CENTRAL HIGH SCHGCDL The history of Central High School is the story of the growth and progress of the city of Minne- apolis itself. The first building, located on the site of the present City Hall and Court House, signi- fied the desire of Minneapolis pioneers to give their young people as good an education as was then possible. When the city boundaries were ex- tended, the people decided to erect a new build- ing. It was erected in 1878 and was occupied until the present building was completed in 1913. Today Old Centraln has been con- demned and it will be replaced by the new Girls' Vocational High School. As the city grew larger, it was found that one school was inade- quate to fill the needs of the increasing popula- tion, other high schools were built. CENTRAL I-IIGI-l SCT-IOCDL Alter the occupation ol the present building in 1913, events began to shape the present course ol our school life. New clubs helped materially to build the now traditional Central spirit. All- American honors were won by the publications. The name Hgeniorn was changed to Hcentraliann and the annual seemed to grow with its name. The HNewsH was founded in 1914, Followed by the HQuestH in 1993. Meanwhile the great war had ended, talcing its toll ol twenty-six from our ranlcs, The sun-dial at the front entrance and the Hcentraliann For 1919 stand as lasting memorials to their heroism. Central alumni have gained dis- tinction in many Fields. Centralls spirit which has gathered Force with its years ol accomplishment is responsible lor its history ol achievement. Central is proud to have had him as a former student. Achievement is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow ol dreams, hope and ellort. It is reached by tal4ing one step at a time, and the road to it is marlced by signs of perseverance , concentra- tionn, no loiteringii. But vvhether hopes are realized or not, the greatest achievement of all is the voice of conscience ----- You are doing, or have done, your best. FLGYD GIBBONS A at . Rowfpaddoclv., Palmer, Zahner, Stark, Carroll PUBLICATIGNS NE of the most important activities in a high school is its publications. Central has three: the Quest, the literary magazine: the News. the school paper: and the Centralzan, the annual. When a new student is enrolled at Central he first becomes acquainted with the school and his fellow students by means of the News. He becomes familiar with the names of the students and the activities of the school as a whole. Then in the Quest. a magazine published by students interested in literary publica- tions and writings. he is enabled to read the stories and articles written by his own classmates. These two publications play a big part in his high school life. At the completion of each high school year, the Centralian is issued which enables him in later years to recall pleasant memories of his high school days. The annual contains pictures of all the graduates, the clubs, and other activities in school. Within the years of their existence these publications have won many high honors in both State and National contests. For the past seven consecutive years the Quest has been awarded an All-American honor rating in the National High School Press Association conventions. In 1929. the News was judged the best High School Weekly in the United States in a contest sponsored by the Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania. The Cen- lrulian has been accorded All-American ratings and received a First Honor rating in 1930. The Central High publications have also been awarded first honors among the country's schools in contests conducted by the Quill and Scroll, National Honorary Society for High School Journalists. XVithin the past year a chapter of the Quill and Scroll has been established at Central. Students who are on the school publications and who have met the requirements of the Quill and Scroll are eligible for membership. The present chapter, which is shown above. consists of eleven members. Eighfg-One I I KLNNIZTH RAY NI.-XRMARIHI' IIAI I ARI? We feel that in presenting the school in its past and present standing we have given a brief of Central's accomplishments. From outstanding alumni we have been fortunate in securing special messages on our theme, Achievement. We hope that these will prove an inspiration to future graduates. A condensed history of the school has been featured in order that the relations between past and present might be more distinctly realized. Our new trophy room has been given a prominent place as it is a very real gauge of Central's success in all sorts of competition, The room should stand as a goal leading the students to greater attainments. Vvle are confident that. if the same progress continues. Central will maintain its superb record. Vv'e hope that this annual and the classes featured herein will contribute their small bit to that record. Central l-ligh isindeed proud to have had some part in the building of such a personality as Mr. Alcersonls. To be a leader, achieving high success, one must learn First to cooperate. No better opportunity For such a spirit can be found than exists in our organizations at Central. As sane outlets lor the Hgangl' spirit inherent in us all, school organizations influence students long alter graduation. SCHOOL ORGANIZATIONS O further an interest in various elective courses and to provide an oppor- tunity for social contact among students who have similar interests. many clubs have been organized. Their work is carried on by students with the help of faculty advisers. Some of the organizations have been formed expressly for school service. The Student Council is one of these. Its members include the four officers of the A senior class. the editor-in-chief of the News. two representatives from the UB senior class. and presidents of the Ciirls' Club. Ci. A. A.. Hi-Y. and Girl Reserves. The Council represents student opinion in conference with the principal on questions of particular interest to the student body. The C. C. C.. standing for Cleanliness. Consideration. and Courtesy. is made up of students who act as ofhcials to enforce school rules and report delinquencies in student conduct in halls. lunchroom. and assemblies. The members of the Library Board are appointed by Miss Anna Belle Thomas. assistant principal. Two members are in charge of the library each period to maintain order. The stage force is a group of boys who assist Mr. Hepp in managing the stage apparatus when entertainments are presented in the auditorium. A bank cashier is ap- pointed from each advisory who takes care of all banking for the group. The Girls' Club also might come under the head of service since its purpose is to promote the interests of the girls. All girls are eligible for membership. The I-li-Y for boys and Girl Reserves for girls are high school chapters of the Y. M. C. A. and Y. XV. C.A. Their object is to develop Christian char- acter. The language clubs are open to students of foreign languages and aim to