We Dedicate This Book To . . . Grace D. Pixel ... an inspiration . .. a friend ... a guide for twenty-three years. But when the sun in all his state Illumined the eastern skies, She passed through glory's morning gate And walked in Paradise. : 1 I t t t t ► ‘ ■- ■ ■ ■ ' 1 James Aldrich STUDENT UNION OFFICERS. Sarah Jane Carrell. corresponding secretary: Cal Samra. vice-president; Joseph Pelham, president; Beverly Telford, recording secretary. This year brought revisions to the Student Union Constitution as the Student Union members, over two thousand strong, decided to extend voting privileges to “all students officially enrolled in Central High School.” Also, the executive body will include a president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer as officers, by way of another amendment. Other ambiguous clauses in the Constitution were cleared as a result of three months’ work by a committee headed by George Sharpe. As in the past, the Student Union has offered its members admission to most of Central’s games, assemblies, and parties along with a subscription to the Arrow Head. It has served to unify and to make extra-class activities representative of the whole school. I he President of the Student Union was Joseph Pelham and the position of Vice-President was held by Cal Samra. Beverly Telford served as Recording Secretary, and Sarah Jane Carrell as Corresponding Secretary. The cameras all are ready Slioal” the director cries, Taking scenes of 48” To unreel before your eyes. Student Council This year, as in the past, Central’s Student Council has striven for better relations between students, faculty, and the community. Representatives from each group have come together in order to perfect conditions of the school and to perform works which will be beneficial to Cen- tral’s citizens. Not only were the school and community served, but also far-away parts of the world where chil- dren of different lands received Red Cross boxes packed by members of the Student Council Red Cross Committee under the direction of Roberta Jimerson. The War Orphan Committee again supervised the sending of boxes to the Belgian war orphan adopted by the Central students. Due to the Student Union Constitution amendments, the head of the Finance Commission will be replaced by a treasurer next year. Under Ruth Teitlebaum’s direction, the commission made ap- propriations for classes organizations, and activities and submitted the budget for 1948. In addition to sponsoring the Clean-Up Campaign, obtaining trash cans for the campus, and supervising the purchase of shrubs, the Welfare Commission, directed by Dayne Davis also se- cured suggestion boxes in the main office. Arrangements for the bands and decorations at the various social events were handled by the Social Commission supervised by Rosemary Davis. The Activities Commission, headed by Bill Billings, supervised the submission of the Stage Craft Club charter. They were also responsible for the opening of the lunch rooms. Through this hall pass approximately three thousand students daily. t Shamil Walters Mary Watt Class of 1948 I his year has been a wonderful one for the class of '48 because it is their senior year. Much has been accomplished through the cooperation of the senior officers: Dorothy Zavell, president; Sharon Walters, secretary; Mary Watt, treasurer, and the class sponsors, Miss Dietrich and Miss Doetsch. As Seniors the class presented their annual play. This year it was “Arsenic and Old Lace” by Joseph Kesserling, a comedy in three parts. The play was under the direction of Mrs. Helen Brown. I he Senior Board of Directors, working with the class officers and sponsors, planned the Senior Dinner Dance, Commencement, Honors Assembly, Senior Sing, and Baccalaureate, all important events in the senior year. Sports also held their place in '48, when city, valley, and state honors went to the football squad, and city and valley honors to the basketball team. I he Senior Class has accepted its responsibility to uphold the traditions and ideals of Central High. Now, after three successful years, they are ready to accept a new responsibility, and as citizens of tomorrow, are prepared to meet the future. SENIOR BOARD OF DIRECTORS. Central’s highest honor society for boys, was organized for the purpose of promoting better relations between the faculty and the student body through l oys holding resjionsible positions. The Skippers meet with Mr. Vercoe to discuss various problems whenever a member feels the need for a discussion. This group consists of the boy class and Student t nion officers as well as the high ranking boys on the Arrow Head and Prospectus staff'. The Club was organized by the late John Well- wood. and through the years has accomplished many of its aims. Commanderins 'I'bc Commanderins, an honorary group consisting of girls who are or have been Student Union offi- cers. class officers, highest ranking girl of the Arrow Head and Prospectus staffs, and presidents of the “V Teens’’, “F” Club, and G.A.A., was organized in 1930 by Miss Grace Pinel. The purpose of this