Barrie. A Kiss for Cinderella was staged with huge success. Everyone in the cast turned in a ine performance. The success of the play was due in a large measure to the persistent efforts of the director, Miss Dorothy Sonke. The cooperation of the cast combined with the expert coaching of Miss Sonke made this one of the best plays ever produced at Central. Class Colors: Dubonnet and Gold CLASS MOTTO In Ourselves Our Future Lies O CLASS POEMS Q TO MY DIPLOMA One time you were my golden star, a light, The goal I sought, a beacon on a hill. You led me those Hrst days till I was quite Accustomed to the newness, led until I felt myself part of this wider world Of gaping rooms, backfturning stairs and halls. The months went by, the years unfurled Their banners, till today our future calls. But in ourselves our future lies. Today You are the bridge that leads us to our goal. Now I have grasped my star, it fades away, Yet burns again upon some higher knoll. Dorothy Dietsch FOR GOOD REMEMBRANCE We tread the steps, swing wide the heavy door, and meet a hum of friendly greetings. A sudden thought - We leave all this! The insistent bell, the lively chatter, the buzz of classes passing, low voices in small rooms, timid hope or dull misgiving, moment of suspense, papers, elation, or deep despair, that helpless feeling when fingers of the mind grope for the answer, and parted lips, blank stare, or downcast eyes betray the sputtering candle of knowledge, the din of discussion, too, and the solemn quiet of intensive study, the heat of competition, and the warm comfort of a thing well done late afternoon restlessness, straining ears, and then the bell, no longer arrogant and shrill . . . freedom. We tread descending steps. The door swings to, The lock clicks. A lingering thought - Within is silence, silence and a ghost of laughter echoing in long dim halls. Elizabeth Porter 443 CLASS SUNG C Tune : Anvil Chorus Forward and upward with head high and step Erm We march to the goal of our heart's desire. New paths unfold now and beckon us onward to heights That our youthful hopes would acquire. With knowledge we've gained and with character strong May we reap of the fruits that our school has sown, Intellect, leadership, honor, and faith be our guides In the years that remain unknown. Farewell, then, Central, we leave thy dear portals With memories cherished of comrades true, Words fail and eyes dim as parting approaches, To friends and to teachers we bid adieu. CHORUS: 4 Loyal to you, dear Central, we will be foreverg Proudly we'll bear the banner of our Alma Mater. Mighty fortress of our youth, thy praise and glory we'll sing forever The class of '38, Ruth Wilson and Tonny Larson 44 SENIOR PLAY CUMMITTEES One of the most important cogs in the machinery of play production is the executive staff. This year the staff was unusually effective. Each of the various com' mittees should be congratulated for its splendid service. However, the stage crew deserves special recognition for its hard work and wonderful cooperation. Because this staff was so efficient, the play, A Kiss for Cinderella, was a grand success. This fourth year of the Junior Literary Staff has proven most successful. The member' ship has increased greatly. Meetings were held once a week to read, discuss, and select material for the Helios. 'This year special emphasis has been placed on obtain' ing material from each of the English Classes to make our Tadpole section in the Helios more democratic and more representative of the entire junior High School. The Board this year was enlarged by the addition of an art adviser. The greatest change in the Helios was the putting out of a quarterly magazine instead of a monthly. These issues were increased in size, and several new features were added. Many changes also were made in this year's Annual, of which the most important are individual pictures of the faculty, and all underclassmeng also, page arrangements are entirely different. Again in 1938 the annual staff was prohibited the use of advertising as a source of income. However, by determination and hard work a suitable budget was formed, allowing a thoroughly successful as well as attractive yearfbook. Twice a year, under the direction of a secret faculty committee, members of the National Honor Society are elected. They are chosen from the upper fourth of the graduating class on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Fifteen per cent of the graduating class may be elected. The meetings are not held regularly, but at the president's call. It is the custom of the Society to have an annual dinner for the active and graduate members at the end of the year. Among other activities are the erection of the illuminated wreath over the front entrance at Christmas and the sponsorship of the Lost and Found Department. These activities are carried on under the direction of a faculty council conf sisting of Miss M. R. Powers, Miss Alicent Holt, Miss Florence Powers, Miss Nellie M. Hayes, Mr. A. Many benefits have been derived from the discussion of school problems by the representatives in both Junior and Senior