JOHN MERRIMAN English Because English is our native language we often take our ability to speak it for granted. Yet, when we realize that English is a required foreign language in almost all the European countries, we can see how important knowledge of the English language is to the western world in communication and maintain- ing peace. English is a required course here, too, both to graduate from high school and to enter college. We studied verbs, nouns, and dangling participles, and read Dickens and Twain, and we talked about life OS well as literature. We began to recognize good writing, and learned to write more effectively. Proficiency in English was gained not only through the study of grammar and literature which we re- ceived in our required English courses, but also through electives offered to us. Developmental reading helped us to improve our reading comprehension and speed. We read more every day, and finally got so we could read faster than the timer could run. Study of the literature of England from the be- ginning epic to modern authors was covered in the English literature classes. We studied different styles, and the effects of history on the writing of the time. Pat Stillwagon, Ann Boehm, Pam Orr, and Roberla Rakow use one of the many reading accelerators in Developmental Reading class. The obiecfi ' reading rate. to speed up the students

Speech acquainted us with the process of preparing a good speech and through prac- tice we gained confidence in our speaking ability. In class we laughed at pantomimes, and did serious speaking. Journalism covered the fundamentals of newspaper writing, the inclusion of who, what, where, when and why in a concise account. We also studied editorial and fea- ture writing, and put out an issue of the Interlude . Through these courses we learnedtheskills to help us express our thoughts and opinions more clearly.
