nurmi also instructed the Journal- ism class which assisted by writing stories and headlines. The second annual Press Banquet was a high- light of the year. At this banquet students re- ceived letter awards for their work on the paper. The staff also visited local newspaper offices to see the “big-time” press at work. 90 Marilyn Dean, Jerry Oppenborn, Jerry Robinson. Debate For the thirteenth consecutive year, the De- bate squad of Flint Central reached the elimi- nation tournament and captured another plaque, awarded annually by the Detroit Free Press to schools excelling in debate. Central, however, was eliminated in this year’s tournament when they met a team which went on to the state finals and which had a member from last year’s state champions. The varsity debaters for this year were: aG firmative, Robert Duff and Mary Sanderson; negative. William Parker and Russell Linabury. This year’s proposition was: Resolved, that the United Nations now be revised into a Federal World Government. Spring Speech Flint Central was very active in Spring Speech activities this year. Under the direction of Mr. Harold Hawley, debate and speech coach, the class worked diligently during the second semes- ter on writing and memorization of oration, declamations, dramatic declamations, and ex- tempore speeches. The elimination contests were held during March and April. Nearly forty students partici- pated in the contests. At the final contest, twelve people were chosen to represent Central at the District Contest in Saginaw. Two of our contestants went to the Regional Contest. They were Jeanne Opiola and Robert Simmons, both of whom gave oratorical decla- mations. Others who went to Saginaw were: Kathy Gifford, Joyce Davis, Cal Rice, Mary San- derson. Delores Sumley, Nancy Bendall, David Kline, Bob Duff, Russell Linabury, and William Parker. 99 Bob Brown Bob Hummel Ron Black Wayne Rosson Margaret Burgess Radio In three years, radio at Flint Central has grown by leaps and bounds. The first year, the radio speech class did one program every other week. Now, the class does two entire programs every week in addition to having some part in three others. Of the seven programs put on by the radio department of the Flint public schools, Central participates in six of them. The Great Literature and Adventures for Chil- dren programs are presented every week by the radio class. Every week the class provides the newscaster and master of ceremonies for the Junior Varieties program and Penny and Archie for the School Workshop of the Air. Once a month the class provides the talent for the Young Americans programs. The Adventures for Children series is the first in-school listening program to be attempted, carrying out the idea of teaching by radio. The children were motivated by the story and drew pictures and wrote poems and letters. This medium was used for classes from the Kinder- garten through the sixth grade. Over one thous- and pictures were received which made it desir- able to hold a radio open house on May 26 and 27 for elementary students, their teachers and parents. Hundreds attended, and broadcasts of the Adventures for Children program were given to enable the children to witness the broadcasts to which they had listened. Scripts were written by the advanced radio class for many community projects, such as a series for the Urban League to be presented next fall. Job analysis scripts were written for the counseling committee. Programs were also writ- ten for the Red Cross and the PTA Clothing Drive. 100 First Picture — Bob Hummel is one of the boys who acts as engi- neer for the broadcasts directly from Central. Second Picture—Jo Irwin, Joyce Davis, and Stan Burt view the pic- tures that were drawn by school children illustrating the fairy tales. Third Picture—Wayne Lambert, Joan Sneden, and Jim Prentice study the script with student director Joan Prescott. Such fairy tales as Alice in Won- derland, Rumpelstilskin, Snow Queen, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, The Magic Glasses, Three Billy Goats Gruff, Sleeping Beauty, King Midas and His Golden Touch, and Rapunzel, were broad- cast over WBBC every Thursday. Nearly every elementary school in Flint listened to the broadcasts. Every Saturday evening a pro- gram of great literature was heard over WFDF. This series included The Canterville Ghost, The Shadow, Dr. Manette’s Manuscript, The Tell- Tale Heart, Jane Eyre, Becky Sharp, Vanity Fair, Pickwick Papers, and many others. 101 A CAPPELLA CHOIR. A Cappella Choir Preparing for the first school opera in four years occupied most of the A Cappella Choir's time and talent this year. The Gilbert and Sulli- van production, “Trial by Jury,” was shown five times. Three school assemblies were presented in addition to one public performance in Flint. The group also had the honor of appearing with the show at the Hartland Area Music Festival this spring. DUKES OF MELODY—Henry Wells. Don Ferneau. Dick Campbell, Jerry Robinson. Another of the choir’s major projects was the presentation of the cantata, “Song of Christ- mas.” This story in words and song of the nativ- ity was given for three student assemblies, pre- sented at the Rotary Club, and aired over station WFDF. The choir, under the able guidance of Mr. Walter Bloch, also found time to master the fes- tival music, and earned a “superior” rating when they played host to some 1,000 students at the District Vocal Festival in April. This awarded them an opportunity to compete in the State fes- tival at Michigan State College. The choir also lent its voices to entertain in the Kaleidoscope, Spring music assemblies. Spring Concert, and the baccalaureate service. Because of an overloaded schedule, the choir had to refuse many requests for out-of-school appearances. Officers presiding this season were: President. Frank Smythe; vice-president and robe custo- dian, George Simmons and Wayne Rosson; sec- retary, Georgena Fraizer; treasurer, Marilyn Dean; and librarian, Margaret Trengove. Ac- companists were Shirley Diamond and Jean Wallace. 