COPYRIGHT THE EDI TOR THE MANAGER THE ARTIST J. F. WOMACK WALTER CARTER DORIS HARRIS 1836 - = • In this celebrated year of 1936 , a year in which every¬ one is commemorating Texas in her one hundred years of progress , many of us will be celebrating our graduation from high school. Some of us will say farewell to school forever , but we shall always have with us the memories of the pleasure and happiness that we have had here at Sam Houston. This book is com¬ piled for the purpose of rep¬ resenting every phase of high school life. The staff sincerely hopes that it may be a source of enjoyment and pleasure in later life as an everlasting me¬ mento of our high school days. In the minds and hearts of the students of Sam Houston High School, he stands for steadfast integrity, for unswerving justice, for high-minded loyalty. With clarity of vision, with constant purpose, with intellectual discernment, he has guided us through our high school years. To our principal, W. J. Moyes, we gratefully dedicate the Cosmos of 1936. 1836 am Suustun JMtglj P!. 21- (iWogee, |3vtnrtpal Houston, ' (Ilcxas ,3ln bibbing farefuell to tlje (Elass of 193G, mao 31 on behalf of tlje faculty express to you our sincere apprecia¬ tion of all ttjat you t|abe bone to npljolb tlje l|onor anb trabitious of Jiattt Houston? ,31t t|as been a pteasure anb a pribilege to fuork futtlj you anb for you- ©nr congratu¬ lations aitb best bnsljes go fuitlj you- JVs you go fort!) to face tire problems of tlje fixture anb to take your places in tlje ranks of tl|ose foljo must figljt tl|e battles tljat must be fcugljt to insure a better anb bop- pier luorlb, may you Ijabe tl|e courage of your conbictions anb tl|e bull to serbe- ay you be loyal, faitljfnl, anb true, Rearing not tlje siren boice of pleasure but only tlje stern call of jRuty- ( :No better abbice can 31 gibe you tljau tljat of olb Polonius to l]is son: fHljis abobe all: 31o tljine obm self be true, JVnb it follolus as tlje nigl|t tlje bay, fUbou canst not be false to ann man.’’ JlfU- 3J- oues- BOOK I. It was a wooden structure which stood where the Rice Hotel now stands. The capital was moved to T Houston, December 15, 1836 and remained there until W 1839, when the Congress of Texas ordered its removal 0 to Waterloo, Texas, now Austin. Duggan, who learned his football from Knute Rockne, has always managed to win the respect of his players and to receive their cooperation in every way. He always puts good sportsmanship and the boys’ safety before the winning of games. As a result they get something out of football that will benefit them in life long after the scores are forgotten. Last season, with only four lettermen back, Duggan built a team that was always a threat to its oppo¬ nents. Line Coach Harold Mickelson, former all-conference guard from Rice Institute, has been very successful in his first year at Sam Houston. Anyone who can work his players as hard as Hal did and still remain as popular with them as he has done, must have a real personality, but Mike has it. In one year he has become one of the best liked members of the faculty. Co-captain Hal Weidemeyer had every qualification to be the leader of the team. The fact that he was one of the few men who were placed on every all¬ city team speaks for his ability. But Hal’s strongest point was his undying spirit. He was always the best hustler on the field and never quit fighting, regardless of the score. At the end of the season, he was selected unanimously by his team¬ mates as the most popular player on the squad. Co-captain Kermit Beahan was respected more by opposing players and coaches than any other player on the team. Kermit was in the middle of every play, and few gains were made over his tackle position. Although he was handi¬ capped by injuries during most of the city games, he was considered by many to be the best tackle in the district. Beverly “Curley” Hart Guard “Curley’s” steady play and fighting spirit made him a val¬ uable man to the team. He gave opposing ball carriers plenty of trouble. Edward “Brains” Carnes Center Ed’s value to the team was not appreciated until he was kept on the bench by injuries. He already has two football letters and has another year of eligibility. Henry “Wasp” Winn Guard When Henry could keep his feet on the ground, he was as good a guard as there was in the city. James “Wimpy” Wells Guard Jimmie completed a quartet of guards that gave the Tigers some of the best guard play in the city. Billy “Imp” Heard