Advertising k l l l l ? £ f f k i Tribute to Leroy Hughes By David Hollis Frazer The recent and untimely passing of one of our highly respected and deeply loved students of Sam Houston High School prompts and warrants this humble tribute. Leroy, as this noble young man was known to us, left behind him credit of his life as he had lived it within the short span of seventeen years. This alone should be consolation to us who are his friends, and to his nearer, dearer ones who mourn his loss. The sorrow with which our entire student body has met the staunch realization of his unexpected departure to the portals of death, bears testimony to the continued lingering of his spirit within our midst. His team mates, realizing Leroy’s ardent interest in the game of football, are doing their utmost to relive the spirit and “hard driving” that characterized the deceased, and his gallant leadership as he captained his team. Our earthly regret only increases as we recount that Leroy was taken at a time when observers would have least pre¬ dicted. He was physically an ideal specimen of youth and fast-developing manhood. Through careful guidance he had physically developed to be his teammates’ ideal. Leroy’s pass¬ ing has left with his associates the remembrance of a student who had the ambition of a climber, and the will to attain his ambition. We do not magnify the tragedy of his death; but no tragedy is so intense that some gleam of consolation cannot be sensed by the victims of the tragic gloom. Thus to remem¬ ber this line specimen of ambitious youth is to remember him with deep respect and admiration, which after all can be the greatest goal for which a human life can be lived, no matter if that life were seventeen years in span or three score years and ten. Thus, I pay Sam Houston High School’s tribute to Leroy and say, ‘‘As a student and athlete we can expect and find no better.” This tribute to his parents and to his memory, we pay. Mr. E. E. Oberholtzer— Honored and respected, Mr. Oberholtzer is nationally known as an educator of vision and discernment. His pleasant and long standing associations with the schools of Houston have endeared him to us all. Mr. W. J. Moyes- This is small recognition indeed for a man so worthy as Mr. Moves, who has been not only a splendid principal to Sam Houston, but who has been also a valued friend and advisor to the student body and faculty. Vernon To Miss Verner Benton, through whose energy and efforts the Black Battalion has won a nationwide reputation as a drill unit, the staff dedicates this section of the Cosmos. To her, the students of Sam Houston High School express not only their deep appreciation of her splendid leadership, but also their sincere hope for her continued success. REQUIEM Taps for the Black Battalion. It will exist hereafter save as a thing of beauty may perpetuate itself in lasting inspiration. Inscribe, then, among its achievements that it triumphed gloriously over a host of adversities. Out of the sweltering heat of a pipe-filled boiler room, and out of a sun-baked, rain-drenched, ungraded drill court—too small for a rehearsal of the entire organization—came a Battalion of international prominence, reflecting honor upon its school and city. Imitations have appeared in Houston, in numerous other American cities and in foreign climes, but the Black Battalion has remained the only movement of its kind. Through its eight years the Black Battalion has been invested with a soul and with a hardy spirit to excel. It has sought to glorify young womanhood. It has held aloft the beauty of clean living, of healthy bodies and of pure minds. It has em¬ bodied a sense of personal pride, a charm and graciousness of manner, an efficiency in all undertaking, a love for the artistic and beautiful. A fractional mention of its honors should include: A picture in the hall of fame of the Sousa Post, V. of F. W., at Detroit with other outstanding drum corps; per¬ formances under Sousa’s baton, international radio broadcasts, theatre circuit engagements, a review before former Governor Ross Sterling and 10,000 spectators, a featured article in the world’s largest musical magazine. Paramount and Fox news reel features, and numerous performances on programs of national interest. The Battalion has served loyally for charity and civic causes. It has been self sus¬ taining and has made money each year to support other activities of its school. My gratitude goes to those who have encouraged me in founding and developing the Battalion. My love remains with those splendid girls who have marched under its colors. As for my sacrifices, labors and heartaches, I pass over them. Recom¬ pense enough for me will come in the hope that, although the Battalion dies, its soul will live on in the hearts of its veterans and friends. He was easily the class of the ends playing for the senior high schools as was demon¬ strated by the fact that he was named on the all-city team. He was a fearless tackier and blocker and was rarely taken out of plays that were directed around his end. This was Charlie’s last year on the Tiger team, and he will be sorely missed when the next football season rolls around. To Coach Duggan, the teachers and alumnae of Sam Houston owe their sincere thanks for guiding the destinies of fine football teams. Always a man who takes an ardent interest in the athlete