The trundling Hat-cars follow placidly And at the end, the rattling way-car rides, lurching drunkenly, content to follow Shining engines glide along far-narrowed tracks. A firm, sure touch, a smooth caress - And, heeding the command, they mount the hill proudly. Smug coaches roll on quiet well-oiled wheels, content to follow, Though mishaps sometimes block the way. All seek to reach the station, At the close of every day. MARGARET HOEBEKE fnunafzial Beaulfq Sometimes, I sense a certain beauty - Too deep to be unearthed, Too high to be expressed, By anything so lowly as mere words or actions, It goes higher than the joyous lark that whirls heavenward in its Hight to the sun It lies far deeper than any human probe can ever really reach. This beauty brings a joy into my heart, So radiant, so dazzling, That my eyes are blinded by tears - Blinded, lest this feeling become so overpowering That earth grow too heavy for further lifeg Softened by tears that help to take away the pain Of beauty so intense, A beauty so strong that petty troubles and earthly cares Become as nothing - A beauty that cannot be perceived in its full glory By you or me - A beauty come of God, not made for mortals, Though diffused rays of light may penetrate the fog Surrounding us, A beauty of before and after, but not of now. Sometimes I sense a certain beauty, A beauty come of God, but not for man. Youth itself is bound by hills, climb we must. As God's masterpiece is man we would carry on his plan Today's labor ends, tomorrow's now begins. CHORUS: Today's knowledge is tomorrow's servant. Today intent upon today observant Tomorrow to the field - Tomorrow glean the grain And make life more abundant, through sunshine and through rain. Courage stirs today and beckons us to grow Seeds of good and seeds of truth we can sow. And with sense of humor strong, greet life with a merry song For 'tis through these blessings that we richly live. efwzz, sw amz. We stop, bewildered, pause to look Upon a world of strife. We gaze with eagerness - and fear, We are so new to life! We hesitate, we wonder - as We try to find our way. We fear those things we cannot see, And yet we cannot stay, We step into a world of hate That fear has rooted deep. Can we dig out these tangled roots? What shall we find to keep? Can we discover what it is That tears a world apart? And can we feel our way into The other fellow's heart? Knowing that Democracy i Can win out in the end. This year it has reached a high point in its ever increasing membership. The Staff has accomplished many new things, such as acquiring a page of pictures, and student interviews in the monthly Helios. The meetings are held weekly to discuss and select material. At Christmas time the Literary Staff enjoyed themselves at a party, and plans are now made for another. Valuable experience in the groundwork of the Helios is obtained in this organization, and the future of the school publication rests upon the excellent work and interest of the members. The junior Literary Stan' was very fortunate this year in having as hne and spirited a Senior Adviser as Phyllis Craig. The loyal cooperation of the faculty adviser, Miss Lich, is greatly appreciated. UNDERCLASSMEN BUSY AS a one-armed paperhanger are some of our folks, with all these clubs to join. dun .vm 1 Q3 .Jleliafi 14 Eaaful THE HELIOS BOARD is the controlling agency for the periodical magazine and the Annual. The Board this year was composed of five students and five faculty members. The greatest change in the Helios was the publishing of only five issues, Hallowe'en, Thanksgiving, Christmas, March, and May. These issues were the same size as last year, but many new features were added, such as student interviews with pictures, science and music columns, etc. Many improvements were made in the Annual, while the best features of last year's book were retained. Monthly subscriptions sales dropped this year, but with a fine advertising and sales campaign the Annual made up for this. l Again in 1939 advertising in the Annual was prohibited as a source of income. However, by close figuring and hard work a suitable budget was worked out resulting in one of the highest quality annuals a Central senior class has ever been proud of having. ACTIVITIES ayefiuf' ancfrq Siaffi SINCE THE HELIOS is traditionally a literary magazine, this department has a very important duty with each issue. The various English teachers cooperate by handing in the material written by the studentsg the staff members, members of the Pen and Pencil Club, and any other students interested in writing, contribute. This year student interviews by Marian De Vries with snapshots by David Conger were a feature. The junior Literary Staff under the guidance of Phyllis Craig had its own Tadpole section in each of the five issues. The typing staff also did good work for this department. The Literary Editor, Quentin R. Verdier, was assisted by Evelyn Kline and jean Gillespie, juniors. Through the efforts of David Conger, the Advertising Manager, a new organization of this staff was accomplished, and an ingenious new file card system was installed. This year this greatly enlarged staff averaged at least twenty-five per cent more advertising copy per issue than that of the better staffs in the last few years. Also, the quality of the ads seemed to improve. A fine organization in this department has been trained in ground work for next year's staff. The annual was subscribed for by 800 students. High sellers were Patricia Idema, Margaret Kuchmann, Richard Markoff, Richard Gillette, Lila Ahlen, jane Ackerman, and Tredway Haglund. Aileen Fuller has been the circulation manager, her assistant, Richard Markoff. The Business Staff has charge of the financial matters of the publication, including the collection of all bills contracted by advertising in the magazine. Also this year the Business Staff had charge of the taking and distributing of the individual