Activities of the past and plans for the future are geared to the passing of time. Knowledge, wisdom, and experience are products of time well spent. As the hands of the clock move ceaselessly onward, the new becomes old as newer things appearg new faces and personalities replace those of yesterday. This annual, through its representa- tionsx of time, seeks to capture, for your enjoy- ment, a few choice moments of our lives' happiest days and hours. HE f if 'Q 4 N'-mv--my .Nl 5 by ns-, !l', if 'Wx To Mr. Samuel R. Upton, our counsellor-friend, we dedicate the Helios Annual of 1957. Throughout his 28 years of service to Centra1's students, he has faithfully and conscientiously fulfilled the duties of a principal and maintained the qualities of a friend. For his patience and understanding of students, his cooperation and interest in their activities, and his guidance and counsel in their problems, Mr. Upton is more than worthy of our praise. Mr. Upton's service to Central High School began in 1918. He entered Central as a teacher of biology. During this time and until 1925, he also coached all forms of sports. After eleven years at Creston High School, Mr. Upton returned to Central in 1936 as principal. Since 1936 -for 28 years-he has served in this capacity. 1 5 4 4 ' +4 ' .a . O A. diff' UK w . Though I'l1 attempt to tell you of our students fair, As to what they will be and when and where, For in our class we have all kinds From Elvis to Einstein and middle-class minds - Some will grow geraniums, and some will be preachers, While others will be ditch-diggers or maybe teachers. So on with my story I shall proceed And try to tell of the lives they may lead. First of all, 'twill do no harm To mention Jim Moody plowing the farm. Then at a Marine Base on a tropic isle, We find Dee Newton with a happy smile. Then there's Dave Wissink, a Dennis the Menace, Who's commonly known' for his playing of tennisg And we can't forget Oole, so clean and neat, Now with a broom, he's sweeping the street. But going down the street in a sharp used car, ls Judy Brink on her way to shoot par. Rog Neason, to tardiness a slave, Will not be on time 'til due at the grave, And Fred Hoekstra, at landscaping an ace, Is now planting trees with unerring grace, And Larry Nelson, who used to feed his dogs, Has turned his attention 'to raising hogs. Then Rudite, the editor, so shy and sweet Is now printing racing forms, three on a sheet, While at the circus with never a frown, Is our man Seitz calling everyone clown. Benita Cuncins, who's great at ballet, Is striving to be known on the great Broadway, And Daniel Groce, who takes after his pop, Will be cutting hair in the barber shop. Yet Jesse Dulaney for those A's still gunning ls remembered well for his, cross country running. 1 Ken Killman, remembered for his mischievous pranks, Is now playing third base for the New York Yanks, Aracgsiack Wickering, who was at swinuning a Learned his lessons from a great guy named Splash. Meanwile our friend Pete, so mild and meek, Is found in a college studying ancient Greek. Bill Knight, whose ideas seemed a little queer, Has turned out to be a fine engineer. Then at the bike races, winning them all, Is a flash on two wheels, Hugo Stahl. Looking into space among the stars, We see Fred Webster returning to Mars. Away from Silavs you should keep far, Or you'll end up buying a shot used car. Fritz Franz with his aversion to schoolroom benches Is chasing tanks and living in trenches. When in the future, if you think you've eye trouble, Make sure it's not the Pickens twins when you're seeing double. ' Any of you who will be a small town resident Will find Janet Moore, a lady bank president. 'I'hen in the Olympics, trying to beat the clock, Is Central's contribution, Mary Murdoch. A boy who always goes into a trance Is Mike Olree when he does a Charleston dance. To maize an accomplishment and to attempt to exce , We all realize that we must do each little thing well, So seriously, then, we'll all do our best To be a success and withstand time's hard test, And to our benefactors, both great and small, Whom we now leave behind in Central's halls, We owe a great deal of gratitude and thanks And hope for the forgiveness of our childish pranks. To lltlliss Meyering, Mr. Upton, Mr. Ludwick and 3 , Our sincerest thanks are really too small. Best wishes to classes of future years For the enjoyment, laughter, heartache, and tears Which come with t.he fulfillment of our high school careers. -Orval Van Ryn Kenneth Clare Susan Blanchard QR O I ' I 5 0 O 1-Milf Student activities constitute an important part of our education. Debate Our first major contention is . . . Members of the debate team say that next to sports activities, debating is the most exciting, educational, and highly competitive activity in which students may take part. The object of study in the debate class is to teach students to think clearly, to teach evaluation of facts, and the weighing of evidence, and to develop ability to speak effectively. After they had learned techni- ques of debate, and gathered sufficient information concerning the farm problem fthis year's topicj, the debators put this knowledge to work and went on to place second in the city league, tying with South. In state-league competition, five out of eight decisions were awarded to Central's team. Since they had qualified through both city and state leagues, the debators went to Jackson where they participated in the state eliminations, win- ning the first debate but losing the second. C.