he coaches, Mr. Duggan has made himself one who will be remembered by each of these young men, not only as their coach but also as their friend and advisor. While Coach Duggan is putting the Tiger team through their paces, Assistant Coach ’’Saco” Hudgings is usually devoting his time to teaching the fundamentals of football to the ”B” team—first year men and others who show T talent but are not quite able to make the first team. Through Hudgings’ guidance, many members of his ”B” teams have later developed into star athletes. Co-captain Johnny Helton proved that he was something of a football player during his two seasons as a regular on the Tiger team. As a junior, he was first- string guard and played a bang-up game of football. In his senior year, he exhibited his customary brand of fine playing, holding down the quarterback ' s position and calling signals most of the season. “ O Hal Weidemeyer, Half Chester Chonowski, Half Hoy Stockton, Half Hal’s undying spirit was an inspiration to the whole team. Whether the Tigers were win¬ ning or losing, Hal was always fighting—and smiling. Chester’s all-around ability is hard to beat anywhere. A courageous, hard fighter, Ches¬ ter has been an invaluable as¬ set to the Tigers for two years. Roy’s kicking, passing and running ability is something to remember. This was his sec¬ ond year as a regular Tiger back. Billy Robb, Tackle When Rilly was in the game the opposing team was in for a rough time. Billy was a hard worker and gave everything he had to the game. Ted Wimberly, Center Ted’s untiring work at cen¬ ter was a feature that kept the Tigers in the thick of the race all of the time. S. C. Grizzle, Half S. C. was the smallest back- field man in the city and also one of the fastest. He returns to the Tigers next year. Edward Carnes, Center Although he was only a sophomore, Ed showed up well in the games he played in. Much is expected of him in the next two years. Rosy Vallone, Guard Rosy’s all-around play at guard won him his second let¬ ter. He could open those holes on offense and stop any play directed at him. Jimmie Teflos, Full Hitting the line for a needed yard or so was Jimmie’s spe¬ cialty, and he usually came through. His blocking was also excellent. W. D. Dunman, End W. D.’s pass snatching abil¬ ity and good end play earned him his second letter on the Tiger team. Fred Gilmore, End Even the fact that he was beset by injuries did not pre¬ vent Freddie from showing that he was an all-around end. Corwin Dodge, Guard Corwin earned his first letter by his steady, dependable playing this year. He is ex¬ pected to prove to be one of Coach Duggan’s best bets next year. H owell Rawlings, Guard As a tackier and blocker, Howell had few peers among the high school guards. He will return to the Tigers next year. Eo Shelton, End Ed’s ability to stop plays directed around his end and to block the opposing tackle made him a valuable man. Jack Heard, Tackle Jack broke up nearly every play that was headed in his direction during the season, proving that he was a handy man to have around. Kermit Beaiian, Tackle Walter Rector, Manager Playing in his junior year, Kermit’s blocking and tackling made the Tigers a tackle who was very dependable. Walter was as able a manager as a team could want. He not only looked after the equipment of the football team but “doubled” in this capacity, being manager of the basketball team also. FOOTBALL SUMMARY The season of 1931 will go down in the annals of Sam Houston as one of the most successful ever experienced in the Tiger den. A squad of about thirty-five players, including six letter-men, reported to Coach Duggan to prepare for a schedule of games that was one of Ihe hardest that a team from Sam Houston has ever faced. Out of this group a team emerged which proved to be a hard-fighting one. The Tigers opened the season on September 21 against the St. Thomas Toms, taking them into camp by a 37-0 score. Nearly every member of the Tiger squad got into the fray and most of them showed to great advantage. It was evident after this game that Sam Houston had a formidable team which had to be reckoned with before the District 13 title was settled. The following week the Tigers worked hard in preparation for Brackenridge High of San Antonio, intent upon getting revenge for the defeat handed to them by the Eagles last year. The Tigers were greatly outweighed and were up agai nst a veteran team, but when the final whistle had blown the Eagles found themselves on Ihe short end of a 26-0 score. The Tigers again proved that they had a running attack that was pointed toward many yards in gain and many touchdowns before the close of the season. With these two wins under their belts the snarling Tigers set out for Corpus Christi the next week to engage the Corpus Christi High School Buccaneers. The Tigers did not play the brand of football which they were capable of playing, displayed a ragged defense that never got to clicking well, and they tasted defeat to the tune of 21-0. This was the first time that the Tigers’ goal line had been crossed, and the defeat made them more determined to win the next week. On October 13, North Dallas High School invaded Houston. The Tigers displayed the smooth attack that had carried them to victory in the first two games and swamped the Dallasites 20-0. On October 19 the Tigers packed up and moved