Tackle What Billy lacked in years he made up in weight. He is being counted on to come through in a big way next year. George “Bed” Holms Guard “Bed” was in the middle of every play—in the middle of the line, and his playing was as brilliant as the color of his hair. 1836 1936 Douglas “Grasshopper ' ’ Forbes, End Doug was one of the few sophomores ever to break into the starting line-up. Before he graduates, he should remind fans of his brother, Bobby. Charles “Lily” Bichards Tackle Charles played every posi¬ tion in the line except guard and played them well. He pulled the team out of a bad hole with his centering while Carnes was injured. Joe “Abba Jabba”, Wellborn End played prateffealfy aTl of fe time and seldom made a mistake. He could always be depended upon to carry out his assignment. Bill “Dick” Powell End Bill was one of the most de¬ pendable ends on the team. His ability to catch passes made him a valuable man to have around. Joe “Heel” Butera Fullback Although he was out most of the season with a shoulder injury, Joe came back to play well in the last few games. It was his first year in high school football. J. 0. “Oscar” McPherson Halfback J. 0., football’s gift to the girls, was the team’s second all-city player. His excellent kicking, passing, running, and defensive work made him one of the city’s most versatile backs. William “Flash” Ursprung Halfback William was one of the best ball carriers on the team. His fleet feet saved the Davis game with a spectacular sixty-yard run. John “Slug” Breaker Halfback Although John received this nickname through an un¬ fortunate mistake, he was known to everyone concerned as one of the most nearly per¬ fect gentlemen and hardest players on the team. W. J. “Dub” Geiselman Fullback After starting the season as a substitute, “Dub” soon broke into the starting line-up and starred in all the District games. He could always be counted on for a few needed yards through the line. Manager Although the doctor would not let him play, Corwin could not stay out of football, so he became the guardian of the equipment. 1836 F O O T 15 A L L S U M M ARY 1936 BRACKENRIDGE —On September 27, the Sam Houston Tigers traveled to San Antonio to open the season with a 6-6 tie with the Brackenridge Eagles. The Eagles made twelve (irsL downs to the Tigers’ four and gained plenty of ground in midfield, but the Tigers’ line held on the goal line. Sam Houston got its chance in the second quarter when Ed Carnes covered a blocked punt on the eight- yard line. Weidemeyer carried the ball to the one, and McPherson took it over from there, but failed to add the extra point. S. C. Grizzle was the Tigers’ best ground gainer, while Captain Hal Weidemeyer’s defensive work stood out. Ursprung, Tiger back, ran 60 yards for a touchdown, oidy to have it called back as the referee ruled that he had stepped out of bounds. NORTH DALLAS —The Tigers lost a hard-fought game October 12 to the North Dallas Bulldogs, 12-6, at the State Fair field. Sam Houston scored first when Hal Weidemeyer turned in a spectacular 100-yard run after intercepting a North Dallas pass in the second period. He was given good blocking on the play by Kermit Beahan, Tiger tackle. But in the last quarter, after several of Sam Houston’s backs had left the game with injuries, the Bulldogs pushed over two touchdowns, which won the game. The game proved costly to the Tigers as Weidemeyer received injuries that kept him out of the next two games. BEAUMONT —On the following week, the Tigers were held to a 0-0 tie by the Beaumont Iloyal Purples at the Royal Purple Stadium. The game was marked by numerous penalties at the expense of the Tigers, and by an unusual occurrence at Beaumont’s expense. With J. O. McPherson filling the air with pigskins, Sam Houston carried the ball to the five-yard line. But on the next play they were penalized fifteen yards for clipping and never threatened again. Beaumont lost a golden opportunity to score when a ball carrier, in a clear field, and only nine yards from the goal line, was accidentally knocked down by an official. CONROE —On October 25, the Sam Houston Tigers scored all the touchdowns they had not scored before and trounced the Conroe Tigers 52-0. The reserves played the entire first quarter and pushed over a touchdown before giving way to the first team. In the second period, Sam Houston had little trouble in scoring three times with S. C. Grizzle doing most of the ball toting. The second half was a