Especially if every week, week after week, for 48 solid minutes, you are part of the hardest hitting football game around. It takes a lot of internal fortitude. Even when you reach your goal, it may be blurred. They never lost sight of their goal, not even at the end. They played with a lot of class and they played with a lot of heart. And they will alway be — STEINER’S STUDS Milton Mathis Ogden Hansford Derrick Benns John Andrews 99 Jerome Johnson ae = ps “agp. ix a c . = a a Steve Dennis Al Lewis Mack Guest 100 Michael Jolly Greg Swint Shane, Bill, Donnie, Scott, and Steve Sammy Marshal David Taylor 101 CENTRAL CLIPS CLARK CENTRAL 9-8 Al Pollard gave us a glimpse at the way he would perform all year as he was the workhorse. Ramon DeMichiel was as sharp as he would be all year. The defense was tough and strong and caught Clark’s quar- terback for a safety. David Taylor showed us his stuff with a 31-yard F. G. that was called back. Central dominated everything but the score, but that would hap- pen many more times. CENTRAL SHUTS OUT WESTSIDE 49-0 The Big Orange rolled right into Augusta and poured it on Westside. It seemed as if everyone got into the act. They really stole the show. Central rolled up 361 yards in a 49-0 shut-out with Al Pollard being the workhorse again. CENTRAL CRUSHES RICHMOND ACADEMY The Chargers, gaining experience every game, showed Richmond Acade- my a couple of things as they won going away 49-6. Central scored in a variety of ways. Twice on punt returns, twice on flanker reverses, once ona pass, once on a run, and once on a fumble recovery. Ogden Hansford scored twice, so did Milton Mathis, and David Taylor kicked seven extra points, which was not unusual for any of them. CENTRAL JOLTS PATRIOTS 16-13 This game was a turning point. The Chargers, down 13-0 at the end of the first quarter, put it all together to beat a fired up Southwest team. Courage was the key. After the first half, the tough Central defense held Southwest to virtually nothing and the offense, performing like veterans, got cranked and rolled to victory. The no name interior lineman won the game for Central. CENTRAL BITES BUTLER The Central offense broke open a close game in the fourth quarter to defeat Butler 14-0. Neither team could do much in the first half as no one could cross the other’s twenty yard line. Mack Guest batted down a pass to set up the Big Orange’s second touchdown and to ice the game. Defense was the name of the game for both teams couldn’t move the ball. Hardaway had a chance on Ogden Hansford’s fumble as they went to the Central 4, but Central defense stiffened. Dennis Barbare was superb all night kicking nine times for a 44.3 yard average. It was very close. eat ge CENTRAL CLAWS GLENN HILLS Coach Steiner was smiling when the buzzer sounded. The game was a shut-out and he liked it. Al Pollard scored—so did Milton, and linebacker Jimmy Lewis intercepted a pass that wrapped the game up. Steve Dennis played well and junior Harry Colbert caught three passes. The defense, with the help of Mack Guest’s two fumble recovers, kept Glenn Hills bottled up all night. It was a good Homecoming game! CHARGERS WALLOP LUCEY LANEY 24-6 The Central Chargers, behind the bullet passing of Ramon DeMichiel shocked Lucey Laney 24-6. Laney was ranked third in the state coming into the game. The offense, with the help of Dwight Jackson, gave Ramon all the protection he needed. The hard-hitting defense racked up four fumble recoveries by Dennis, Benns, Mathis and Callaway, and John Andrews’ interception. - = t- . es eS ee art CHARGERS ROAR BY RAIDERS the defense it was a shut out, for Coach Steiner it was another night to smile. The Big Orange had just blitzed Northeast by the score of 49-0. Al Pollard had a 79-yard run and Ramon DeMichiel a 44-yard run, both for T.D. As for the defense, it was another night to shine as they held Northeast scoreless for the third consecu- tive year. JOSEY JINXED CHARGERS UNDEFEATED Linebacker Neil Callaway inter- cepted a pass and ran it back 36 yards to set Central’s second touch- down in a 28-0 rout of Josey. The defense was _ virtually impregnable all night as they limit- ed Josey to 28 total yards. The victory gave to the Chargers the 4-AAA championship and the right to meet Warner Robins in the state playoffs. THE STATE AAA Talk about rivalry. This was one of the most talked about in the state. The whole city of Warner Robins wanted to beat Godfrey Steiner. But he came through, the other coaches came through, and the team came through. What a difference a year made. Central came back to Warner Robins and beat the Demons 10 to yi Offensively, guards, Neil Calla- way and David Taylor, and Center, Rusty Schlottman, opened huge holes for the ground game. PLAYOFFS Jimmy Lewis recovered a fumble to set up David Taylor’s winning field goal. Milton Mathis and John Andrews paced the defensive secon- dary, with Andrews making a game- saving tackle. The Defense got its toughest test with 6:07 remaining, Warner Robins with the ball, and Central with a 3 point lead. They made the margin stand and as the game ended Coach Steiner, in his jubilation, remarked that he didn’t care if they had to play the Miami Dolphins next week. CENTRAL 10 — W.R. 7 113 SEMIFINAL MOME Bi VISITOR The top-ranked Moultrie Packers fell to the mighty Chargers by a score of 16-15, with the penetra- tion system adding the final points to a tie score of 14-14. The Chargers opened with a drive that ended with 3 points. Cen- tral almost totally dominated the statistics. The Packers could only manage one good drive the whole game. Three thousand Central fans watched the Chargers come from behind to beat the team many people had picked to succeed Val- dosta as State champions. Milton Mathis had the greatest game of his career as he caught the touchdown and the two point pass play among four defenders. CENTRAL — 16 MOULTRIE — 15 11 STATE — AAA — FINALS CENTRAL VS. LAKESIDE Central was gunning for their first state championship. Lakeside was going for its second in two years. The Chargers got beat, but not outgutted. Everyone played their hearts out, but Lakeside was just that much better. Breaks were a big factor. Dennis Barbare had a punt blocked; David Taylor missed one, too. It was that kind of a night. Still it was a hard- fought game, and everyone was convinced that Lakeside was better, with the exception of Central’s fans. Sn ore y Nu ot A re Bas +} aes ani GL ORY, GLORY TO OLD CENTRAL Central came back twice after being down 21-0 and 36-13. This team was truly a Cinderella team that just didn’t know how to quit. For Coach Steiner, it was an honor to coach them, and for the players, it was an honor to play for him. QUEEN —: Te, Fe 4 oe ee i “« — . “-. 2 a®.