102 FIRST CLEE CLUB. First row. left to right—Leana Crier, Betty Hahn. Jean Bowser. Sue Turner, Jo Meeboer, Lois Ann Newton, Pauline Morgan. Girls’ Glee Club The Girls’ Glee Club, under the direction of Miss Louise Doetsch, has successfully completed another active year. The Kiris sang at the Flint Quota Club Style Show and at the M.E.A. Con- vention in the early fall. After appearing in the Kaleidoscope in December, they began working on Christmas carols for assemblies and caroling programs. Broadcasts over radio stations WBBC, WTAC, and WFDF were other contributions of the group. Novelty numbers in costume were pre- sented by the Glee Club at the Band Show in March, and the student body was entertained at music assemblies this spring. The glee club received a “superior” rating at the district vocal festival, and this grade made the group eligible to participate in the State fes- tival at Michigan State College. Participation in the annual Spring Concert and a program at the Rotary Club luncheon dur- ing Music Week were other activities of the girls. In addition to performing for various organi- zations, the glee club maintains an active social life. A get-acquainted picnic is held in the fall and splash parties at the school pool and music mending parties are also given during the semes- ter. The year will end with an all-day outing. Officers for first and second semesters, re- spectively, are: President, Jean Bowser, Marga- ret Burgess; vice-president. Sue Turner, Marie Hill; secretary, Elizabeth Cooke, Nan Stull; treasurer, Arlayne Warren, Dorothy Mooney; attendance secretary, Nancy Samson; social chairman, Connie LaFredo, Jo Greenley; libra- rian, JoAnn Bradley. Central’s Band Central’s band is nearing the completion of its silver anniversary season which has been one of its most pro- gressive and active years. After being banned for several years, girls were once again admitted to the marching band this season. This addition accounts for the awarding of an unusually large number of band letters, thirty-one. Another new feature of the year was the organization of a “small band.” This is a selected group of sixteen play- Thc Marching Band ers who represent the band when a smaller group is desired. The marching band played and performed at all football and basketball games throughout the year. They also provided music for the Flint Arrows’ season opener. Besides participating in the Kaleidoscope, District Band Festival, and Annual Spring Con- cert, the group also presented a Band Show in which were included several novelty and indi- vidual numbers in addition to full band selec- tions. They also took part in the annual Band Conclave at Atwood Stadium in the spring. School assembly appearances included music department talent programs in February, and participation at all pep assemblies. A successful season will be ended when the band plays for Commencement June 8. Officers directing the band this year were: President,Bill Reusch; secretary-treasurer, Mar- tha Atkins; librarians, Aileen MacDonald. Lil- lian Morford, Carol Scott. Russ Linabury and Harlow Hopkins aided director Edwin J. Merrill as student directors. Drum majors included Har- low Hopkins, Roger Sullivan, and Jim Kause. 104 ORCHFSTRA First row left to right—Richmond Brown. Mar.on Coodw.n. Sarah Jane Carrell. Carol Stafford. Central’s Orchestra Central’s orchestra, which is an outgrowth of a piano and violin duet organized by alumnus Billy Mills in 1910, highlighted its activities this season by an appearance with Professor Joseph Evans of Michigan State College. Professor Evans was the guest artist at this year’s annual spring concert, and the orchestra accompanied him on the Mendelssohn G Minor Piano Con- certo. The group decided to bring Professor Evans to Flint instead of participating in the orchestra festival. His appearance was further financed by the MacDowell Music Club and the Sorosis Club of Flint. The orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Walter Bloch, this year spent much time in preparing accompani- ments for the a cappella choir activi- ties. They played a very important part in the presentation of the choir cantata, “Song of Christmas,” and the opera, “Trial by Jury.” The full orchestra also played for a PTA City Pageant, performed at Hon- ors Assembly and a spring music as- sembly, and entertained at the Kaleid- oscope. The string quartet, made up of Carol Stafford, Donna Kilburn, Addie Lou Adams, and Arthur White, has completed a very successful year. The group received a “superior” rating in both district and state competition, and made many appearances at functions throughout the city. Those guiding this year’s activities were: President, Marion Goodwin; secretary-treasur- er, Charles Udvarnoky; librarians, Donna Kil- burn and Donna Beagle. Attendance clerk was Daniel Hatten, and Penny York was accompa- nist. Carol Stafford Donna Kilburn Addie Adams 105 Second Glee Club SECOND CLEE CLUB. First row. left to right—Charlotte Burrage. In the September elections the Juniors chose four very able leaders for their class officers. Ron Liddle was elected president; Sarah Jane Carrell, vice-president; Marion Goodwin, secre- tary ; and Elizabeth Boyd, treasurer. With the help of these newly elected officers and the Junior Board of Directors, consisting of elected representatives from each Junior group, plans were made for the Junior Play. This year, “Remember the Day” by Higley and Dunning, was presented November 12 and 13 under the direction of Mrs. Helen Hardy Brown. The Juniors also sponsored the spring clean- up campaign. Class of 1951 Like all Sophomore classes this one has been very busy with high school life. Central is far different from the junior high schools, with its crowded halls, spacious and beautiful campus, new teachers, new friends, and numerous activities. All these factors have changed the life of many a sophomore. Opportunities are offered in fields of arts, dramatics, music and liter- ature. Many activities were sponsored, namely, the clean-up campaign, headed by Loraine Stuerzl and Sue Tallman. The inter-class track meet was also made possible. Finally, the sophomore dance was sponsored with Brahm Ward’s band supplying the music in the gym. Much of the success of these activities was due to the leadership of George Carpenter, president; Frank DTtri, vice-president; Delores Rich, secretary; and Diane Olson, treasurer. The story of the Class of ’51 is certain to be a successful one. The members hope to measure up to the expectations of their teachers, parents, and friends. Good luck as Juniors! 116 S O P H O M O R E S ROW 1 — Frank Adams, Mildred Aeby, Clayton Albert.