over to Beaumont to take on the Beaumont Royal Purple. The Tiger team traveled in a bus, but a special train carried several hundred rooters, including the famed Black Battalion, to Beaumont for the game. Many hundreds more followed in automobiles to give the Tigers the support which they so richly deserved. The Tigers quickly opened up on the Purple, and when the smoke of the Battle cleared away, Sam Houston had really made up for the defeat handed them by the Purple a year before. They won, 25-0. Spurred on by these victories, the Tigers met Conroe as their first district opponents and swamped them 93-0. Before the first quarter had ended, it was evident that Conroe was really in for a bad after¬ noon even though every Tiger substitute present was being used, some of them in positions they had never before played. The next week-end the Tigers met the Jeff Davis Panthers in what proved to be the deciding game in the District Race. It was raining before the game started and continued to rain all during the con¬ test. The Tigers took an early lead by scoring in the first few minutes of play and then gave Davis four points on two safeties. At the half the score was 10-6 in the Panthers’ favor. Sam Houston made a valiant effort to come back in the last half but did not succeed in making more than two points which were made when the Panthers gave them an intentional safety. The final score was 10-8 in favor of Davis. Angered by this defeat, the next week the Tigers regained their winning stride and won over the San Jacinto Bears by a score of 12-6. The Bears started out quickly and scored within the first few minutes of play. The Tigers scored in the second quarter to make the score even, and then in the third period, pushed over another touchdown that made them a winning team again. The Milby Buffaloes were the next to fall before the Tiger paw. After holding the Tigers scoreless in the first half, the Buffs weakened and as a result came out holding the zero of a 12-0 score. On November 23 the Tigers played their last game by resuming their rivalry against the John Reagan Bulldogs. It was another one of those famous battles between two schools that would rather win over each other than win all their other games. The Tigers started out well by scoring in the first, quarter. Reagan came back in the third to even things up, and then Sam Houston pushed over another touch¬ down to win the game 13-7. Even though the Tigers did not win the district championship, the season of 1934 will be remembered as one in which a fighting Tiger team gave every one of its opponents a real battle. Although his teams have not always finished on top, they have been noted for the fine fighting spirit that Duggan has instilled into them. When given the material to work with and develop, there is not an abler coach than Ed Duggan to be found anywhere. CAPTAIN HAL WEIDEMEYER To ' ' Squat -lo” Weidemeyer must go credit for being one of the peppiest players ever to play for the Tigers. Hal shone especially in his guarding of the opposing team’s sharpshooters and rarely failed to turn in an excellent job. He was always fighting whether the T igers were winning or losing, and showed that he was as able a leader as a team could have. Hal is only a junior and will be hack with the Tigers next year. ASSISTANT COACH HUDGINGS Saco” is also an able assistant to Coach Duggan during the basketball season. When needed, he is ready to take charge of the team. He devotes much of his time to the coaching of the B” team, which is generally made up of first year men and others who must learn the fundamentals of the game. Through his team, Hudgings furnishes opposition for the Tiger team in scrimmage sessions. Billy Bvrns, Center Billy won his second letter at center this year for the Tigers. Billy is tall and angu¬ lar and was able to take the ball off the backboard many a lime. Ed Willy, Forward Ed won his first letter by his all-around forward play. On the man for man defense, Ed is unexcelled in his ability to guard his man. Charlie Giamalva, Guard Charlie’s steady able play was a feature of the Tiger at¬ tack. His keen eye for the bas¬ ket brought the Tigers many points. This was his second let¬ ter and his last year on the team. George Munger, Forward George’s accuracy in hitting the basket gave the Tigers many a badly needed point. This was his first basketball letter and last year on the team. Chester Chonowski, Guard Chester won his second let- let in basketball this year, being the only reserve on the team to letter. Always a hard fighter, he is noted for his ability to take the ball away from his opponents. BASKETBALL SUMMARY When basketball practice was opened by Coach Duggan, a squad of about thirty hoys reported to him. Included in this group were only two letter-men, the rest being hoys who were ready and willing to learn basketball. After about two weeks of intensive practice the Tigers opened up and successfully felled several out-of- town quints before starting their regular play. Even though the team came through these games easily Duggan drilled the hoys harder than ever in preparation for the first game. The Tigers opened the championship race against Jeff Davis at the San Jacinto gym.” After the Tigers had held them to a one-point lead in the first half, Davis t urned on the steam and increased the margin of their