Bill Upton Lorraine Decker Life in provincial England in the earliest part of the nineteenth century is a far cry from our modern times, so it was a unique experience for the memhers of the cast of the Senior play to appear in this setting. lvloreover, the play was a dramatization of a novel that has delighted generations of readers, .lane Austen's classic, Pride and Prejudice. Miss Austen understood human nature so well that she was ahle to create characters that still seem real today. lt is the manners and customs of her time that seem strange to us, but they give the play its quaint charm. The director, the east, and the production committees all worked to get this effect across to the audience and succeeded admirably. Under the expert direction of Miss Dorothy Sonke the cast all gave fine performances. Mrs. Litscher of the art department supervised the making of the lovely sets, and stunning properties were obtained. Everyone cooperated to make a huge success of this ambitious undertaking. I CLASS POEMS Another Chance? We face a shattered world Of pain and gloom and death. We face a darkened chasm. It takes courage to go on When We do not know Where to go. Will it be as it has been before? Will the beacon light of home appear? Shall we welcome a tiny ray, A speck, a gleam, a hope? Will dim shadows begin to form from utter darkness? Will gray appear? then white? Then for an instant-rose, Then constant white+Peace, And the chance to build our world again? Colleen Bourne - 42 .. Sharing We tread the open road, The world before us wide and new, We gaze into the lacquered depths of sea and sky, Our dreams are birds, blackftipped against the sun. For dreams are not material stuff That we may grasp, and weigh, and measure l An ounce of truth, an ounce of hope, Small starbits of reality .... The world awaits the man who gives A little of his dreaming, A portion of his heart to him Who has no dreams. If to us the world is good, let us repay, For there are many who will need Our dreams, our hopes, And Heaven's blessing rests On him who shares. Jean Gillespie Unpredictable We stand upon the springfboard of life. Do we leap of our own accord, or are we being pushed? We look into the tumultuous sea of living, We do not know what lies beneath its surface. But our eyes are not blinded By the glare on the face of the water. We have no illusions about the depth Of this unpredictable sea, It may go down and down. There are gales to drive us off the course, Often we may find that we have drifted backword- We are young and strong. The breeze is fresh. It calls us and we know that we must answer. The experienced have taught us how to swim- Have we the moral strength To use that knowledge well? Lois Boshoven O CL ASS MOTTO Success is gained not given. CLASS COLORS Blue and Silver CLASS FLOWER White Rose - 43 - CLASS SONG To the tune of lVIarching Along Together Farewell to Central High School We'll try to make our dreams come true Looking into the future Memories we have of youg s In all our hearts there's sadness, As from our friends we partg We've done our best to gain success And courage fills each heart, The gold and white we will uphold And strive to do our part. Farewell to Central High School The class of 40 now goes forth, Farewell to Central High School lt's a shattered world we face, And in the great rebuilding We mean somewhere to find our place. This year's Helios Board, which consisted of five student members, together with the faculty advisers, published a magazine new to Central High School. Realizing that a change was necessary in the type of publication, the Board, after consideration of a vote indicative of the desires of the entire student body, issued a literaryfpictorial maga:ine. This magazine was made up of stories and poems, events and comment, school news, and many pictures. It is evident that such a publication has been successful, since the subscriptions, compared to those of the last few years, were tripled, Due to the great expense of the literaryfpictorial Helios, and to other activities, which the Helios Board has had to manage, only three magazines were published: one in November, one in December, and one in March. The Helios Board also were hosts in April at the Annual Banquet held at Central for the eight schools that are members of the InterfHigh Press Guild. -70- EditorfinfChief Assistant . The squad memhers, in the order of their speaking appearance, were David Ewing, Rohert Dangl, and Gordon Booger. The question they dehated was: Resolved, that the federal government should own and operate the railroads. After defeating four teams, including the state championship runnerfup of last year, the Central trio advanced into the eliminations in Fehruary. By virtue of xvins over Lee, Rockford, Muskegon, Big Rapids, Petoskey, and Comstock, Central, for the first time in its history, arrived at the state forensic finals. The team then took the negative against Flint Northern High School, and after a grueling hour and a half' hefore a crowd of 4,000 in the Hill Auditorium at Ann Arhor, was given the Zfl decision of the judges. The Student Council has had a successful year. Perhaps its most important accomplishment has been the introduction of the Honor Point System, hased on extrafcurricular activities. Part of this plan is the awarding of gold keys to seniors earning the highest nurnher of points during the time they are in senior high school. Other activities of the Student Council have been the sponsoring of several outstanding assemhlies, a noonfhour recreation period of dancing, pingfpong, shufflehoard, hadminton, and volley hall, and the maintenance of an efficient Courtesy Squad. This year the Student Council has tried to he as nearly as possihle selffsupporting. lt has held several sales and one afterfschool movie, These enterprises were successful, hut after other expenses had heen taken care of, the Student Council found itself unahle to purchase a school flag as it had hoped to do: so what remains in the treasury at the end of the year is