Andrey Hanson June Hanson fanzes Hussey Betty Johnson Inztzates Constance Kiel Kathleen Laughlin Sherman lllyers l'l'ana'a Pester Chester Swanson M ary Spring Myrtle Thompson Doris lflfy00ll1Sf7'01l1f Chapter Un April 27 fifteen students became new members of the Na- tional Honor Society. Election to the society is the highest honor that the school can confer upon a student. It signifies the development Members of fine character, the maintaining of high scholarship, the rendering Margaret Ann Margaret For Robert lllcCall Claire Miller e Clark of outstanding service, and the manifestation of dependable leader- ship. Central High School acquired a charter for a local chapter of the National Honor Society last spring. At that time twelve seniors and five juniors were admitted to the organization in compliance with the rule that membership during any one year shall be limited to fifteen per cent of the graduating class and five per cent of the junior class. Only students who have a scholarship average high enough to place them in the upper third of their class are eligible for election. lfach candidate whose grades comply with this ruling is voted upon by the faculty and his fellow students individually to determine his right to membership in the society. No one outstanding characteristic will determine the election of a studentg he must rank high in each of the four points. The induction ceremony this year, introduced by Mr. Wikre, was conducted by Mr. Kohl with the assistance of the four charter members of the organization. These students. Claire Miller, Margaret Fox, Margaret Anne Clark and Robert McCall, represented the four ideals of the society. character, leadership, scholarship, and service. respectively. The ceremony was written and directed by Miss Alwin. The use of a formal stage setting added to the impressiveness of the ceremony. In the center of the backdrop was placed the sym- bol of the society, the keystone and liaming torch. The honor register occupied the center of the platform, at the sides of which were ar- ranged chairs for those participating in the ceremony. Other features of the setting were a large book containing pages inscribed with the society's four ideals and the trumpeters appearing before the cur- tains to introduce the program. As the name of each newly elected member was read. he signed the register and received the National Honor Society pin, which des- ignates his achievement and shows that he has won one of the most coveted honors in the school.
