game and went to the semi-nnals at the district meet where they lost by two points in the last minute of
As usual, Coach Curtis proved himself a wonderful coach. Johnson. as captain, was the outstanding
star of the team. His floor work was especially line. We wish him just as great a success in college.
CLASS A CHAMPIONSHIP
The Panthers won the Class A Championship of the city without losing a game. Poly and North
Side, their two opponents, were clearly weaker from every angle of the game. Barlow was the high point
of the league with Johnson and Broiles following closc behind. Koontz was rated as one of the best guards
in the city.
ln the lirst game of the season the Panthers defeated Poly 34 to 12. Poly's little gym bothered Central
at iirst, but they soon became used to the floor and looped the basket with regularity. ln the second game
of the season Central took on the Steers and defeated them so decisively that North Side did not recover
from the effects of this game until the end of the basketball season. The score was 52 to 8. In only
two games of the league was Central ever forced to play hard.

The 1926-27 Season
At the opening of practice, Coach Curtis found that his basket ball prospects were the brightest in sev-
eral years. In Johnson, Barlow, Broiles, and Gander he had four players who had played together for
several previous years. Koontz, in his first year out for the team, proved to be the find of the season, and
soon developed into a brilliant guard. With Haden at center, Broiles and Koontz at guard, and Johnson
and Barlow at forward, Coach Curtis found a team that was easily the strongest in the city high school
leagues. Near the middle of the season, Skaggs came out for the team and was made Koontz's running
mate at guard while Broiles was shifted to center. Central won the city championship without losing a

Once North Side, using a new style of play, held the lead until well in the last quarter when Johnson
and Barlow began getting loose from the Steer guards and soon put Central well in the lead. Another
time Poly held Central scoreless in the first quartet while looping five points to give them a good lead.
In the second quarter, Poly managed to hold their lead, but after that it was just a matter of time until
Central would pass them.
CITY CHAMPIONSHIP AND DISTRICT MEET
In the play off with Diamond Hill, Winners of the Class B Championship for the city championship
and right to represent Fort Worth at the district meet, the Panthers made quick work of the Hilltoppers.
The lirst game was played at Central's new gym. Diamond Hill, playing a rough game, jumped into
the lead early in the game, but Central soon overcame this lead and the game ended 25 to 17 in favor of
Central. The second game was just like the first with Diamond Hill leading at the first half. In the second
half Johnson got loose and looped eleven points to win the game for Central, 33 to 22, At Denton in
the district meet, the Panthers were eliminated by Forest Avenue when Forest scored four points in the last
minute of play to win, 21 to 19.