club is to discuss problems of the school, especially those having to do with girls. The club has no officers, and any member may call a meeting whenever she desires. This year the club participated in the Kaleidoscope and planned a pic- nic with the Skippers Club. C() M MAX D ER IX S. first rote, left to ri( ht—Joyce Newberry, Sara Jane Carrell. The officers of the “F” Club this year were: Shir- ley Treffry, president; Peggy Brohn, vice-president; Rena Novak, secretary; Janette Marczi, treasurer; and Evelyn Lorence, miscellaneous chairman. The club participated in many events this year among which were selling “Cokes” at the Student Union Dances, providing baskets to needy families, and decorating the goal jx)sts at the football games. The social highlight of the year was a pot luck supper held in March. Varsity Club Membership in the Varsity Club is open to any hoy who has earned a letter in the field of athletics and who maintains passing marks. The club, spon- sored by Herk Renda, elected the following officers: Jim Bishop, president; Ken Averill, vice-president; Keith Averill. secretary; and Jack Marr. treasurer. The club has not been too active this year due to athletic schedules interfering with their meetings, but the club has ushered at several assemblies and performed various unheralded tasks about school during the year. Alpha Rho Tau The Alpha Rho Tau is a club for those interested in art and in putting their abilities into practice. Members hear reports on different artists and help other school organizations by supplying them with posters and scenery for their various activities. Their big event of the year was an art exhibition at which students’ work was displayed. Miss Polly Mosteller, club sponsor, students, and others did the judging. The officers for the year of 1948 were: Pat Howell, president; Bill Xakariasen. vice-president; Darlene Knglart, secretary; Donna Randolph, treasurer. Chem Club I he Chem Club was reorganized this year under the sponsorship of Mr. Henry because of interest that had grown since it was disbanded a few years ago. At the be- ginning of the year the club elected Bob Martin president and Ken Groves secretary. The club meets every three weeks to discuss business and their project of learning more about chemistry. The object of the club is to give those students who are really interested in chemistry a chance to work with the equipment in the school’s labora- tory and do experimenting which they would not have time for during a regular class period. Many of the girls in the club made lipstick and face cream in their spare time experiments. After a student successfully finishes an experiment he makes a report of it to the club at the next meeting. C HEM CLUB, hirst roiv- Albirdie May. The club’s annual production this year was the three act comedy. “Date With Judy,” sponsored by the P.T.A. Council. This was directed by Mrs. Brown. Members of the Belle Masque entertained the children of the Whaley Home with a Christmas party by presenting an original radio script, had an act in the Kaleidoscope, sponsored National Drama Week, assisted the Community Players in many re- spects. and entertained Sorosis Club. Social events of the year included the Fall Banquet, Thespian Initiation, various picnics, and the Spring Formal. Officers of the club for the 1947-48 season were: Peg Hartley, president; Barbara Gwyn. vice-presi- dent ; Nan Curry, recording secretary; Ben Pierce, corrcsiKHiding secretary; Bob Hummel, treasurer. Socially, the club gives one party for the library staff around Christmas time. “Y” Teens The club whose aim is '‘to promote brotherhood and good fellowship is the ” Teens, junior mem- bers of the Y.W.C.A. Attic Players The Attic Players, which is sponsored by Mrs. Maude Stewart Beagle, is one of the largest and old- est clubs at Central. Since its organization seven- teen years ago. it has made a reputation for having produced many fine plays in a most professional manner. The group got its name from its work shop in the attic of the school. There are seventy-five members with an equal number of boys and girls. One long play and several one act plays are given every year. This year the Players delighted two capacity audi- ences with Mark Twain’s “The Prince and the Pauper” and then again in April they upheld their reputation with a splendid production of “The Bar- retts of Wimpole Street.” In addition to their Thes- pian accomplishments, they had several social affairs including the annual dinner dance, at which “Oscars’ were presented to the l cst actors of the year. At Christmas, they performed one outstanding service by sending clothing and toys to Sgt. Lloyd Johnson, an alumnus in Germany, to distribute among the various boys’ clubs with which he works. The officers for the year were Frank Price, presi- dent; Beverly Swalla, first vice-president; Bob Duc- ker. second vice-president; Barbara Robbins, secre- tary; and Gene Tuttle, treasurer. Grease Paint Club This is the tenth year for the Grease Paint Club of Central High School. Organized by Mr. Thomas Davy as a service