to he turned over to next year's Council to start a fund for the purchase of a flag. Last fall they took us on a trip to the Swan Creek Wildlife Sanctuary where the officer in charge told us of the wild life on the reserve. The Club has participated in many sales throughout the year, including the distribution of Wildlife Stamps, Members of the Club wish to express their gratitude for the leadership and cooperative thoughtfulness of their capable sponsor, Miss Whittemore. -35- The Art Club is composed of students who have completed two or more semesters of Senior High Art. In order to be chosen, a girl must have earned her letter, have a B average in her studies, and show qualities of leadership. With such high membership qualifi- cations, we aim to encourage scholarship and to uphold athletics. To fulfil this, each year two cups are given, the Junior Agona Cup to the girl in the ninth grade who has earned her athletic award and has a high scholastic average, and the TrifHonor Cup, which is presented to a Senior girl who has been highest in athletics, scholarship, and leadership. Coming up from the City Championship second team of last year were lrlawkins, Lillie, Cole, Richards, Krengeleweski, Rahn, Hon' dorp, Elsen, Kecgstra, Safie, and Bender. Lillie and McNamara were elected cofcaptains. This was the setfup for 1939, Central opened the season against Godwin under the lights on their Division Avenue Field. Central showed great power in hlocking, fine team spirit, and in line teamwork, especially in a passing comhination of Afendoulis to Richards. The game ended with a 1343 victory for the Hilltoppers with Brooks, Straight, and Richards providing the punch in the hacklield. Cassis, Lillie, lvlarcusse, IVlcNamar.i played well on the line. Central opened its city schedule with Creston which ended Ill a WU FOOTBALL Ed McNamarn Coverston tie. Both teams played solid defensive foothall hut neither were ahle to get across the last white marker. As the iirst quarter ended it was evif dent that the game was going to he a punting duel hetween Straight of Central and Bailey from Creston. Straight kept the hoys from Central out of a great deal of trouhle and proved himself one of the hest punters in the city. The following week South took the measure of a fighting Central eleven hy a I0 to 7 margin, Only in the final period was South ahle to win hy means of a place kick. Afendoulis and Brooks continually hamf mered away at the South line and hoth were exceptionally outstanding throughout the game, Of the linemen, Mztrctisse, McNamara, Hendrick' son, and Stormzand played great defensive hall. lt appeared that Central hecame a little fed up with playing only average foothall and so on Friday night, October 20, Central walloped a lighting Tech team in the final minutes of the game. Mr. Waters took stock of the abilities of his squad and developed the style of play that best suited his materialg a powerful line, several hard lincfsmashing tackles, good tackling and blocking, and an excepf tional punter. The team Hnished the season with a record of only one defeat, and that to the city champions. Bolstcring up the line were Lipner and Marinus at guard, Tuenis at Center, Sikors and Aussicker at tackle and end. Crawford, Karel, Pruitt, and Gorski are credited for the ball handling. Mr. Waters will look to these boys as valuable additions to the first team. The team has voted a great deal of their success to Mr. Irwin and Central's increased school spirit. -104- , I 1 The 19394940 season proved to be a favorable one in many respects for the second team. At the beginning of the year especially, the boys showed winning form. The team started the season by losing a nip and tuck encounter to Christian by one point. A little later, however, Central snowed under Tech, Catholic, and Creston with a barrage of baskets, winning by a creditable margin in each game. ln so doing they demonstrated an excellent type of basketball, and the season came to a close with six wins and six defeats. In the last couple of games the reserves were hindered by the loss of one of their reguf lars, Dick Gillett, who was promoted to the first team for the remainder of the season. How' ever, the team made a Hne showing for itself even though losing a few games. The reserve team under Mr. Waiters developed some players who should supply Mr. Irwin with some line material to work with in the coming season. Shank and Lindeman showed scoring ability, whereas Carrigan and Clapp displayed skill in handling the ball and in all around play. The team also had line reserve material in Stuart, Dykhuizen, and others. These boys certainly should provide the foundation for an excellent 1940-1941 team. As November first rolled around and the team began to take shape we find such stars as Howard Phillips, Richard Geer, and Richard Straight ref turning from last year. Also on the team were Floyd Barber, David Mc' lvlahon, Donald Bender, Bud Karel, Joe Cassis, Wailter Brooks, Ted Nicolette, and Homer Adrianse. Central dropped the first game of the season to the fast Traverse City squad, which later won the state Class B tournament at Lansing, on the Northernefs home court. The fireworks started the following week when Christian, last year's city champions and this year's prefseason favorites, invaded the Central gym. The boys from Central, performing before a jamfpackcd house, outfshot and completely outfplayed the veterans from Christian to win 2120, Geer and Phillips led the scoring for Central, while Straight, Barber, and Cassis also did well for the Centralites. In the next week, Central dropped a close game to Creston with Phillips taking the scoring honor with ten points, Brooks too played a fine game as did Mclvlahon and Bender. The Hilltoppers felt very severely the absence of Geer, who was laid up with a sprained ankle. After the Christmas vacation Central showed great ability in hard playing, straight shooting, and all around fine basketball as they knocked over team after team to land only a few points out of first