A nnual Helios Boys' Athletics It was with quite a shock that the students of Central learned that Sam Upton was going to leave the field of athletics for that of the teacher. A better, Finer, more hard working coach has never lived and fought with Central. Poor material under his hand has been built into fighting units that were feared by every other high school team in the state, Central has been proud of her athletic teams not be- cause of the games they have won but because of what Sammy has made them. The years that he has coached the Gold and XVhite have been successful. Best wishes and good luck, Sam! Foot Ball XYith only a few veterans back Sammy de- veloped one of the fastest. pluckiest. gamest teams in the state of Michigan. One great obstacle loomed ahead of it, inexperience. Be- cause of this and the team's lightness, the sea- son was a hfty-fifty proposition, that is four games won and four games lost. Sam and his team wallowed in the mud and the cold and wet in order to uphold Central's reputation. The scores were as follows: Nineleen Twenty-Three not from the viewpoint of the number of games won, but from the way the team fought. VVith but a few veterans back Sam developed a team that was known by all and feared by all. The 'ole' Central spirit had its gripping effect on both the team and the student body. lf the same spirit will always prevail in the future there is no doubt that a Central team will always fight. As a result of Sam's resignation the past season will be the last one in which he will be Central's football coach, and with its close may the best of luck be always with him. BILL LEE. Basketball As in the football games the games won by Central in basketball have been conspicuous by their absence generally. Out of a total of ll games played four were won and seven lost. Marlett's touchdown after a mem- orable run through the Union line, or that time when Union get the ball from Matheson by inches only and thus saved the day for them, will long be remembered by every Cen- tralite who saw those games. Every member of the team deserves unlimited praise for his part in the season. The real mettle of the team was put to test in the game with Detroit Northern at Detroit, There, with only a few supporters on the sidelines. on a strange field. Northern was held to 18 points while we garnered in l-in lt is generally thought that if the game had continued longer Northern would have been beaten. Then in that last game on Turkey day with Muskegon. the Muskies, considered one of the best teams in the state, were held to 5 points and came pret- ty close to losing the game several times. Practically every member of the team was laid up at one time or another during the sea- son. Marlett suffered an injured hip in the Northern game which kept him out of all ex- cept the last two games of the season. Thorn- quist was carried off the held when he hit the Union line too hard. Cappy Buys became almost a wreck and had to retire. All of which shows that the games were not as much a failure as a pessimist would think on viewing the scores. just remember this: In every game the team succeeded in scoring against the opposing side and then consider who came out second best this year. The past season can be considered a success, On the whole, however, the team did not lose because it lay down on the job: the season of '23 seemed to develop an abnormal lot of ex- ceptionally strong teams all over the state. Although both the scores were close yet the manner in which the team played was enough to satisfy the most particular fan. lloth games were hair raising affairs but with Central ahead most of the time. However, from the appearance of the scores it seems that we must have had a jinx of some sort. But jinx or not the school has followed them in their victories and defeats with considerable pride, It is a well known fact that a team may give its best in a game and yet be de- feated, and looking at the matter from this basis, the season has not been a failure at all, Success in athletics is not measured in games won and lest. Of course the aim of all those who take part in athletics is to win and occupy the highest position. Central's team in the past season was not successful in games won. but in spirit and morale it has attained the highest success. Athletics should build a fellow physically, but, above all they should teach one to play the game fairly and squarely and to be a good winner and a goc The fellows who played on the last team coached by Sam Upton have these things under him.