repetition of the first, McPherson, Grizzle, and Breaker making two touchdowns each, and Ursprung, and Thomp¬ son, one each. JEFF DAVIS —The Tigers made their initial appearance in Houston, November 1, and scored a 12-6 victory over the Jeff Davis Panthers. Davis scored first in the second period after recovering a fumble and marching to a touchdown. Sam Houston tallied a little later in the same quarter when Weidemeyer took a short pass from McPherson and ran 70 yards through a broken field to score. The Tigers put the game on ice when Ursprung, Sam Houston halfback, intercepted a Davis pass and out¬ ran the Davis backfield to the goal line sixty yards away. The rest of the game was defensive on the part of Sam Houston, while Davis filled the air with passes, most of which were unsuccessful. SAN JACINTO —Sam Houston went into the game undefeated in the district but came out on the short end of a 27-13 score. With the aid of some completed passes, the Tigers held their own in the first half, which ended 13-13. Weidemeyer’s ability to catch passes kept them in the game up until this point. But in the second half, the Bears did some passing of their own and pushed over two touchdowns while holding the Tigers scoreless. Sam Houston’s stars were McPherson, who gained most of Sam Houston’s yardage on running plays, passed and played well on defensive, and Weidemeyer. MILBY —On November 15, Sam Houston sulfered its most bitter defeat of the season at the hands of the Milby Buffs. The score was only 7-0, but it was the first Milby victory over a city team since it entered the district. The Tigers led in first downs 12-9, but they could not gain near the goal line. The line was weakened by the loss of Beahan and Carnes, who were out with injuries, and could not hold up under the impulsive Milby attack. In the closing minutes of the game, the Tigers staged a drive with desperate passes, but lost the ball on their twenty-yard line. REAGAN —Sam Houston closed the season, November 22, with its worst defeat of the year at the hands of Reagan Bulldogs, 34-13. The Bulldogs didn’t lose any time in scoring and kept a large lead throughout the game. The highlight of the game was a 60-yard run made by Weidemeyer, Tiger back, after intercepting a Canine pass. The Reagan team had little trouble running through their lighter opponents and scored almost at will. First Row: Fred Henshaw, Hal Weidemeyer, Noel Smith, Douglas Bolster, Vernon Wilson. Duggan is as capable a basketball coach as he is a football coach. Sam Houston is the only high school in the city that lacks proper basket¬ ball facilities, and the boys consequently do not get to practice except during the regular season. Nevertheless, Duggan has always managed to put out teams that have been contenders for the title. This year, with only one letterman re¬ turning, the Tigers were favored to wind up in the cellar, but managed to give a commendable showing. While Duggan was working with the regulars, Assistant Coach Hal Mickelson had the less pleasant task of managing the scrubs. He was well liked by all his players and had little difficulty in securing their cooperation. He did so well with his charges that the B team won practically all of its games. Hal Weidemeyer captained the Bengals for the second year. He displayed the same spirit and playing ability on the court that he did on the gridiron. Although Hal was the shortest man on the team, he was one of the best defensive players in the city and was always assigned the opponent’s highest scorer. Only the fact that he became ineligible at mid-term kept him off the all-city team. Wallace “Five-Seconds” Ragan, Forward Wally started the season as a “sub” but developed into one of the team’s best sharp¬ shooters. Lawrence “Skello” Schutte Center Despite the fact that he was shorte r than most of the other centers, Lawrence seldom failed to give the Tigers the tipoff. Sterling “Weed” Vermillion, Forward Sterling didn’t take many shots, but when he did, he usually scored. He was a good passer and defensive man. Douglas ‘Machine Gun” Bolster, Guard Doug was tjie team’s lead¬ ing scorer and a. -gohd floor man. He ' was always dangerous under the meshes. Edward “Bunion” Carnes Manager Ed guarded the equipment so closely that when the season was over, there was actually a little of it left—a most unusual fact. Joe “Abba Jabba” Wellborn Guard Joe had less trouble playing good basketball than he did talking. He always came thru he was needed most. 1836 BASKETBALL SUMMARY 1936 DAVIS —The inexperienced Tigers opened the season, January 8, at the San Jacinto gym and took a licking at the hands of Jeff Davis Panthers. Doug Bolster, Sam Houston forward, led the scorers with eleven points. The Panthers grabbed an early lead and were never threatened by their taller rivals. The final score was 32-19. MILBY —With a game under their belt, the Tigers hit their stride the follow¬ ing week and took the Milby Buffs into camp 23-18. Bolster again paced the scorers with eleven points, and Captain Weidemeyer starred by his floor work. The Bengals were greatly helped by the fact that Lawrence Schutte continually got the tip-off from his opponent, who was several inches taller. SAN JACINTO —On January 22, San Jacinto handed Sam Houston its worst defeat of the year. The Tigers managed to keep within striking distance through most of the first half, but in the last half, led by Young Bussey, the Bears ran off from the Tigers. When the final whistle blew, the score was 46-17. Bussey, of the Bears, took scoring honors, with 17 points, while Ragan scored 11 of his team’s 17 points. REAGAN —In the season ' s most exciting game, Sam Houston nosed out the Reagan Bulldogs, January 24, in the Reagan gym 27-25. The score was tied 25 all until Wallace Ragan, Tiger forward, sank a crip shot in the last five seconds of play for the winning play. Bolster was again high point man with 9 points, while Weidemeyer covered the floor well. DAVIS —Although they were nosed out by Davis in the following game, the Tigers looked good in bolding the boys who later went on to win the district title to a score of 24-21. Only the failure to sink free throws kept the Tigers from upsetting the dope. Ragan, of the Tigers, took high point honors with 10 points. SAN JACINTO —On February 1, the Tigers met the San Jacinto Bears and were again trounced by the South Enders. The Bears ' passing and Bussey ' s shooting proved too much for the Downtown boys, and as a result, when the final whistle blew, they were on the short end of a 41-17 score. Doug Bolster led the Tigers with 8 points. MILBY —Sam Houston chalked up its third and last win of the season, Febru¬ ary 7, in the Deadv gymnasium by beating the Milby Buffs in a hard-fought game. Handicapped by the loss of their captain, Hal Weidemeyer, through in¬ eligibility, the Tigers played one of their best games and came out with a 38-31 victory. Wood of the Buffs, with 17 points, and Bolster of the Tigers, with 12 points, led the scoring. REAGAN —February 13, in the Davis gym, the Reagan Bulldogs avenged their former defeat with a 27-20 victory over the hapless Centralites. Moers, canine forward, hit the meshes for 10 points to grab scoring honors, while Bolster again led the Tigers with 8 points. The defeat sent the Tigers into fourth position in the city race as the season ended. Horton Hagan McMahon Womack Coffey YELL LEADERS Yea Tigers! Yea Tigers! Fight! Fight! Fight! . . . how familiar those sounds and what memories those yells bring back of the exciting foot¬ ball games of the past year. While the boys oil the gridiron were fight¬ ing their battles, the yell leaders were having their struggles with the fans in the stands, urging them to cheer the Tigers on to victory. Earl Horton, chief yell leader, won many friends with his genial smile. He was very ably assisted by Malvin Coffey, yell leader for his second year, Wallace Ragan, and J. F. Womack. Charlotte McMahon, song leader, also won many friends with her pleasing personality and pep. The cheer leaders accompanied the football team to Beaumont and Conroe, and they were present at all of the home games. The cheer boosters should be given credit for staying in the thick of the game with the football team, cheering them in victory or in defeat. Through the untiring efforts of these students, the publication of the 1935-36 Aegis was accomplished in a most successful manner. Outstanding members of the staff were awarded the gold Aegis pins at the close of the term and were taken to the State Interscholastic League Meet in Austin, May 1, as representatives and guests of The Aegis. 1836 ...- 1936 THE CADET CORPS IN REVIEW Federal recognition of the Houston Reserve Officers’ Training Corps was gained in July, 1935, after years of effort on the part of the corps, its faculty, and notably, the Reserve Officers’ Association of Houston. Major Gene R. Mauger, then a captain in the Cavalry, was detailed as Professor of Military Science and Tactics to the new Houston Provisional Regiment of the Junior R.O.T.C. Although the corps was almost tripled in size, Major Mauger quickly completed its organization. The Sam Houston corps, under Lt. Paul Van Tuyl, became the First Battalion, having companies A, R, and C of the Regiment, as well as the First Rattalion Rand—two hundred and thirty cadets in all, more than all Houston had last year. Of these, only seventy-seven had had previous military training, and only one had been an officer. First Lieutenant Bailey Lewis became first the captain of Company A, then the major of the First Battalion, and finally the first Cadet Colonel of the Houston Provisional Regiment—a signal honor for Sam Houston. During the Majority of Bailey Lewis, the first competitive inspection was held by the R. M. G. T. Company A, under Captain Alan Buster, ranked first in the city, with 95 out of a 100 points. Company B, under Captain Eddie Young, tied for second with Company E of San Jacinto. When Major Lewis became the Colonel, Major DeWolf of San Jacinto was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. Alan Buster became the Major of the First Battalion, and Louis Girard the captain of Com¬ pany A. Lieutenant Jack Moncrief became a captain, second in command of the First Battalion. In spite of the difficulties of training brought about by the great number of new cadets and the re¬ organization, the corps made a fine showing in its excursion to Fort Sam Houston, Galveston, in Decem¬ ber. In the first inspection of the new corps for the War Department, the ranking gained was “satis¬ factory,” probably the best to be expected for the first year. The picture above was taken as Company A passed in review before Major General Preston and Cadet Colonel De Wolf at that inspection. No account of the new deal in the R.O.T.C. should neglect the cadet band. At Sam Houston, the band has increased to almost 30 members. Leo Caesar is the first captain of the First Battalion Band. Much credit is due the band and Mr. Spampinato for the progress they have made. BATTALION Evelyn Henson. Major Patsy Ruth Turrentine. Mascot Dorothy Banks. Captain Co. The purpose of the society is to promote literary and social intercourse in the manner of literary programs and social activities. On March 19, the society sponsored a book review, “North to the Orient, at the Y. W. C. A. Part of the proceeds from this review were used in purchasing books for the school library. On April 17, the society gave an invitational dance at the Junior League Building, honoring the senior lettermen in the three major sports. Some 225 persons were present. Keeping in line with the spirit of the Texas Centennial, the society presented the following literary programs during the school year. E L A PHIAN P R O G RAMS THE J. On that same day in the afternoon, another group of students gave “Pearls” at Foley Brothers’ “Town Hall,” for the members of the Parent-Teachers’Association and their friends. Those taking part were Lee Love, Betsy Ros s Bisphinghoff, Jane Darnaby, and Joe Jarrard. The sponsor, Mrs. Verna S. Hogan, directed both plays. Assisting the casts with their settings and property were Reuben Fine, Nayland Baxter, Jack Robert¬ son, Dodd Kirk, and Pullman Elizalde. Lee Love. Lillian Tomek. Jane Darnaby. Patsy Helton. Ch arles Kiefer The members of the Cosmos staff wish to offer a word of thanks to those who helped to make this book what it is. Without the aid and assistance of our sponsors, Miss Staggs and Miss Weinberg, this book could not have been compiled. We wish to thank Mrs. Woodruff, Mrs. Sandel, and Mr. Sherman for their suggestions and aid with the art work. Miss Duvernoy very ably furnished us with the official lists of the candidates for graduation. Mr. Snider graciously afforded us the use of the caps and gowns for the senior pictures. As usual Mr. Moyes, Mrs. MacDougal, Mr. Seawright, aided the staff in ways far too numerous to mention. The staff sincerely appreciates the time and effort these persons have given to the Cosmos work. The Editor , j. F. WOMACK B O o K F 0 U R TYPICAL HOUSTON HOME This old home is a fine example of the architecture of fifty or more years ago. Such homes were noted for their hospitality and the many gay halls and parties that were given in them. Here lived such distinguished Houston families as the Weems, the Botts, and the Carringtons. joun mmKm most Representative boy mmf sas s htss Mo si ' Representative Qirl wsz murpu Representing Sam Houston in the University of Houston Reception DOROTHY Dooam Mosl Deauliful Qinl joffifws STom Junior Favorite G01S CSS QURGTROU H Sophomore Favorite EDITOR’S NOTE Just a word as to how the favorites were chosen: The Most Representative Boy and the Most Repre¬ sentative Girl were elected by the senior class from a list of candidates nominated by the faculty. The basis for these nominations was leadership, character, scholar¬ ship, and sportsmanship. From a group of nominees suggested by the Senior Cabinet, a group of teachers followed by a committee of three judges, Mr. Win. A. McKenna, Sue Barnett, and Helen Byington, selected the University of Houston Reception Beauty. The School Beauty was chosen by Mr. Wm. A. Mc¬ Kenna, an authority on art, from pictures submitted by girls desiring to enter the contest. The Junior Favorite and Sophomore Favorite were elected by their respective classes from a list of nominees named by the faculty. The basis of these nominations was the same as for the senior class representatives. J. F. WOMACK DEDICATION To those of you who laugh a bit Or even crack a smile. We dedicate this section And hope it fits your style. So crack your shell and have a laugh It doesn ' t cost a cent. Especially when you try to be On pleasure fully bent. 1836 LEAKING THROUGH THE MOUTH 1936 It seems that Gladys Anderson and Joseph Pappas are doing all the good. They stuck it out a year anyway! We nominate for the Brains Society this year, President, Mary Sue Bates; Vice-President, Mary Ellis Bolling; Secretary, Margaret Bish¬ op; Treasurer, Louise Bendall; and Reporter, Natalie Bowers. A true honey with all that goes to make up a grand girl and swell sport is Mildred Dattner. Flash! Louise Youngblood had a real and honest date. (So she says) Goodie-Goodie for Dorothy Rich¬ ardson and Malvin Coffey and equal recognition to Iris Harper and Kermit Beaham. Thanks a Million to Lester Ka¬ minski, Lewis Crosson, and Edd Miller for the splendid representa¬ tion they gave in Debate. Winifred Lewis seems to be rushing Julie Kuykendall this year, but Julie’s heart-beat is elsewhere. Among Sam Houston’s best dancers are Leo Shannon, Gordon McDon¬ ald, Seymour Seidler, and Dub Williams. For girls we nominate Helen Evans, Gladys Robischeaux, Tookie Farrow, and Iris Harper. Margaret Rose Painter, Joyce Perkins, and Lillian McIntosh are three cuties that we predict will make the top. Johnnie Meyers and Vera Hansen are giving lessons to Richard Jeppe- SEN . . . No charges. Bessie Farrara and Jay Lunsford have finally patched up their old ro¬ mance . . . Mighty Fine! Visiting us from Heaven are four an¬ gels: Jane Ann Allerton, Arnelle Shudde, Norma Thacker, and Thais Harris. Although Evelyn Henson has had a considerable amount of competition this year, she has held her own with J. O. McPherson. Full of the true Jlogan Dramatics teachings are: Kirlicks Knolle, Jane Darnaby, Dorothy Pike, Rue- ben Fine, Pullman Cominerez, Lucille Lierman, and Joe Jarrard. Why must girls go steady? We ask this of Eileen M asiiek and LaVerne McCullum. No chances, boys. Among Sam Houston’s Institute of the Lovely are: Rosalie Sullivan, Hazel Jones, Flora Jackson. 1836 SOCIETY 1936 Whiz Bangs! What? Why the Black Battalion dances this year of course; the Football Frolic, the Valentine Whirl, the Vice-Versa, and last the Annual Battalion Formal held at the Country Club. A most successful season. Congratulations! One gala event of the season was the Elaphian cele¬ bration where the football boys went elite with a pro¬ gram dance and really enjoyed it. A series of teas, luncheons, bridges, dances, open houses, and other entertainments crowded the last two months of school. With such lovely hostesses as Margie Byron, Iris Harper, Grace Nichols, Katherine Russell, Mildred Dattner, Helen Pasternak, Katherine Smith, Jean Ray, Frances Garrett, Essie Lee Aiken, and Cap¬ tain Dorothy Bradshaw. It’s no wonder everyone was happy. Gab! Gab! Gab! The Debater s Banquet where no one but Lewis Crosson and Edd Miller could talk. No room for anyone else! Of course, we must mention the Etta Kett Banquet where President Charlotte McMahon, charming as ever, showed her taste in the planning of the gay affair. In all, you see, these grand times we’ve had are really unforgettable, and we hope, in years to come, that a glance at this page will remind you of your happy school days. jJT TEXAS HEROES SAM HOUSTON: I truly didn’t like the Mex.
