Nevertheless we all were Freshmen together. Our May Queen attendants that year were Shirley Morton and Char- lotte Barber. Our class representatives in Student Council were Colleen Smith and Ruth Lee Cuthbertson. September, 1946 we returned to Central as Sophomores and felt more at home in high school. Edythe Alexander and Norma Kitzmiller were our attendants to the May Queen. The heralds that year also came from our class-Colleen Nolan and Norma Jean McCormack. Our represen- tatives in Student Council were Dorothy Johnson, Phyllis Goodwin, Mike Campbell, and Ruth Cuthbertson. Mr. Delaney, mathematics teacher, left us at mid-year. Our new math- ematics teacher, Mrs. Ketter, finished out the year with us. A Biology Club was organized under the leadership of Mr. Hodgdon. We had many wonderful times on our field trips. Biology was much more interesting because of that club and those trips. As Juniors we held our first class meeting and elected officers. Ruth Cuthbertson, President, Ann Broderick, Vice President, Charlotte Barber, Secretary, and Raymond Ralston, Treasurer. Mr. Hodgdon was our class adviser. Our first problem was to raise money for the Junior-Senior Prom. We sold hotdogs, candy, and pop at all the basketball games. We held a bake sale at Atkinson's store, and had a Harvest Dance in the school gym, we also had a movie and a Valentine Dance. Then to highlight the year, we entertained the Seniors at the Junior- Senior Prom on May 28th. We danced under the pink and blue deco- rations from 9 to 12, to music by Ted Williams and his Aristocrats. Everyone pronounced it a really perfect prom. We received our class rings in January. Naturally, our rings are just about the loveliest we have ever seen. In our Senior year, Ruth Cuthbertson was elected President, Jeanette Gowans, Vice President, William Neff, Secretary, and Raymond Ralston, Treasurer. As a class project this year we worked and published what we thought was one of the finest yearbooks in the history of Central High School. Now that it is time for us to leave Central we begin to realize just how much this old school has meant to us. We hope that as a class and as individuals we have measured up to the fine traditions set up for us and left for us to preserve. ax i. L-I I I 1 U ' 'MM 5. r f' i H Q I . fs 0. Our first official act as Freshmen was to elect offi- cers. For 9-A section they were Rachel Marshall, President, Mary Mc- Partland, Vice President, Alan Arnold, Treasurer, and Rose Marie Dilfer, Secretary. For 9-B section - Margaret Bogie, President, Rose Marie Rowan, Secretary-Treasurer, and Charles Schramm, Vice President. Many activities were carried on in our Freshman year. Rose Marie Rowan and Mary McPartland were the Freshman representatives in the May Queen's court. ' Our Sophomore year was a very pleasant one. At our class election we made Margaret Bogie, President, Jeanette Kirkwood, Vice President, Rose Marie Dilfer, Treasurer, and Danile Crable, Secretary, Mr. E. J. Lewicki was our class adviser. While Sophomores we published a class paper, Tiger Tales. This paper proved very successful. A Dramatic Club and a Bird Club were organized under the leadership of Miss Mayer and of Mr. Hodgdon. This year Jeanette Kirkwood and Rachel Marshall were the May Queen Attendants for our class. When our Junior year opened we had a serious problem comfronting us because our class adviser had left to teach in another school. For our new adviser Mr. Shirey was our choice. The officers elected were Isaac Love, President, Jack Miller, Vice President, Jeanette Kirkwood, Treas- urer, and Margaret Bogie, Secretary. How thrilled we were the day we selected our class rings. Our Happi- ness was complete when the rings arrived. We are so proud to wear them. May 27 was chosen as the date for the Junior-Senior Prom. The least that may be said is that the prom was a social and artistic success. Now in a few short months we shall move up to the rank of Seniors. We all hope our final year in Central will be as successful and happy as our Junior year has been. 4 1 V 1 , 7' ' p 3 'LU G . io , -1 . J ., figs: if il w ' f 1 Q '35 ,P ' cv. , h H? mx' I . SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY We entered High School in September, 1947, as one of the largest. 9th grade classes in Central. We felt that our school year was truly launched when we met to elect our class officers. Those entrusted with the official responsibilities of 9-A section were: Wanda Groves, President, Gene Reiber, Vice Presi- dent, Nancy Clark, Secretary, and Robert Haugen, Treasurer. For 9-B section the officers were Bobby Cook, President, Janet Metz, Vice Presi- dent, and Lucy Lee, Secretary-Treasurer. 