club for the school, its purpose is to teach its members the fundamentals of stage make-up and how to carry them out. In the Grease Paint Club, membership is limited each year to four Sophomores because it takes them years to perfect the art of stage make-up. The objective of these Sophomores is to learn the art of applying straight make- up and grease paint. The Junior and Senior club mem- bers having acquired these fundamentals, are taught to apply character make-up. During the year the Grease Paint Club did make-up for several school productions. It also assisted many civic groups in Flint in this art. Shutterbugs The Shutterbugs of Central arc organized to promote and teach photography to students interested in this sort of work. They originated in 1944 and since then have encouraged many students to participate in the club. The club is under the sponsorship of Mr. Scheick. Officers arc: Floyd Maddock, president; Marshall Her- shon, secretary-treasurer; Dick Clapp, properties. The club sponsored a photography contest this year and plans wider activities next year because of the new dark room given to them by the Mott Foundation. With Trov Middleton serving as president and Julie Woodcock as secretary - treasurer, the club, sponsored by Stan Broome, made plans to order special Booster pins to wear at games. Because they would not have been received until after the basket- ball season, the plans were abandoned until next football season. Supplementary to the meetings, talks about rules and game procedure were presented bv Jerry Udell, a former Central coach; John Steve, assistant sports editor of the Journal; Wendell Lyons of the YMCA, and coaches Auer. Evans. Renda. Melzow. and La Voie. As a result, the group was better informed and learned of many of the inside facts of basketball and football that the average spectator does not know. The Boosters are looking forward to even more accomplishments in the future in order to fill the student body with the “OF Peppa” needed to make good sports and good citizens. Despite an ice and snow strewn gridiron this gilded fowl managed to move down the field three times to lay three golden eggs in the form of T. D s. This trio hatched into city, valley and state titles. The first was delivered via the airways in the second quarter as Mvers tossed and Ingram made the reception with Farkas con- verting. In the third quarter Averill blasted his way to a first down on the Norse 1 ft. line and three plays later All-State Bart plunged into the end zone. Then Farkas converted, f t 1 J - - « - - - - - - making it two in a row, with the score 14 to 0. Later in the quarter Northern scored its lone tally by two long passes. In the final stanza Bill Billings, on successive running plays, made the last marker but the conversion was wide as the final score loomed 20 to 6. This ultimate victory was supple- mented by team and individual honors and ended a season undefeated and untied. The Indians had the distinction of not hav- ing a single opponent come within 14 points of their leading margins throughout the season. It began with a 31 to 6 trouncing of Ann Arbor followed by a 19 to 0 victory over Muskegon, 14 to 0 over the highly touted Lansing Sexton, 34 to 7 over high-geared Ken Averill Louis Szal Pontiac, 26 to 7 over Saginaw, 21 to 0 over an inspired Owosso eleven, 27 to 0 over state- leading Arthur Hill, 26 to 0 over Bay City, and the supreme victory over the North End eleven. This completed a run of 218 points to their opponents 26 — a fine record. At the Annual Football Banquet the co- captains of our All-State victors were an- nounced: namely, center Ken Averill and quarterback Louie Szabo, making the perfect football season complete. % % RESERVE FOOTBALL. Swimming Coach Boh Richardson and his able assistants, Stan Broome and John Kirbv, piloted the 1947-48 varsity swimming team to six wins against eight losses. Among eighteen squads Central took a tie for eighth place along with Pontiac in the state meet. 1 he natators enjoyed triumphs over: Bay City, 46-28; Mt. Clemens, 70-14. with a complete shutout; Jackson, 50-27; Bay City Central, 51-23; and Mt. Clemens, 54 30, where our reserve substitutes dominated the meet. The losses came at the hands of: Pontiac, 43-37: Royal Oak, 55-29, although all events were very close, and Ann Arbor, 45-39. Arthur Mill pushed Central to their worst defeat at 61-23, and previously took a hotly contested 44-40 win; Lansing Eastern took two by the scores of a close 43-41 and 47-37, and another loss went to Pontiac 43-37. Despite the losses the aquamen broke five varsity marks including the 50 yard freestyle in 25.6 by honorary captain Jerry Prosser, a 200 yard freestyle record set by Buss Gilbert at 2:20.1, the 100 yard freestyle mark by Bud Priehs at 58.3, the 120 yard individual medley by Doug Trevarthen in a time of 1:30.3, and the season’s unbeaten 200 yard freestyle Belay team of Chapman, Jim Anderson, Gilbert, and Prosser to the tune of ’:44.6. This year’s team, although not outstanding, leaves with the best prospects for next year’s squad. Led by Oscar