Page 44 CLASS HISTORY S1nce we were freshmen four years ago our one thought has been graduatlon My Ill be glad to get out of th1s place' Ooooh' These teachers' Oh just to walk down that alsle When Sen1or Week came we began to reahze our dream com1ng true but some how mldst all the excltement and happmess there was a tlnge of sorrow we wouldnt adm1t lt but It was there Strange how one never real1zes the fun hes hav1ng t1l 1ts ab ut to end' Why we even began to v1s ua 1ze the teachers as human be1ngs lnstead of monsters seated at a desk Wlth a wh1p 1n one hand and a book 1n the other' We have had a lot of fun haven t we? Re member that hot summer day 1n August 52 when we first started to Central? Everyone thought the halls were at least two m1les long and wondered how 1n the world we would get down them 1n three mlnutes That year we elected JACKIE ROGERS BUD YOUNG and BETTY LOU FRANCIS as class officers The glrls basketball team was helped a great deal when CLARA WILSON and BIRDIE ANN DONNELL came to Central They have been the backbone of our team for the last two years MARTIN BOBBY JERNIGAN and HENRY BUTLER were up and comlng football play ers Those were the first and hard earned letters for the boys The Key Club was at ltS best that year w1th the pantomlme Re member BUD YOUNG and some others as The Hllltoppers The strmg band was be glnnmg to galn 1n popularlty thanks to BILLY SPENCE RAY MELTON BILLY HENSON and FLOYD LEONARD Then we were Jumors Two years down and two years to go Just th1nk we were now upper classmen' Lovely MISS SUSAN SANDERS was chosen football queen that year and lt was an excellent ChO1Ce NANCY BAGWELL JO ANN THOMPSON HELEN JETTON HELEN JONES BETH WHITE and PHYLLIS MURRAY were always at the games to cheer our teams on to vlctory Th1s year was topped by our basketball team w1n n1ng the d1str1ct tournament The cheer leaders and many enthuslastlc students left for Memphls GRIGG DAVENPORT made All State team Our football team won the North Central Conference BOBBY JERNI GAN made All Conference team Officers for the year were HENRY BUTLER Presl dent LILLIAN MAYO Secretary BUD YOUNG VICE Presldent and BRYAN BELL Treasurer We had a wonderful sponsor that year M1ss Sara Reeves who helped us 1n our Englxsh as well as 1n the Gu1dance Room Now our h1gh school days are cl1maxed w1th the blggest year of all It was hard to belleve we were actually on the last rung of the ladder' So many thmgs have hap pened thxs year HENRY BUTLER was elected Presldent of the Student Body BUD YOUNG PET POWELL PEGGY SUMMAR and BRYAN BELL were elected class ofli cers EDWARD PORTERFIELD was a great football manager The band was at 1ts best Wlth IIS new dlrector M1ss Hamllton EMILY ELROD was elected DAR medal 1st JEAN BELCHER was a Star Thesplan RUTH WALKUP was elected FHA Queen and JERRY JACKSON was the Kmg at the annual Barnwarmmg DICKY PALMER and GERTRUDE ABEL d1d a bang up Job on the H1 Llghts JO ANN THOMPSON was football queen and BETH WHITE was senlor attendant ELAINE MILES headed the Postscrlpt crew th1s year The Sen1or Class has about S1400 to a1d the school MISS ELAINE ROOKER became MRS JERRY L MILES COLLEEN WILSON became MRS BERT NORTON MISS JEAN ROBINSON became MRS NICHOLS became MRS JERRY JAKES and MISS BETTY JEAN BELL became MRS WILLIAM HALLIBURTON BILLY SPENCE BILLY STACEY and GRIGG DAVENPORT also entered the holy state of matr1mony And oh yes dont forget Mr Warner our beloved sclence teacher was also marr1ed The Key Club d1d a much needed tree plantlng Job on our campus JUDY PARKS elected M1ss Keyette And of course we cant leave wlthout men t1on1ng our senlor sponsors th1s year MISS Sara Murray and Mr Burns Ph1ll1ps who d1d a wonderful Job Sen1or Week certa1nly was a hlgh po1nt 1n our four years at Central LILLIAN MAYO BETTY JOHNSON and MARVIN MARTIN should be g1ven speclal thanks for thelr efforts 1n plannmg Sen1or Week No one reallzed that the Semors had such excellent taste about clothes t1l Sen1or Week came around and then the halls looked l1ke the Easter Parade Yes soon we ll be graduates of Central Hlgh School As we look back everyone of us must adm1t that the fun weve had dur mg the past four years the happlness we ve found and the fr1ends weve made greatly outwelgh the hardshlps and sadness when We were S'0phom01.es, MARVIN DEAN WESTBROOKS, Miss SHIRLEY