undergraduate pictures for the annual. This department has been under the direction of William Bennett, Business Manager, and his assistant, Nancy Palmer. The staff consisted of Martha Stiles, Betty McCormick, Cynthia Murry, Sally Grinell, William McConnell and Kenneth Hewitt. ACTIVITIES .fbelale 7ecun DURING THE YEAR of 1938-1939 the debating team, composed of William Bennett, Paul Lawrence, and Robert Dangl, with Miss Dorothy Sonke as coach, enjoyed a most successful season. The team won the first debate of the season, defeating Creston, with Professor Raymond Shoberg of junior College as critic judge. The next debate, however, brought a split decision defeat in the hands of Lansing Central at Lansing. Spurred by this defeat, Central traveled to Benton Harbor to defeat Benton Harbor High School, following this by a unanimous decision over Middleville, thus winning a wall plaque for the school, and gaining entrance in the elimination series in the final struggle for the State Championship. Drawing a bye in the first round, Central went on to successively defeat Lansing Eastern, Ottawa Hills, and then reached the high point of the season by winning a unanimous decision from Big Rapids, last year's State Champions. The team lost only in the quarter-finals to Flint Central, who finally won the State Championship. No little credit is due the second team, David Waer, jack Geyer, and Max Pearse, who were rated in student decisions to have done the best debating of any of over thirty teams entered in the first debate tourna- ment in Holland. Senicvz. Gad! THE CLASS OF 1939 chose Phillip Barrie's modern comedy, Spring Dance, for their senior play. This light, happy story of eastern college life was remarkably suited to the class talent, and each member of the cast turned in a fine performance. New sets and truly luxurious properties were Obtained, making this The outstanding senior play in all of Central's history. Its huge success was due in a large measure to the persistent efforts of the able director, Miss Dorothy Sonke. The cooperation of the cast and all those connected with the production combined with the expert coaching of Miss Sonke to make this year's class play exceptionally fine. - After the two performances the cast enjoyed a spread at the home of Mable Luton, and a lively party at Miss Sonke's was the coveted reward for a job well done. ACTIVITIES Seniaa 0 THE VARIOUS COMMITTEES composing the executive staff of the senior play handled the technical and business details remarkably well. The Council has benented a great deal under the guidance of Mr. Decker, the faculty adviser, and we wish to express our appreciation for his interest in helping to solve many of our school problems. Through the efforts of the Courtesy Squad System during the past two semesters, the school discipline has improved considerably. Most of the assemblies, including the Pep Assemblies in the fall, have been spon- sored by the Council, and Exchange Assemblies with various schools have been conducted. One of our greatest achievements has been the forming of a Student Council Constitution. As a whole, Central's Council has had an outstanding year. The purpose of this club is to promote athletics in the school, to encourage a high scholastic standing among athletes, and to engender the highest type of sportsmanship in athletic contests. During the past year the varsity club has promoted many worthwhile activities. Track awards for the Session Rooms' meet were furnished from the proceeds of paddle-pop sales at the basketball games and from after-school moving picture entertainments. The club is very much indebted to Mr. Waters, Mr. Irwin, and Mr. Matthews, the three sponsors, for the fine cooperation they have rendered. The formal initiation has been conducted at special assemblies at the conclusion of each sport. Frequent meetings have been held throughout the year to carry on business that may come up. Membership is by tryout on the recommendation of the public speaking teacher, the participation in two school stage productions, or by the vote of the club because of outstanding work in dramatics. Though the club began the year with only six members, it has been very successful in carrying out its purpose. In December the annual Vodvil was sponsored by Sock and Buskin and was received by the school as one of the best in recent years. From the proceeds the club bought various stage equipment, including a new set of stairs and a fireplace. It also made donations to other school organizations. Another major activity of the club was the taking charge of the exchange assemblies for the student council. The assembly, made up of a play, dance routines, a little comedy, and several musical numbers, was sent to Muskegon, South, and Union Highs. A nne response was given it everywhere. The club has two meetings a month, one a business meeting at school and the other a spread at some member's home. At these spread mcetings skits are given by various members. The main project of the year was to secure robes. Besides being helped by last year's choir, through gen- erous donations, projects, and individual aid, we were able to purchase stunning new vestments. The boys fought hard, played well, and thrilled the early-bird game-goers again and again. With a strong line to clear the way, and fast backs to carry the ball, they were able to march down the field undefeated during the entire season. The same strong line that swept the second team to victory this year is going to pull the first team along next year, for Mr. Wate-rs' first team boys will find, among others, two good backs, a pair of guards, an end, and a center, all fighting for their jobs. This will H11 up the gaps left by the graduating seniors and boost the morale of the team by creating a struggle for first-string positions. Among the most outstanding players are Barber, McMahon, Stone, Lillie, and Brooks. Slmiulvi l pl-In ll.n.niv