place. Central began by taking a real storyfbook finish from the fighting Tech team. Barber was the hero as he brought in the winning points Hnward Phillips Coach Irwin and team Don Bender .Ice Cassis with less than live seconds to play. The next week Central smothered Catholic Central 40720. The shooting ability of Phillips, Ccer, Brooks, Straight, and Cassis was too much for Catholic Central. Central won a real thriller before a huge crowd at Ottawa Hills as Straight Zipped the ball through the mesh in the last tive seconds of the game to win 1347, Central won the majority of the remaining games of the season. We defeated Ottawa twice in this season, after not having won a single game from them in the past ten years. Central was the only basketball team in Grand Rapids to win a first round game in the regional tournament. In this tournament Central defeated Creston and lost a close second round game to Muskegon Heights. All the members of the squad were presented runnerfup medals by the State Association following the Muskegon game. Toward the end of the season, Coach Irwin called up Richard Gillett from the second team, who played excellent basketball the remainder of the year and from whom Coach Irwin expects a great deal next year. Also Dick Straight began hitting the basket the last few games, scoring 30 points in two games. Central, as already mentioned, ended up in second place and the sea' son may rightfully be called a successful one. Phillips and Geer were named on the all-city team and Phillips, Gillette and Geer were given honorable mention on the allfstate team. Much of the credit of Central's fine season goes to Coach Irwin, whose fine understanding of both boys and basketball produced a hrstfrate team. Seven lettermen returned to form the basis of the 1940 track squad. One of them, Bill Upton, elected captain, ranked high among the hurdlers of the city. Une of the city's hest polefvaulters was back in the person of Don Keegstra. We also had Dave McMahon who showed up very well in the sprints last year and proved to he one of our mainstays in this year's squad. The shotfput was taken care of by Dick Straight, letterman of last year. Ed Hawkins, running mate to Bill Upton, proved to he a great help in winning points. Bud Karel and Don Lindeman, both juniors, will he the only three lettermen in 4l track season, Karel, in the polefvault, broad jump, and high jump was one of our hest lieldfevent men. He is one hoy who can do two things at once. When he isn't pitching hasehall games, he is out for track. Lindie is also a fieldfevent man. The remainder of the team was huilt mostly from men who saw service last year, hut who failed to win letters. Dick Gillette and Fred Royce fNew Yorkj were throwing mates in the shotfput with Dick Straight. Joe Hogan who came here from Mt. Pleasant has helped out greatly in the dashes and relays, Lloyd Vander Werf has shown a very creditahle piece of running in the half mile. The following boys have helped out during the season: G. Clarer, J. Goldammer, R. Kranjoluski, and Joe Nicola. As is always true the session room track meet turned up some very helpful and promising material. just such a person is Ted Walker, a junior, who turned out to he one of the hest if not the hest miler in the city. Other prospective letter winners for next year are K. Ward, D. Bender, and J. McDonald. The senior session room 104 won the session room track meet for the first time since it originated six years ago. -108- L - ul D AX lit On the first day of April coach Rip Matthews issued the first call for hasehall men. A group of fifty men reported ready for action. Returning from the 39 team were Barher, Carrigan, Nichols, Brooks, McGee and Van Stee. Thus our present team was formed around these men. New men, who filled the gaps made vacant hecause of last year's graduation, were Tuttle, Hamment, Karel and Fredrick. McGee and Karel were the outstanding pitchers on the team and Van Stee the only receiver. Our team for next season will he hit hard hy the june exodus. However, there are capable replacements in Gazzalla, Cassis, Benson, Safie, Maloley and Crawford, while McGee and Karel will again return to the diamond with experience, First Row: Frodricks, Marinus, Barber 4Capt.b. The opening of the tennis season found Howard Phillips, Dick Gecr, Homer Adrianse, and Dick Evans back from last year's City and Regional tennis matches. With these players as a nucleus, and the addition of R. Young, S. Shank, R. Thoits, and J. johnson, it is not strange the team not only won first place in the city race, but also won the city regionals. --llD- The Golf Squad of 19441 has been the largest that Central has had in years. Of those making up the squad lviarkotf and Hoover were four year men, Ewing and Bullock three Year men, while for the rest of the boys this was the lirst year of competition. Of the newcomers, Bob Mattescvn was by far the most outstanding player. He picked up the game quickly, practiced religiously, and had an important part to play in making the 1940 season a milestone in golfing circles for the Hilltoppers. The golfing ability of a good share of the squad members was about the same, hence there was a continuous battle among the team members to retain their positions. This intense spirit of interfsquad rivalry undoubtedly accounted for the unusually good golf displayed by the team, since it stimulated them to constant practice and hard work. At the time of this writing the city goliing schedule is complete with the Central Linesmen winning every team match that it has played. This makes them the city champions for 1940. The boys are now getting ready for the Regional Tournament to be held at Green Ridge Country Club and also the State Tournament to be held at Kalamazoo. This was the last year of competition for Hoover, Matteson and Markoff. The reliable Ewing and Bullock will be back for another season, and it is expected that the newcomers will develop themselves sufficiently so that Central should have another good team next year.