increase interest in language study. Central has four: Latin Club. French Club. Scandinavian Club. and Spanish Club. This year the Latin Club presented an assembly in honor of the Bimillenium Vergilianum. The Commercial Club. Botany Club. and Skylite Club are organizations for persons enrolled in com- mercial subjects. in Botany. and in art. respectively. For students who prove their ability in vocal and instrumental music. Central offers the Glee Club. Or- chestra and Band. The orchestra and band are called upon to assist on many programs during the year. The Glee Club presented the Messiah at Christ- mas time. and the opera. The Two Vagabondsf' in April. Three new clubs have been organized this year: Talent Club. Mimes and Nlummers. and Stamp Club. The O. A. A.. Ciirls' Athletic Association, is open to all girls interested in athletics. The best achievement an athlete gets out oflsports is that he has to learn that he must take defeat or victory with equal calmness. Sports also have the tendency to build up real friendshipsf the training in sports helps in various ways to assist one to tight the ups and downs of lile's battles. l would, under no circumstances, give up the training l re- ceived while a student at Central l ligh or at Yale Qniversity. ln other words, l think there are few opportunities forfa better education than the op- portunity to partalce in clean sports. WALTER W. I-IEFFELFINGER up J NA 1 X1 42 4. I D- A 1 s.,,. sf' J S MR. WEBER MISS BELL MISS ZIEMER MR. MARKLEY PHYSICAL EDUCATION BUILDERS of clean minds and sound healthy bodies, creators of fine sports- manship and good fellowship, and faithful advisers they are, everyone of them! Nothing too much can be said in praise of the constructive work which Miss Bell and Miss Ziemer have accomplished as girls' physical education instructors. Both are splendid examples of good health and clean living, and provide in- spiration for the girls they work with. Mr. Markley and Mr. Weber, as all around good fellows, forceful instructors, and patient. helpful advisers, cannot be surpassed. Besides his work as a physical education instructor, Joe Markley has coached both the football and track teams for the past seven years and has attained the highly enviable record of four championships and a second place. His track teams also have maintained the same high measure of success. One of the most commendable and constructive works of the physical educa- tion department is the organization of intra-mural competition in track and diamondball between the various classes. It arouses interest in health-building activities, promotes fine sportsmanship, and affords a measure of recreation, which in its turn aids in better scholarship. It is, indeed, an inspiring sight to witness the vim and vigor which is displayed by the participants in these intra- mural sports. Under the personal supervision of Miss Bell and Miss Ziemer the girls' gymnasium classes are made periods to which the girls look eagerly forward as an hour of complete enjoyment. The classes are divided so that each girl has a choice between tap-dancing, athletics, or physical exercise. Through this system the talented individuals are brought out, and a complete hour of recreation is thoroughly enjoyed. We, as Seniors, are doubly thankful for the important role you played in making our life at Central one of enjoyment and worth. Coach Weston W. Mitchell again presented one of his usual Hue-balanced, smooth-passing combinations which boasted a fine scoring punch in the persons of George Roscoe and I-larry Dahlquist and a pair of brilliant guards in Wayne Peterson and Bernard Palmer. But even these valuable assets fell short of producing a victory in the championship game with South. in which the Tigers displayed a brilliant style of basketball to defeat the Red-Blue, 30-14. George Roscoe. for the second consecutive year, was high scorer in the prep conference and was a unanimous choice for an All-City position. Fourth CHARLES CLINE HARRY HOIOSEN ADLY handicapped by lack of veterans and early season injuries, Joe Markley finally assembled an aggregation which was good enough to capture fourth place in the Carleton, Quadrangle and City Meets. The only default in the squad was a decided lack of balance, which is a great handicap in any track team. Featuring all of the meets was the smooth, consistent running of Harry Hoiosen and Charles Cline, Hoiosen placing second in the 100 at the Carleton meet. and Cline consistently earning points throughout the season. Milton Krouse in the 220 and Joe Scammon in the hurdles were also great factors in the achievement of the squad and both earned letters for their accomplishments. After a long and successful service in the capacity of a track coach, during which time he developed six championship squads. Joe Markley has decided to give up his track activities. He will be succeeded by William Hawker, himself a former track star. Not content with this honor alone. he captured the Northwest record in the breast stroke and before his graduation he is expected to develop into the most finished performer ever turned out at Central. John Sevareid also was a consistent point winner throughout the season, swimming the hundred- yard backstroke. His efforts, likewise, gained him a coveted position on the All-Star aggregation. Our two faculty advisers deserve unlimited credit for their hard work in developing The Centraltun. Miss Mary Harris. our faculty adviser, has won a place in the heart of each of us by her patient tolerance of our mistakes and her firm judgment which has bolstered up our courage during trying hours. Vvlithout the able assistance of Miss Ella Witter we would have been lost in a sea of technical terms. Her wide experience has acted as a life-buoy to us, for every time we were puzzled she has come to our assistance with illuminating advice. She was very ably assisted by the senior art class whose members designed all the color work of the book. All the noted alumni whose pictures and messages you have seen were very prompt in responding to our requests. We wish especially to thank Mr. Don Gibbons for securing the picture ol' Floyd Gibbons for us. We also thank Mrs. Alice Drechsler for the picture of Miss May Lydon. Our subscription drive was greatly augmented by the splen- did talks of Miss Laura Henry's public speaking class. Miss Henry certainly helped us put across that campaign. We also owe a great deal to Robert Bruce and Katherine Struble for their inspiring speeches at our subscription assembly. Miss Grosz directed our skit that day and also helped to write it. Every performer in our subscription skit and our Centralian Day assembly added indirectly to building this annual. Appre- ciation is also due the room representatives who spent much time in collecting our subscription money. Our contacts with these people have taught us the value of cooperation in the world and the necessity of performing to the best of our ability every task. however small.