lXlui 7 Wauvn-i 51 Q1 1 I 'Track UNDER THE HANDICAP of cold weather lasting well into the middle of the track season and the consequent loss of the session room track meet, Coach Waters managed to have seven of his small squad quality for the state meet, held annually at Lansing. We missed Fred Quigley's combined speed and excellent form over the hurdles this season, but found an excellent replacement in Bill Calkins. So far he has piled up in City competi- tion an enviable total of some 60 odd points. Bill Upton had the misfortune of running against such competition in each meet. However he managed consistently to run a good second place. He also gained points in the broad jump. Following close behind Calkins' line record comes Russell jones, who after gathering many first in the 880 run was changed to the 440. He easily gathered two more firsts in that event, one of the firsts being in the City Regional meet. The Straight brothers, we found, also excelled in track. Tom gathered points in both the high jump and pole vault, and Dick, although being out for baseball, won many points for us in the shot put and broad jump. The Regional meet proved we had the best pole vaulter in the form of Don Keegstra. Don won the event while still nursing a badly sprained knee. Another who showed up well in the pole vault was Lindeman. He has many years of high school competition ahead of him. The two star discoveries of the year were Roger Reed in the 880 and Jim Wycoff in the 440. Reed was urged out to practice after the season was well under way and with his natural running form pulled a second place in City-wide competition. Ed Hawkins and Dave McMann are sure point winners for next track season, the latter being eligibile this season for the state meet. ATHLETICS Banda!! COACH RIP MATTHEWS started out this season with only two regulars returning, Captain Stevens and Mule Maloley, With quite a large turnout to work with, the very able coach was building for next year as some of the material was rather green. The team developed as it went along. The pitching staff included Harpo McGee, a sophomore, john Van Dam, a senior, and Captain Stevens, a junior. Booker and Van Stee did the receiving. There will be quite a few regulars back next year- Carrigan, Afentuldis, Brooks, McGee, Nichols, and some reserves, while Booker, Van Dam, De Groot, Curtis, Maloley, and Assaley are leaving. One group of players which can't be left out is the Codgers, composed of the subs. The Codgers battled the regulars in the scrub games. There was also a freshman team coached by Dale Bearss. We hope that next year will be a very successful one for the team. This year as before was handicapped by poor transportation facilities to and from Mary Waters field. x ' . '7emua CENTRAL STARTED out this year with four lettermen back. Philips, Wagner, Burr, and Bennett and with them as a nucleus Ralph Conger determined to build a team that would force Ottawa out of the championship place which she has held for several years. Philips, Burr and Pierce played singles in that order while Wagner and Bennett played number 1 doubles and Geer and Adrianse number 2. There isn't much else to tell except that Central won the city championship in dual matches and then went on to clean up in the Regionals with Wagner and Bennett winning the finals of the doubles and Geer and Adrianse being runners-up. The third doubles team that was required for the Regionals was comprised of Beel and Evans. Winning the city Regionals gives Central the privilege of sending a full team, two singles and two doubles, to the state tournament at Ann Arbor on june 2 and 3. Central has had every reason to be proud of this year's tennis team which brought a new trophy to Central's show cases, putting us once more on top of the list in this sport. So good luck down at Ann Arbor, boys! ATHLETICS 004 AT COACH MARTIN DECKER'S call this spring, twelve divot diggers presented themselves as material for this year's team. At the qualifying round at Kent Country Club four men qualified for regular positions on the team and three remained as alternates. Markoif, Hoover, Ewing, and Bullock played the regular positions respectively and Kaboose, Boslooper, and Schwan qualified as alternates. Entering the inter-high school matches the team greatly appreciated and enjoyed playing on Grand Rapids' finest courses, Highlands, Cascade, Ridgemoor, Gracewil, Kent, Blythelield, and Green Ridge. The four positions on the team were selected each week on the basis of scores in the previous matches. In this way each man sooner or later played practically every position in the course of the season. The entire team will be back to represent Central next year and much is expected of these up and coming golfers. The team wishes to express its thanks for the fine support and cooperation of its coach, Mr. Decker. q.,4.,4.,4' IT IS AN annual custom of the Senior, Junior, and Sophomore girls who are interested in athletics to meet every Monday night and compete in various sports, such as hockey, basketball, volleyball, and baseball. The Seniors finished with top honors in every sport except basketball, the Sophomores winning this tournament. This Monday night group is under the supervision of Miss Campbell. On Tuesday night, under the supervision of Miss Kilstrom, the junior High girls meet to compete in similar activities. Both of these groups indulge in individual sports, including ping-pong, badminton, shuffleboard, and archery. Three honors given at the end of each school year are a numeral, a letter, and an all-city honor, the highest award a girl may receive in athletic work. The purpose of the club, to further the spirit of good fellowship, sportsmanship and leadership, is the basis in determining the receivers of these awards. Appreciation for the extraordinary pains taken by our sponsors, Miss Campbell and Miss Kilstrom, is hereby acknowledged and our love expressed.