Ingram, Bud Brotebeck, and Bill Hackett with 240, 199, 13-1 points respectively, the rampaging Redskins flashed to the most successful season any Indian hard court team has ever known. The powerful Red-Black net- ters compiled an average score of 45.2 points to their opponents 35.6 while riding to a 11-4 season’s record. Two of these four losses were to State champion Jackson, one was to a power- ful first semester North End squad, and the other a flukish loss to Pontiac. Both Northern and Pontiac paid for their vic- tories with lop-sided losses to the Redskins in further season’s action. Pontiac yielded 57-37 in their return match and the Vikings were smashed three times in a row by the Tribe— 43-37, 36-27, and 42-33 — to make Central’s revenge almost complete. Almost but not quite, for in the semi-final round for the State Cham- pionship Central’s fighting quintet came within 3 seconds of downing Jackson’s Vikings before Vern Allen, one of the finest basketball players in Michigan history, swished the Central nets on a pass from Charles Teste, who had switch- ed the ball from an Indian player, and put the game on ice. Jackson’s win over Port Huron the following night was rather an anti-climax. With his season complete coach Arthur “Dick Evans announced the election by the Central five of Charles “Bud” Brotebeck, the cool, com- petent point maker, to honorary team captain- cy, for the 1948-49 season and thus wrote “line to another glorious chapter in the sports annals of Flint Central I ligh School. Girls’ Athletic Award Banquet The big event on the girls1 sports calendar this year was the Athletic Award Banquet held on January 22, in Central’s cafeteria. This year a large number of mothers were in attendance to see their daughters receive their letters for par- ticipation in the many sports available here at Central. After a lovely meal, Miss Barbara Revvey, toastmaster, introduced Miss Riddell, who gave the welcome. Following a vocal solo hv Miss Colleen Carson, the guest speaker of the eve- ning, Mrs. Mildrd E. Bennett, Director of Children’s Services in Genesee County, was introduced. After Mrs. Bennett's talk on her work with girls in Genesee County, and a piano solo by M iss Ruth (Jutland, came the awarding of letters, hirst awards to fourteen girls were presented by Miss Vivien Jeand’heur; second awards to five girls were presented by Miss Marion Duncan; and third awards to seven % girls were presented by Miss Dorothy Breda. I he program was closed with the singing of the Alma Mater. Because of the great interest shown by the girls of Central in learning about swimming and life saving, Miss Dorothy Breda again took over their course in order that they might have this instruction available. Both Junior and Senior Life Saving were covered in the period between October, 1947 and February, 1948. Miss Do- lores Wagar was Miss Breda’s assistant, and was very helpful in the large class. The qualifications for taking Life Saving train- ing are a good knowledge of swimming strokes, endurance, and form. Special emphasis was placed on the crawl, side, back, anti breast strokes which arc used most frequently in the life saving procedure. Senior, and Faculty teams, and also the Junior College Girls’ basketball team. Each girl who went out for the sport and stayed with it to the end received ten points toward her let- ter for each night of playing. Volleyball Volleyball has been quite a popular sjxut this year. About 146 girls have gone out on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights for this game which provides good fun and exercise although great skill and endurance arc not need. Under the able leadership of Donna Timmons. Elinor House, and Pat Sine, the girls on the eighteen teams learned a great deal alxnit the game and have also earned a considerable number of points toward their letters. VOLLEY BALL. Spring Sports With the coming of Spring and nice weather the Central Girls’ Athletic Department began lining up girls for the spring sports. This year Miss Breda, Miss Jeand’heur and Miss Oslxirne have undertaken six activities. Girls interested in horseback riding went with their manager to some of the various riding stables around the city. Tennis, which has been in the background for the i ast few years as far as girls’ sports were concerned, came into its own this year. A large group of girls participated in the tournament and the finals at the Tennis Club. Archery, the game of skills, has kept quite a number of girls busy this year. Golf for the girls has been revived. A tournament was played off at the various courses around the city. Many girls turned out for the bike and walking bikes. One group of girls on bicycles rode as far as Saginaw. Softball is still the main spring sport for girls. So many girls were interested that three nights a week were put aside for it. The number of points received for each of these sports is determined bv the amount of time each girl puts into the s|x rt. Skating This winter quite a few warm-blooded Central girls joined Jayne Heath, the ice skating manager, at the public