Councils and the representatives in the lnterfHigh Council. These groups owe a debt of gratitude to the new faculty adviser, Mr. Decker, for his helpful advice and guidance. During the past two semesters, a new and improved monitor system was formed. This is the Courtesy Squad System. It has proved very effective and has insured discipline throughout the year. Suggestion boxes were stationed at various places in the school to assure helpful advice from students themselves. Pep assemblies and other assemblies were arranged by members appointed by the council. It was def cided to exchange assemblies with different schools in the city, a decision which proved very favorable to the students. Altogether, the Student Council has had a most profitable year. The Classical Club, Sigma Chi, is composed of students in their third and fourth year of Latin, who have maintained an average of C or above. The purpose of this organization is to further the interest of Latin customs and language, and to encourage scholarship. Each year an award of five dollars is given to the student having the highest average in iirstfyear Latin and the Eta Sigma Phi medal is given for the highest record of fourthfyear Latin. As a service to the school, the club, each semester, sponsors a usedfbook sale, and this year gave some books dealing with Roman life to the high school library. In addition to the monthly meet- ings, a dinner was held at which Mr. Jack Verdier gave a very interesting talk, and a meeting, open to all Latin classes, was held in April when Mr. Robert Merrill gave an illustrated lecture with slides of Italian life. The club wishes to thank the sponsors, Miss Mary R. Powers and Miss Alicent Holt, for their encouragement and help. In order to be eligible, a student must have received a B average in the year of algebra and the year of geometry that he has taken, and must either have taken or be taking some form of higher mathematics. To encourage seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students to strive for higher interest in mathematics, the club offers an annual award of ive dollars to the student having the highest average in this subject. This award is presented at the Honor Assembly each June. The club wishes to express its sincere appreciation and gratitude to its sponsor, Miss Dora W. In order to become a member, one must have had public speak' ing and have been chosen on the recommendation of the public speaking instructor for tryfout or have shown outstanding work along production lines of at least two school presentations. Two meetings are held each month, one being a business meeting at school, and the other a supper meeting held at the home of one of the members. For several years the club has sponsored the Vodvil and used the proceeds to buy equipment or to support various school activities. This year the club presented to the school a new stage set, purchased with the Vodvil money. Plans are made for the presentation of a play in an exchange assembly with Union High School. We have established the custom of presenting, in memory of Mrs. Nistle, the Ethel K. Nistle Award to the senior who is outstanding in dramatic or public speak' ing work. Our activities vary from time to time. Sometimes we study conservation through books and newspaper, from which we learn the problems of other cities and states. Cften we engage a speaker from the Museum or the Kent County Conservation League, with whom we cooperated in promoting the Wild Life Show in March. The most interesting way we have of studying conservation and nature is by going on a hike in the woods where we learn many things. V The Club maintains a Bulletin Board on the third tloor on which Conservation news is posted. At each meeting, items from newspapers and magazines are col' lected from the members for this board, and for a Conservation Scrapfbook which the Club is keeping. Last year, it held its first annual exhibit in the club room. The members mounted pictures which they had made in the art classes, and created an effect which was quite attractive. They also brightened the lower halls with a few of their own pictures. This year, the club helped with the artistic and advertising part of the operetta. They found pleasure in creating gay designs on the hems of skirts and in designing and painting the lively scenery. For its own pleasure, the club has been to the Furniture Museum where Mr. Spencer lecturedg to an exhibit of the Art Gallery on sculpturing which Mr. Bach explained. The A Cappella Choir of Central High gained distinction this year in many ways. Not only were they an excellent singing group, but more than ever before did they grasp the true spirit of a Choir group. This was evidenced in their many splendid appearances. They presented an Operetta in February entitled Riding Down the Sky. This was well received by students and adults and repaid the members of the cast for the hours of strenuous work in its presentation. They sang in many assemblies, clubs and churches, and in every instance did good work. Their work and appearance at the City Musical Festival at South High was awarded a superior rating by everyone. Plans are under way to obtain new Choir Robes. The effect has been im' proved greatly this year by new Choir Accessories. The choir will lose many valuable members because of graduation and we certainly wish them well. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our director, Mr. Barr, for his planning, patience, and efforts in our behalf. May Central's Choir interest grow and the standards be kept high. - 88 R.0.T.C. As they sit and gloat over the brilliancy of their deeds upon the athletic Held, many more than fond memories arise and seem to once again take their place in the limelight of the sports parade. For instance, there is the convincing manner in which our varsity swept into the city football lead, held it down the stretch, and emerged city champions. The first tilt of the season was a decisive victory for the Goldfa11dfWhite Eleven, when Godwin High was vanquished by the comfortable margin of 32fO. Again Barrows and Rip' master, ably aided by Van Overloop's passfsnagging, proved to be the sparkfplugs. Beating Muskegon was an idea our team possessed the very next Saturday, and for two full quarters, the idea was an actuality, but two quick scores by the Muskies shattered our illusion of a victory. Ripmaster and Quigley were the Central sparkfplugs, while Barrows displayed a fine bit of play while his injury allowed it. Again Van Overloop demonstrated his pass' snatching ability, yet all these performances were not enough to match the breaks of the game. The following week, the Hill' toppers again returned to championship form and handed 98 Peter QQ as- Olson 3? Sikors Bilby Catholic Central a stunning 25f6 defeat. In this contest, Central did everything and did it well, with perhaps the blocking and running of Barrows and Ripmaster being the outstanding feaf tures. The whole team functioned perfectly behind a hard, smashing line that spelled victory from the opening gun. Then, with but two games remaining, the main obstacle ap' pearecl to be South, with whom we were in the running for championship honors. The South fracas was the bitterest con' test of the season. Vicious line play and spectacular passing at' tacks featured, with no letup until the final gun. Central domi' nated the play throughout the contest, yet could draw no better than a 616 tie as a result. In the season's finale, Central waged battle with Davis Tech, and when the smoke cleared, the scoreboard read, Home team, 18, Visitors, O. This victory cinched the city championship for Central. As in other games, Quigley, Rozema, and Pound played outstanding line games, while the whole Central backfield per' formed well. This game concluded a most successful season, one in which our varsity tasted the fruits of success, and received every benefit of the game of the gridiron. 99 Captain-elect Malnley K.. , N .. The moleskin luggers of our reserve squad put in a few lusty whacks during the past season, and though the squad worked from scratch they completed a most successful schedule. For the first time in years the reserves presented a team beyond the lightweight class. A heavy line composed of such big boys as Dick Straight, Ma Gee, Marcus, Rodgers, and Stormzand make well for next year's varsity, while the backfield, led by Afentuldis and DeGroot, took aback seat for no opponent. Among the season's highlights was the defeat of Tech's reserve aggregation to pull our seconds up into the first division, and thus we salute next year's varsity from whom Coach Waters can expect a great deal after their fundamental training from Reserve Coach Irwin, who has pointed these lads to a future of stardom. 100 fr, I A l' I' I, u I ' ra, f, fl 'X' J 3 W If y ft, V lj 4 N uf' l ,fvfv -J . x f, f. 4 .' 1 f 'W K 1 ll :fl M. . Needless to say, a majority of games were won, as the squad wound up in first position in the city league. The main features of the team were consistency, a fighting spirit, and smooth teamwork. The greatest improvement was sh-own during the second semester of play, when the squad took six consecutive victories over city opponents. Boys who showed possibilities were Geer, D. Straight, Cassis, Barber, and Keller. This squad produced a machineflike team that showed best when the odds were against them, and consequently deserve all the credit for their great support of athletics at Central. In the next couple of years, we may see a lot of Messrs. Straight, Geer, Keller, etc. Let your hopes run high, for they will Ssfis be fulfilled by these men, our future varsity. il 1 iw, r 4, Mi N xg U I Q17 J' ' l Y 11, .T fri 5?-F261-Q :J ,.. The results were very embarrassing to the varsity, for in spite of Barrow's and Pound's efforts, the alumni carried too many heavy guns in recent graduates who still possessed more than a faint idea of how the game is played. The next week the varsity received another setback at the hands of Holland. The Centralites played a good brand of basketball, yet just could' n't cope with the taller, faster aggregaf tion, paced by Center Van Dort. just a Week later we struck pay territory against a team that later held a jinx over us, as we defeated South High's Trojans in a game rampant with thrills and roughfhouse tactics, by the score BAS YW if ,,Q,,,,,,JW,f!NwJ 2::,f: ffLM LJ., ami g,m. vi .f ' 1 lf Q. In spite of the lack of returning lettermen the Central cinder pounders pref sented a surprising balance in all events. Dual meets proved a success, in as much as few of them were lost. The strength of the squad proved our four returning lettermen, Vanderhoning, Quigley, Jones, and Vandermolen. They participated in the 440, hurdles, 880, and dashes, respectively, and all took in besides, some field event. While in these men our main strength lay, others such as Lipscomb in the 440, Morgenstern in the dashes, Upton in the hurdles, Wilcox in the mile and Milliron at the middle distances contributed highly in running events, while Stuart, Hamlin, Tom and Dick Straight, and the relay teams were instrumental to our sucf cess in field events and the newly introduced relays. Our baton jugglers gave the squad a winning edge that many times meant meet victories. Congratulations go to these men of the cinderpath who have developed potentialities into actualities. 104 X X x QS BASEBALL The Hilltop varsity baseball nine, in its second year as a major unit, is proving a great success. The turnout was unusually high, and there were seven returning lettermen from last year to bolster the squad for the season. The team proved to be an upfandfdown one, having good days, and occasional bad ones. The infield, com' posed of Captain Gogo behind the plate, DeYoung at irst base, Babcock' at sec' ond, Van Overloop at shortstop, and Johnson at third base, turned in a line oiiensive game while also showing improvement in stopping the pellet. The outfield also packed a punch offensively, yet lacked polish on defense. The pitching staff included Biggs, senior hurlerg Miller, junior, and Bearss, sophomore flingers. Bearss, on the basis of games won and lost, seems to hold the number one flinger's position and looks like a strong comer. Capt. Gogo was the sparkplug of the outfit, while Johnny Johnson drew the role of umpire rider. The ily in the ointment concern' ing the diamond game was lack of practice time, as the 'field was a distance from school, yet Coach Matthews has done a great deal toward the advancement of base' ball at Central. Y bq - . Mt Ni Central's tennis team of 1938 had as a s, four letter men from last year's team. Wagner played singles, while Bennett, Hillman, and Burr were doubles players. In dual competition, the team has proved a very creditable one with Phillips, Wagner, and Burr playing singles in that order, and Hillman and Bennett in the No. 1 doubles position and Idema and Wierengo playing No. 2. The team so far this season hasn't lost a dual match and is certain to land in iirst or second place. The Regional, which comes after the city dual matches, will flnd Central in a similar one or two position. Substitutes from whom the additional doubles team for the Regional will be chosen consist of Lee, Geyer, Evans, Beel, Kammert, and Pierce. Only two players will be lost from the present squad for next year, and chances for a stronger team next year are excellent. Central has had every reason to be proud of its tennis teams in the past and this year's team is no exception. 106 GOLF TEAM Fifteen prospective mashiefwielders dug up the greensward at both Gracewil Lawns and Highlands Country Club in answer to Coach Decker's call for golfers to represent the Hilltoppers on the links. Of the Hfteen initial turffdiggers the six who performed the best were chosen to make up the team. Cf these, two were alternates. The interfhigh school matches, arranged in conjunction with the regular schedule, were played on both private and municipal courses, these being Highlands, Cascade, Kent, Blytheiield, Green Ridge, Gracewil, and Ridgemoor. This was a real treat and the boys appreciated the opportunity of being able to play their matches on the best courses Grand Rapids has to offer. Throughout the season each player had to give of his best to retain his position on the team. The number one, two, three, and four men for each match were selected on the basis of their performance during the previous year. The alternates also played at the same time with the regular team but their scores, of course, were not counted as being ofiicial. However, if the score of an alternate was better than that of a regular for any one match, he was then chosen to replace the slipping veteran for the next match. Anyone else desirous of gaining a position on the team had to first challenge and subdue an alternate and hence work his way up. The entire team will remain intact for next year, except Robert Waer, who has been lost through graduation.. iffy fdfif.. This year, besides the joint boys' and girls' meet which was held March 25, the G.A.A. sponsored a number of sales. These sales were given to raise money for the new gym equipment which made this semester's individual sports program possible. We are deeply indebted to our sponsors, Miss Campbell and Miss Kilstrom, for their fine cooperation.
