This is your Life, we ' ve come to the end of our road. Life is Like a Jewel, So I ' m told. Well it ' s been a Long time with Hardships most of the way. Some of us have a future Some have a brighter day. But look at one another and say, we made it through. When we first started going to school you thought it was real cool But now I ' m Looking and searching for a brigh ter day Well there ' s someone who wants to quit and come back and maybe try again Some of us have a future Some have a brighter day But look at one another and say we made it through As times fly by School gets slow you think you ' re young But you ' re feeling old, So take the time and make a smile it might be nice because it ' s worthwhile Some of us have a future Some have a brighter day But there ' s none who can never say, you know we made it, made it, through because it was worthwhile by: Melvin Stewart Levi Figgures Class fflotto We are just leaping over the hill; and we have a huge mountain to climb. by: Eddie Rucker Wanda McKinney Class $oem For all of us there comes a moment, a moment unlike before . . . When suddenly, something is that was not, in some special way a new world opens. Through the years we ' ve been touched by many emotions, emotions felt by means beyond explaining or expressing. But now . . . Somehow things are different We now stand united, but yet, As Individuals . . . Awed . . . Wordless and Perhaps even afraid. Our Brief encounters of tenderness and closeness were good . . . Those Moments soar, into never abandoned Eternity. by: Chuck Tolhurst 50 51 The Class Of 1976 Hails the ' Class 9 Of 1936 By Maury De ' Joage First Lady Betty Ford, a 1936 graduate of Central High School, will participate in the school ' s commencement exercises this June. Word of Mrs. Ford ' s appearance was con- firmed by her appointment secretary, Susan Porter, who told The Press that an official announcement is being prepared. Central will hold its graduation exercises at 8 p.m. Monday, June 7, at the George W. Welsh Civic Auditorium, according to Paul Kelly, senior class president, and Jan D. Treur, senior class advisor. Mrs. Ford will make remarks to the graduating class rather than deliver a formal address, Truer said. In his letter to Mrs. Ford, Treur said that a $100 honorarium has been established by the senior class for this purpose. He noted that last summer The Press listed many illustrious alumni of Central, including the late Sen. Arthur H. Vandenberg. We believe that some permanent recognition of the contributions and achievements of these alumni has merit What form this recognition eventually will take has not yet been deter- mined. Treur wrote that the school wishes to make a beginning by establishing a Distinguished Alumni Award , should you decide to accept our invitation. This would mean the installation of a plaque at Central High as well as the presenta- tion of a plaque to you in recognition of the honor you have brought to Central High for you distinguished contributions as First Lady. The letter was sent to Mrs. Ford March 4, and Treur received a telephone call from the White House Monday saying Mrs. Ford had accepted the invitation. A telephone call to Ms. Porter confirmed what Treur had been told. Other distingushed alumni of the school include Constance Rourke, American biog- rapher; Houston McBain, president of Mar- shall Field Co.; John B. Martin, Rhodes scholar, former Republican National Commit- teeman and former head of the President ' s Council on Aging. Arnold Gingrich, founder and editor of Esquire Magazine; Willoughby Bouton, con- cert pianist; Seymour Beach Conger, foreign correspondent; Paul Goebel, former mayor of Grand Rapids and former member of the University of Michigan Board of Regents, and Roger B. Chaffee, astronaut, who was killed Jan. 27, 1967, in a fire that swept through the capsule of Apollo I in a flight drill. Admission to the commencement exercises probably will be by ticket only. Kelly said this may be necessary because of the crowd Mrs. Ford probably will attract and to eliminate disappointment on the part of relatives and friends of the graduating students. It will be the first visit by Mrs. Ford to Grand Rapjds since her husband became President. The festivities started with the traditional assembly and the announcement of the queen. That evening at the football game, during halftime, the floats and the court were presented to the entire student body and the queen was officially crowned by Mr. Perrin. Then to top off the beautiful evening, the Rams pulled through with our first Victory of the season over West Catholic. The score was a magical 23-13. Victory was celebrated the following night at the annual Homecoming Dance which was held at Northeast Junior High. This year ' s theme was COULD IT BE MAGIC . It sure was! The class of 1 976 presented their Senior play One Flew Over the Cuckoo ' s Nest on November 21 and 22. The play dealt with an institution for the insane and the true-to-life characters in it. The story revolved around McMurphy (Dave Nelson) who was out to reform the patients to the ways of real men. The only obstacle in McMurphy ' s way was the head nurse (Ingrida Kornets). The men finally realized that nurse Ratchett isn ' t exactly the sweet mother image they once thought. To make life more exciting, McMurphy brings in some of his old friends to entertain the guys. The play came to a dramatic ending as Chief Bromden puts McMurphy out of his misery by suffocating him. The play was directed by Mr. Garbowitz with the help of Sally Kingsnorth and Bob Roelofs. Jack Gibson and Paul Kelly worked on the sets and Janet Ashley along with Kathy McConnauohey worked as the prompters. Everyone involved in the play put a great deal of time and effort into the production of it. Anyone who saw it would have to agree it was a fantastic production. 104 r McMurphy looks a bit pail. All in all, the dance was a big success and everyone seemed to have a great time. 113 €=€Um V . The highlight of the season was when Ruth Emaus set a new city league diving record, with a point total of 252.05. Ruth was awarded the Most Valuable Diver award. Yvonne Schaap was the high point getter in the 50 yd. and 100 yd. freestyle and was awarded the Most Valuable Swimmer Award. These students come from study halls or are simply on released time. Selections are made on the basis of the individual student ' s attitudes, reliability and willingness to learn. Because of the many services offered by the I.M.C, there are many corresponding duties to be done: filing books, checking out materials, cleaning up, filing magazines, helping students and teachers, cutting out newspaper articles for the Vertical File, delivering AV materials and machinery, filing Vocational File materials, reading shelves to make sure the books are in correct order, and taking the lists of students down to study hall. Of course, there are other jobs which are only done once or twice a year. As can be seen, with this many tasks, the library staff could never manage all of them by themselves. While the requirements are demanding and the work hard, the rewards are equally as great. The library staff is extremely appreciative of all the help given by the media aides. For some, their last here at Central. The memories this year has left us with will be remembered with a warm feeling inside for a long time. As editor, I would like to thank everyone on the 1 975-76 Helios staff for their hard work and dedication towards making this book a keeper for the memories of this special year. Also, I would like to thank Mr. Barkema for his help and guidance throughout the year. I guess there aren ' t any words to express the gratitude felt for the people, faculty and students, who made all of these beautiful memories possible. The best of luck to next year ' s staff.