9-A and 9-B boys and 9-A and 9-B girls competed against each other in basketball, 9-B boys and 9-B girls came off the victors. Some members of the class represented us in the track events, in the minstrel, in the cantata, in basketball, in soccer, and in the bird club. There were also two reporters from each section for the paper Tiger Tales. May Queen attendants for our Freshman year were Wanda Groves and Glenna Lyden. The Heralds also came from our class-Sally Mc- Partland and Lucy Lee. After a long and happy vacation, we returned to school as important Sophomores to play our part in the life and the activities of Central. A spirited election of officers for our present year resulted in Jean Reinhart, President, Patsy Ann Amoroso, Secretary, and Lucy Lee, Treas- urer. We elected Miss Mayer for our class adviser. Members of our class did commendable work in soccer and in basket- ball during the fall and winter. Valentine Day was taken advantage of when we held our first dance to celebrate that occasion. We now look forward to our last two years of high school life. win T tv xi I I .U .ht w-- I3 X gg! 3' - x 'Q p, C 5. N ,Y ,N fin. The following were elected to office: Jack Meese, President, Tommy Kelly, Vice President, Bertha Meese, Secretary, Catherine Dye, Treasurer, and Billy Freeman, Historian, Mrs. Sloan, class sponsor. Among the things decided upon at the first meeting were class dues to be paid on the 15th of every month, fthis money to be used to defray any expense that might occurj and a class outing to be scheduled for sometime in the spring. The 9th grade had charge of the Thanksgiving assembly program pre- sented on November 24th. Sixteen out of 38 in 9-A took part. We count among the musically inclined in our home room two pianists, one of these is the school associate pianist, and six who play other musical instru- ments. Four boys from 9-A made the basketball squad - Bill Robertson, Tommy Kelly, Eddie Mclntyre, and Jack Meese, Three girls from 9-A made the girls squad-Leah Jean Cook, Lois Timney, and Joann Duckworth. 9-B CLASS HISTORY The year 1948-49 opened for 9-B class with an enrollment of 39 pupils. Two members withdrew during the year. The Class elected the follow- ing officers: John. Ralston, President, John Rooney, Vice President, Ann Smith, Secretary, and Ardthe McKenzie, Treasurer. Three boys from 9-B on the basketball squad were Jack Moffatt, John Ralston, and Paul Mills. Jean Kitzmiller was on the cheerleaders team. The class under the supervision of Mr. Hodgdon had charge of part of the Thanksgiving assembly program. For the first two six-week periods, 9-B pupils on the honor roll were Colleen Bittinger, Ann Smith, Margaret Leake, and Shirley Warnick. For our Christmas Party, we decorated the room and had a Christmas tree. Pupils exchanged gifts and served refreshments. It was a happy day. We hope our class will have a successful record during our Sophomore year. The Tigers came out second in the Western Maryland Interstate League with just three points fewer than Bruce. The team played outstanding soccer. Congratulations to Coach Meyers and his boys. The Tigers record this season was one of creditable performance end- ing the season with 5 wins, 1 tie, and 2 defeats. Although Beall proved to be a tough foe, Central came out on top each time they met. Bruce was the toughest foe Central encountered. During the fourth game of the season, Central lost Curtis Johnson, a regular half-back. He injured his shoulder during the game with Bruce. Raymond Ralston led the scorers for Central and also in the League with eight field goals. Allen Stafford, lineman, did a good job as feeder for Ralston. Glenwood Grove, Martin Eichhorn, Robert Jeffries, and Don McKenzie played outstanding games in the backiield consistently taking the ball from the opponents and driving it forward. Bill Lucas was a formidable man at the uprights preventing many points from being reg- istered against the Tigers. Honored by being chosen for the Western Maryland Interstate All- Star Team were four Central Tigers-Ray Ralston, Allen Stafford, Bill Lucas, and Don McKenzie, Bobby Jeffries was listed for second team. In doing so they have given more students experience and they themselves have spotted pros- pects for Varsity Teams for another year. The Junior High girls showed very much enthusiasm about these games, and a few of their parents came to see them play. The cheerleaders added much color to the games. The annual Hallowe'en Dance, the first of the year, was held by the Seniors on October 29. The gym was decorated in orange and black crepe paper while black cats, pumpkins, and skeletons appeared at the least expected places. The fun house contrived by Paul Johnson, was one of the highlights of the evening's amusements. Wanda Groves and Eddie J. Kenny were chosen Queen and King of Hallowe'en. Senior boys were in charge of refreshments. On November 28, a Harvest Dance was arranged by the Juniors. Their color scheme was yellow and blue. Kathleen Woods and Billy Johnson were crowned Queen and King of Harvest Time. Plaid shirts and blue- jeans were worn by practically everyone. A Sports Dance was sponsored by the girls Physical Education Depart- ment on December 10. The medley of colors used helped to accentuate the big fireplace in front of the stage and to give an atmosphere of coziness and informality. During intermission a floor-show was given by Frances Schlerth, John Foote, Merrbaugh Twins, Shirley Green, Helen Whiteman, Jeanette Kirkwood, Phyllis Alexander, and Eleanor Whitefield. Mr. McCullough took pictures of several entertainers and of dancers during the evening. The Seniors held a Poverty Dance on February 4. Shirley Lucas and Bobby Taylor were proclaimed Queen and King of Hobos. Anything that could be found served as decoration. Although a poverty dance, there was an abundance of fun. Now we come to the dance that all upper classmen look forward to- the Junior-Senior Prom. May 27th was the date, the Aristocrats sounded the melody and rhythm for the light fantastic toes . Each girl in her evening gown was a vision of loveliness, while every boy seemed to be radiantly happy with his dream girl. A perfect dance? Yes, one long to be membered.