rinks of Flint to gain five points an hour towards their sports letters. This is the first year that much interest has l een taken in ice skating. We hope that interest will grow, even if there is such a short time to participate. Other girls interested in skating the year round have joined Margaret Wise on many roller skating parties. t ■ ■ “On Borrowed Time” By Paul Osborn Directed by Helen Hardy Brown P d....................George Drury Julian Nor! hr up......Robert Hummel Nellie Norlhrup Margaret Trengove Aunt Demelria Riffle . . Debate Despite the fact that only four letter winners from last year's state championship squad re- turned this season, the Central debate squad made its usual fine showing in Saginaw Valley competition. On December 5th two members of the squad, Peg 1 lartlcy and Joe Pelham, participated in an exhibition debate against West High School of Rockford, Illinois, at the Indiana State De- baters’ conference at Purdue University. In the first Saginaw Valley Tournament held here on November 15th, the Central debaters Harold K. Hawley Coach won 7 out of 12 debates, placing second to Pon- tiac.’ At the second tournament held at Bay City on December 4th the Central squad gained first place, winning 9 out of 12 of its contests. In the final meet at Arthur Hill, Central tied Bay City for the Valley title by winning an additional 8 out of 12 possible debates. After extensive try-outs the Varsity was chosen and included Peg Hartley, Mary Sanderson, and Ruth Teitelbaum. On February 7th the Varsity was defeated by Traverse City 11 igh in the District Klimination Tournament. I his year’s squad was under the capable direc- tion of Harold E. Hawley, whose untiring effort and leadership serves as a continual in- spiration to the debaters. The 1948 proposition was: “Resolved: That the Federal Government should require arbi- tration of labor disputes in all basic American industries.’’ a 3 « - a a a a a - - a a a a a Jack Heyward, Peg Hartley, Bud Hummel reading script Radio This year the radio program at Central has been extended to include two radio classes. Radio I trains students in script writing, acting, and directing, while the advanced class of Radio II presents broadcasts over the various stations. Roth classes are under the direction of Mrs. Helen Hardy Brown. The advanced class has presented three scries of programs over station WFDF, all of them being transcribed in studio FCHS. located in Central’s tower. The first series was dramatization of great literature, the second, dramatization of short stories, and the third, dramatizations of great plays. As an outside activity the class participates in the “Teen Age Commission” in connection with station WBBC. Central alternates every four weeks with the other high schools of Flint. Many of the advanced radio students have obtained outside positions through their radio training here at Central. Lois Young writes scripts for the Board of Education. Appearing in her “musical apprecia- tion” programs are Jeanne Parsons and Elton Earl, both radio students. Another member of the class. Glen Phillips, has two disc jockey shows over a local station. In January a new RCA console was purchased by Central so that broadcasts may he made directly from the tower. Class chairmen for the year 1947-48 were: Peg Hartley, program chairman; Jeanne Parsons, music; Shirley Compson. scripts; Charlotte Bennett, bul- letins: and Boh Hummel, technician. Class announc- ers for the season were (den Phillips and Boh Hum- mel. Student directors, to whom the responsibility of casting and developing programs was given, were: Lois Young. Treasurer; Pat Rathburn, Vice-President: Pat Elmer, President. Not pictured—Georgene Faiver, Secretary. The Class of ’50 In September of 1947 another new group of sopho- mores were seen in Central’s halls. These sopho- mores, needless to say, have quickly adapted them- selves to the busy life at Central, and took their places in classrooms and activities. As a result of the fall elections four competent officials were chosen to lead the class. Those elected were: Pat Elmer, president; Pat Rathburn, vice- president ; Georgine Favier, secretary; Rosemary Williamson, treasurer. A Sophomore Board of Directors was then chosen and throughout the year worked with the officers to discuss and plan the class activities. One of the bigger projects was a Student Union Party. The active part the sophomores have taken, both in scholastics and activities, indicates that the class of '50 will carry on as successfully at Central as the classes which have preceded them. Dinner dance ... cap and gown ... com- mencement . . . the tinsel of graduation; in short, tradition. Through three years of exams, friend- ships, fun—we have lived other tradi- tions . . . those of the freedom, under- standing, companionship, teamwork of Central. The time is running short . . . the last reel has ended and the house lights come on. Let our hearts says . . . “Three years . . . well lived, well remembered, well done.” Ai cyia lvi % WIRE-O-BINDING PATENTS PENDING DETROIT MICHIGAN BOOK BINDING CO.
