S AM FRIEDHOF The Senate enjoyed its usual success and worthy accomplishments this year. The high standards and lofty ideals, set up by the Senate members of former years, were nobly carried out by the Society this year. Pervaded with a spirit of co-operation, the entire membership proved itself capable of attaining the excel- lent qualities that are sought for by every admirable student. Realizing their responsibility, the ofhcers directed the activities of the Senate in a manner worthy of praise, while the Society functioned smoothly with the timely advice and valuable influence of Miss McPherson, their most loyal and lovable sponsor. The Senate started olf with a bang in September. Under the splendid lead- ership of President J. A. Lovell the Senators worked eagerly to increase the mem- bership of their club, and to better their society. With these purposes in mind each member of the Senate put forth his efforts to make the Senate the best club in the school, As a result of these vigorous efforts, the Senate soon became a mass of activity, which was marked by its beneficial attitude towards the school. Char- acteristics of the first term's work was "the big murder trial" and the campaign for school spirit. With the enrollment of the students from Junior and the other schools at the beginning of the second term, the Senate membership swelled to the maximum: and, as a result of this new stimulus, a renewed interest was created. Selecting the boys' debating team to represent the school in the city and Interscholastic League debates held the chief interest. As is always the case, the boys chosen were Senate members. Senators Hanscomb and Daniel represented the school in the debate on the City Manager Plan of Government, while Lovell and Daniel held up the school colors in the Interscholastic League, What the Senate, as a whole, accomplished is interesting and important, but not more important than what each member accomplished individually in the club. As a result of having joined this society, every member has received a fair knowl- edge of parliamentary procedure. Every member has learned to express himself better and "to think on his feet." Every member has learned some of the finer points of debating and public speaking. This knowledge will prove itself inval- uable throughout lifeg and, because the Senate affords such learning, it is one of the best clubs in the school. f L '15 Q,-ff" V .1 --ef I if Page Eighty Eight 4
