City Champs ’86-’87 Chargers defeat Northeast, 51-0, and Southwest, 8-7 he Central Chargers claimed the 1986 - 87 football City Cham- pions title as they routed Northeast, 51 to 0, and slipped by Southwest in a season-ending thriller, 8 to 7. Getting off to a slow 0-3 start, the Chargers came back with a win over Hephzibah in the Homecoming game, thanks to an awe- some job by the defense, which had five sacks for a minus 45 yards. Staring a drive with an excellent punt return by Earl Sanders the Chargers took the lead, 7 to 0, and never looked back. The team went in at the half with a comfortable 21 to 0 lead, and added seven more in the fourth to finish with a 28 to O win. After Hephzibah, the Chargers only managed to win one of their next four games, losing to Warner Robins, Northside, and Baldwin County. The one win, though, 51 to 0 over Northeast, put the squad in contention for the city title. The team only had one more obstacle: Southwest. Southwest, having also beaten Northeast earlier in the season, took a 7 to O lead in the first quarter. They held this lead until the fourth quarter when Charger quarterback Victor Griffin threw a fourth down, 22-yard pass to Bobby Ketchup who pulled down a spectacular, one- handed catch and fell in the end zone which, plus the extra point tied the game 7 to 7 with about eight minutes to go. The game ended at 7 to 7 deadlock thus sending the Chargers and Patriots into overtime. The rule of overtime is if a team doesn’t score in two overtimes, the one with the deepest penetration in the two overtimes wins. Thanks to a Lewis Huff interception and a Mark Davis 30-yard run to Southwest's 20-yard line in the second overtime the Chargers claimed the win, 8 to 7, along with the city championship. Despite a 5-7 record, the varsity football squad had ap’‘peel.