lead until the Tigers were unable to overcome it, and as a result the Tigers lost their first game against city competition. The final score was 30-20. The next game was with the San Jacinto Bears. After the Bears had assumed a first half lead, the Tigers rallied in the last half and beat them to the tune of 23-20 for their first city win. The next game the Tiger quintet dropped to Milby by the score of 29-16. It seemed as though the Tigers could not get to functioning properly. The following game, which was with John Reagan, ended the first half of the season for the Tigers. With a fast passing attack, the Tigers hit the basket time and again, and as a result redeemed themselves for the loss in the preceding game. The final score was 34-19. Starting the second round of play, the Tiger quintet met the San Jacinto Bears. The Tigers were unable to get started while the Bears were hitting the basket regularly. When the final whistle had blown, the Tigers were on the short side of a 31-23 score. Next came Milby. Remembering the defeat that the Buffs had handed to them in the first half of the season, the Tigers really got to working in fine style and trounced them by a 30-15 score. The Tigers showed plenty of class in this game. Sam Houston dropped the next game to Reagan in a rough and tumble affair that was marred by too many personal fouls. The Tigers gave the Bulldogs a real battle. It was not until later in the fourth quarter that Reagan gathered the winning margin of points after the lead had changed hands several times. The Tigers closed their season by losing again to the Jeff Davis Panthers. The Tigers fought to avenge the defeat that the Panthers had previously handed them but to no avail. The final score was 34-26. The Tigers finished fifth in the city race, winning three and losing five games. fit COSMOS LITERARY STAFF Mary Sue Bates. Editor Doris Twitchell. This society was formerly the “Old Yazee Club” which was organized at the Y.W.C.A. by student members. This year, the society has enjoyed various social activities. At the beginning of the term, a luncheon and a theatre party were given by the members in honor of those who had been pledged to membership. M rs. Miner complimented the members with a Chinese tea at her home where true Chinese atmos¬ phere was enjoyed. A party was given at the home of Martha Stewart for members and their guests. As the club has done each year previously, a tea was given in honor of the senior members. Each program that the society had this year has been on the topic “Habits and People of Foreign Nations.” Members of the club and teachers of Sam Houston have spoken on this subject. Mary Lou O’Kelly opened the series with a talk on “South America.” Mrs. Miner speaking on “China” con¬ tinued the talks. As she spoke, she exhibited articles and clothing that she had brought with her when she returned from there. As Mrs. Hogan talked on “Hawaii,” she illustrated her points with photo¬ graphs that had been taken while she was there. Miss Hubbard concluded the series with a talk on “France.” DEBATERS From left to right, back row: Bertram Horne (Coach), Jesse Bently, Wilson Grounds, Garland Pyle, James Everhart, Kirlicks Knolle. Tournaments at San Antonio, Dallas, and Yoakum were entered by the debate teams. Very favorable showing was made at all three. Several other out-of-town trips were made, and many out-of-town schools visited Sam Houston to engage in practice debates. Both debate teams won second place in City Interscholastic Meet. Hugh Gibson, boy extemporaneous speaker, placed second; Blanche Kraus, girl extemporaneous speaker, placed third; Miriam Byal, girl declaimer, placed third; Sam Kaminsky was boy declaimer. D. The Most Representative Boy and Girl were elected by the faculty from a list of candidates also nominated by the Cabinet. The beauties in this section were selected en¬ tirely from pictures sent in by any girl desiring to enter the contest, and they were judged by Mr. James Chillman, the director of the Art Museum. One was selected from the entire group of pictures as Sam Houston’s most beautiful girl. H. that all the lost sheep are knocking each other down in the rush! Don’t know whether Gaynelle Furley bakes cherry pie or not, but somehow or other that little Sonny” Allbritton re¬ minds us of dear ole’ Billee Boy ' Re¬ member? And here’s a good one—Mary, Mary (quite contrary) might well be changed to Marion, Marion ,” because Miss Oberholtz IS quite contrary with her daz¬ zling smiles. In fact, we put her next to the Queen of Hearts. Who? Why, Augusta Hardin, of course! Georgey Porgey, Puddin’ Pie,” who kissed the girls (but they didn ' t cry) goes under another name at Sam Houston. Need we say— Harry Kennedy ? We don’t know about Peter the Pump¬ kin eater, but one thing is sure, Marcelle Moran is the gal no one can keep! No sir, this lil’ gal is independent. About as in¬ dependent as the Three Wise Men of Gotham, none other than Chetty, Freddy, and Teddy ( Chonowski, Gilmore , and Wim¬ berly, respectively). These inseparables haven’t put to sea in a bowl yet, but some of their capers nearly measure up. Really, all the S. II. gentlemen” re¬ mind one of the self-same, well known character. SOSSASSITY Stupendous! Splendiforous! Magnificent! Colossal!—What? Why the ’35 Black Battalion Dance held this spring at the Bice Terrace, of course. