Tribute to Leroy Hughes By David Hollis Frazer The recent and untimely passing of one of our highly respected and deeply loved students of Sam Houston High School prompts and warrants this humble tribute. Leroy, as this noble young man was known to us, left behind him credit of his life as he had lived it within the short span of seventeen years. This alone should be consolation to us who are his friends, and to his nearer, dearer ones who mourn his loss. The sorrow with which our entire student body has met the staunch realization of his unexpected departure to the portals of death, bears testimony to the continued lingering of his spirit within our midst. His team mates, realizing Leroy’s ardent interest in the game of football, are doing their utmost to relive the spirit and “hard driving” that characterized the deceased, and his gallant leadership as he captained his team. Our earthly regret only increases as we recount that Leroy was taken at a time when observers would have least pre¬ dicted. He was physically an ideal specimen of youth and fast-developing manhood. Through careful guidance he had physically developed to be his teammates’ ideal. Leroy’s pass¬ ing has left with his associates the remembrance of a student who had the ambition of a climber, and the will to attain his ambition. We do not magnify the tragedy of his death; but no tragedy is so intense that some gleam of consolation cannot be sensed by the victims of the tragic gloom. Thus to remem¬ ber this line specimen of ambitious youth is to remember him with deep respect and admiration, which after all can be the greatest goal for which a human life can be lived, no matter if that life were seventeen years in span or three score years and ten. Thus, I pay Sam Houston High School’s tribute to Leroy and say, ‘‘As a student and athlete we can expect and find no better.” This tribute to his parents and to his memory, we pay.
