But the years passed quickly until finally we have reached our goal. In our Freshman year, we elected Mrs. Byers as our sponsor. And we'll never forget how excited we felt to be able to attend the Senior High Assembly Programs. It was during our Sophomore year that the Christmas Cantata The Childe Jesus was presented in which most of our class took part. Several of our classmates left during this year to get iobs and to ioin the Armed Forces. Dorothy Wilson was the beauty of our class and school during this year and was crowned at the Halloween Carnival. During our Junior year, we began to feel very important. We ordered our class rings and held the Junior-Senior Prom with the Aristocrats furnishing the music. Hot dogs were sold at basketball games to help raise the money for the prom. The Student Council was reorganized this year. Our Senior year began successfully with the presentation of the Georgia Jubilee Minstrel . A formal election to select our Student Councilmen was held and the officers were installed during a special assembly. A Christmas play was put on under the direc- tion of Miss Cline and Mr. Derry at which Leslie Goodwin, the president of our class, was presented the staff of Leadership. We were thrilled to have with us this year a group of veterans, who, upon coming back from the war, wished to continue their education and earn diplomas. Now that this has almost been accomplished, we want to wish you boys good luck in your future undertakings. Name cards and announcements were selected, pictures taken, and the Yearbook Staff chosen to publish for the second year The Centralian , before we began to realize that the end would soon be here. Our class will be the second to wear caps and gowns. The class colors are red and silver and the flower is the red rose. Now that we have completed that long road, we think of the many happy experi- ences we have had along the way. We hope that the rest of our days will be as happy as our School Days'1: We sincerely hope that all fifty-eight members of our class will be ever faithful to their teachers, friends and alma mater. These members were selected by the music instructor from the Junior and Senior classes. One of the many activities presented by the Music Department during the year wos the Minstrel. It consisted of a cost of pupils assisted by the entire chorus. The outstanding members of the cost were the interlocutor and the end men. rg Under the direction of Mr. Joseph L. Derry, our school has established on orchestra consisting of nineteen members, including grades seven to twelve. Jean Milford has served faithfully as pianist throughout the year, working with the orchestra, glee club, A Capella, and also accompanying independent musical events. , , . s . 4 A Glee Club has also been organized. The members participate in all of the school's musical events and in the County's Spring Festival. It is composed of Sophomore. Junior, and Senior pupils. DANCES The dances which took place during this school year brought so much enioyment that they will always linger in our minds. HARVEST AND VALENTINE DANCES The Cheerleaders held two dances which were the Harvest Dance and the Valen- tine Dance. At the Harvest Dance everyone was attired in blue jeans and plaid shirts. The Jitterbug Contest, which was held that night, was won by Betty Lou Robertson and Junior Trost. The outstanding event of the Valentine Dance was the choosing of the Sweetheart Couple, namely Marie Leake and Bobby Muir. CHRISTMAS DANCE One of the formal dances of the year was the Christmas Dance which the Student Council sponsored. The season's greetings were spread that night by a large Christmas tree, decorations, and also Santa Claus who distributed gifts to everyone. SPRING DANCE The Juniors held a Spring Dance on March the 21st which was an outstanding event of the month. At this time Phyllis Goodwin and Billy Neff were chosen King and Queen of Spring. THE PROM On the evening of May the 29th we had our Prom which was sponsored by the Junior Class. A wonderful time was enioyed by all the Seniors, Juniors, and Alumna who attended. The red and silver decorations, the colors of the Senior Class, and the beautiful, assorted colors of the gowns made a very picturesque scene. The Aristocrats furnished the music. DANCE CLUB Dance Club is held every Tuesday evening from 7:30 to 9:00. Music is provided by the school's amplifier and records purchased with the proceeds from membership cards and dues. It was organized by Mr. John Leo Delaney, our sponsor, for the first part of the year. The purposes of this club are to teach pupils to dance and to become better dancers. The Year Book Staff is made up of fifteen members from the Senior Class. During the time they spent working on the Year Book they were under the skillful guidance of Mr. Kendrick Y. Hodgdon, their sponsor. The Staff wishes to express its appreciation for the cooperation of all those who helped to make this Year Book a success. The Student Council is one of the most active organizations in our school, even though it was resumed iust last year. Each room from the seventh to the twelfth grade is represented at the meetings by two pupils. lts officers are: President, Dorothy Wilson: Vice-President, James Langley, Secretary, George Grindle, and Treasurer, Shirley Mae Foote. McKenzie, P: Green, R. Hadley, R. Moffatt, and Coach Carrington. We feel sure that soccer is here to stay. The 1946-47 team showed great improve- ment over last year's. There was a large turnout this year, which shows that the boys are really interested in this exciting sport. Our undaunted players registered two decided victories this season, beating Flint- stone 3-0, and handing out a defeat to Barton 3-0. Both of these games were very interesting, not only because of the scores, but because both teams put forth everything they had. Other outstanding games during the season were played against Bruce and Beall. Soccer has presented an entirely new field in the line of sports to most of us, as last year was the first time in six years that a soccer league was formed. Probably next year will see several new teams in the Western Maryland interscholastic Soccer League. We will have several veterans returning next year, which should make a compara- tively strong team. We feel confident that with a determined effort, and a spirited backing, these lads will really make a fine showing. Xe? - . s We BASKETBALL J, Green R. RGlSfOr'l P, Cook M. Eichhorn W. Rowan, Coach Carrington P. Preston B. Muir H. Stafford .l. Love A. Patton Once again, this year's basketball team was composed of inexperienced players, with only one regular remaining from the i946-47 team. Despite this decided handicap they entered the season with determination to fight and continue fighting right to the finish, no matter what the results of the games might be. This spirit was evident at all of the games played, even though the percentage of games won was low. We feel proud of this fact. Among Central's victories this year were wins over Bruce and Oakland. Other outstanding games were played against Barton and Shanksville. The climax of the season was reached when Central met Bruce in a game to determine the Class C champions. Unfortunately, Bruce was the victor in a thrilling encounter played on the neutral floor at Piedmont. ' Next year, with a large number of holdovers returning, Central is looking forward to a successful season. We feel sure that if the same enthusiasm is shown then as was shown this year, it will be a successful season. Good luck, fellows, we'll be with you. --f -1 -r GIRLS SPORTS For the first time in several years a girls' team has been established in basketball. Only one other school in our district, which is Bruce, had a team which we could compete against. Central's team was organized under the direction of the coach, Miss Julia Wetzel. The line-ups of the team are: Forwards Guards Dorothy Wilson Margie Bradley Jean Orr Shirley Foote Wilma Thompson Elmeda Castle Alma Henry Marion Crosser Lois Cook Jean Ralston Eva Boettcher Dorothy Brown The Central Tiger Girls were victorious in their first game, playing at Bruce. The score was 18-l l. Dorothy Big Dot Wilson played an outstanding game. Unfortunately during the second game, even with the quick-witted Lois Cook, who took the spotlight at this time, the girls were defeated. Bruce won with the score 22-21. In both games outstanding playing and sportsmanship was displayed by botn teams. We sincerely hope that Central will take steps towards organizing a permanen' girls' team. We are also grateful to the many townspeople who contributed so generously toward helping us meet the expenses involved.
