HUGH ScHoFF Laugh, and the world laughs with you. I CLASS MOTTO Todayk preparation governs tomorrofwlv progress CLASS POEM The past has no reality for us. The wigged gentlemen of the Revolution, The wandering trappers and the frontierswomen, The forerunners of our world, Have no meaning save the trace they leave In the tumult of today. Here from sea to sea is a great nation, The deep, dense forest cleared, the fields plowed, Cities towering skyward made of steel and tinsel, Supremacy in the whole world established By millions of hands faded into the past. But in each living thing is another's labor, The ultimate completion of a bygone dream, Or the telltale fingerprints of a hand that failed. Life is a paradox of hope and fear, We have seen the fields golden with heat and rye, Yet people starve in tearfilled rooms, Factories stand idle, dust covers looms, Yet men and women shiver in threadbare rags. We cannot be sure of tomorrow Who have known a youth so restless, In a nation so unpromising Of food and shelter And our heart's security. But today there is a whisper in the factories' smoke Of returned prosperityg Shall we catch the nation on its upward swing- Hold it to the stars with our own untried strength? Then those who follow after may rise from the darkness Toward the light we have pursued - A beacon to the march of youth, To the nation's forward course, And the progress of the world! - ELIZABETH MERRICK 37 Row Ibm Run Rum CLASS SONG 1937 Elizabeth Bennet Jack Bender H J v ,I '7 ' rj- ,7 Dc?'1iP'fH7 frvm th?-e dared MJ? ,The 411055425 in be f-gre Have Jiri J J ,H-if N 4 i J 7 5 . 7 2 F 4- 1, ,I HT J, J -.I 4 p . . Creston felt the sting of an effective passing combination and became Central's Hrst city victim. VVith but half a minute of play remaining in the first half, Ripmaster threw a long pass from midfield to Anderson who grabbed the pigskin and scored the only touchdown of the game. Rip was the indispensable cog on attack, plunging and throwing accurate passes all evening. liy the time the Muskegon game rolled around, the team was reaching its peak. The lVIuskies, who went on to win the state championship, were scheduled to annihilate the Hilltoppers. Our boys spent most of the afternoon on the Big Red's goal line, but never did they succeed in crossing it. Central completely outclassed and outfought the bigger Muskies, but couldn't take advantage of scoring opportunities. The two Mtiskegon touchdowns were achieved only as the result of lucky breaks. Ripmaster gave the Muskies a terrific headache, but whenever their goal line was threatened, they seemed able to stop him. The Gold and VVhite gave the state champs their toughest Rqgema Quigley Idema Hold that line game of the campaign. The line played their best game of the season in this contest. Idema, Quigley, Hudson, Lillie, and Anderson contributed greatly to the victory. Central ended the season in glori- ous fashion hy completely humbling the Indians from Ottawa Hills. The line opened large holes for the hacks to speed through and the only time the Indians threatened, the alert Central forwards repulsed them. Hastie, substituting for Hakken, Rosema, Pound, and Hudson were the mainstays on the line, while Rip and Barrows led the hacks. Though Centralls 1036 team didn't win any championship, it did uphold the Central tradition of good sportsmanship. After two overtime periods at Catholic, the Parochials dumped in a long one to edge out our quintet, 21-23. ln the regionals Central drew Creston. After a nip and tuck fray all the way, the northenders pulled away at the closing whistle to cop a 2l-l9 win. This game was played on the spacious Burton floor. 'lihe l9.i6-'37 team ended in a tie for fifth plaee in the city loop. However, with just a few more haskets in many of their games, they could have finished much higher. ln the honor selections at the end of the year, four of our hoys were men- tioned. Barrows was the only one who made all-city. King, Charon, and Delioer all received honorahle mention. 92 TTBCIC I ii C fi K s 1. 1-.- ... Even with the smaller squad this year, Coach Steele can be relied upon to send a capable squad into city competition. Many of the men who came through in the city and state meets last spring have graduated. Keegstra, who captured the state crown in the high jump event and also ran the hurdles, will of course be the most sorely missed. Nine lettermen are returning to form the basis of the 1937 squad. One of them is Bob Anderson, who ranks high among the sprinters and jumpers of the city. Une of the city's best half-milers is back in the person of Louis Charon. Russ Ogren and Bob lVIacKercher are returning in the 880 and 440 respectively. The high jump will be taken care of by Barrows, Dorman, and Anderson. Barrows and Anderson consistently reach the twenty-foot mark in the broad jump. Janes and Lampkin will garner additional points in the dashes and Kimball should be one of the city's ace vaulters. In addition to these veterans, Coach Steele has Quigley, VanderMolen, Vanderlloning, and Ripmaster to count on for points. This year's squad will be a well-balanced outfit with some experienced men in practically every event. The session room track meet, an event which was introduced into Grand Rapids track circles by Mr. Steele, will undoubtedly uncover some promising material. New relays have been added this year to the program of the high school track meets. These new races will add much color to the meets as the relays are almost always packed with thrills. To win a major in track this year, a boy must win eight points in regular meets or place in the city or state meets. Yes, Central has an excellent chance for the city title this year. 93 Girls' eet Managers Iwu 1 Mum 4.ul4l:mnm-r, lznwlllln- Illllnnux, .lun-fi Qlzmrh, lul-:umr I'--vhl. lhnmtlxy Ul41'i--ln, lhin-I I-'v'n'lw1'p, H:um:1l: l,1-lw-nxdxy, Mrxriu S4-xllu. After the expenditure of much time and effort for two or three years, the boys in the high schools of Grand Rapids have succeeded in establishing baseball as a major sport in the athletic curriculum. However, this will not be the first year Central has been represented by a baseball team. During the past two years, baseball has been conducted on an informal basis here at Central. Mr. Matthews, a former minor league player, has again volunteered his services as coach. It was under the guiding hand of Rip', that baseball got its start at Central. Though still lacking in equipment, the team will be out there scraping just a bit harder this spring. Prospects for a successful campaign this spring are quite bright, for several boys of last yearls squad are returning. Among them are pitchers Les Biggs and Jim lbiiller, catchers Gogo and Race, and outfielders Art Simmons and Van0verloop. The returning infielders are Bixby, Ybema, Hansen and Delioer. Coach Matthews will have plenty of other material from which to pick the regular nine. It looks like a big year for high school baseball in Grand Rapids. 95 W S77 TMJ 5, I .Q-' -1445 iWf bl- ' 1 Sr 1 L L Q w .4 -f ' Q ,W wiirf ? qi 65 ..,, yggv 'R aa Hx f'+ 4 v 1 I 4 pal W K' gf, gil H lillw- K n A ns . -2 3 3 ,A 3 3 was if! 4 8 vs .Q 12 X ' , , , W yy' ,Q .Q .sg Q, 4 v 'f' ' -4 lin 21' ' t , y M 1 Qs-xi J?
