Zin illllemntiam BURTON E SMITH The principal business of the teacher rs not to impart knowledge but to tram the student to search for it with as little asslst ance from the teacher as possible This was the ideal of Burton E Smrth who for more than thirty years served with high efficiency rn the physics department of Central Hrgh School He came here in 1895 two years after his graduation from Ypsrlantr He orrg mally instructed in astronomy physics and algebra but with the growth of the school the science of physics soon claimed his entrre time For the new Central High School built in 1911 Mr Smith planned the physrcs lecture room and laboratory and superrntended the selection of equip ment making the ads antages offered therein second to none in the state Hundreds of men and women held him in high esteem both as an instructor and also as counselor and friend Certatnly his was a successful life viewed in its broadest sense and hrs in fluence will long be felt on the lives of the students with whom he came in contact Calm courteous self possessed never un duly elated or depressed with always 1 pleasant greeting for ex eryone he enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all who knew him F S CAROLINE LOUISE ELLIOTT Caroline Louise Elliott was born in Grand Rapids and was graduated from Central High School in 1888 Her interests as a student and an un usual understanding of young people led her gradually into teaching which she drd tt first with individual students or as a substitute At a military academy in Corn wall on the Hudson she took from the Cuban boys in her classes her first lessons in Spanish which she afterward taught so successfully Not having had technical training in her profession she seized upon every opportunity for further study which presented itself spending short periods at different universities taking correspond ence courses and always studying by her self With fine ideals of character and scholarship she inspired her pupils to endeaxor to meet the high standards she set for them Her interest in her students went outsrde the class room Many a boy owed hrs place upon a Central team to her encouragement and watchfulness She kept in touch with her pupils long after their school days were over and those of us who knew her as a teacher would express our respect and affection as did one of the ninth grade boys who sand I feel that I li rx e lost a friend Tu enty on .
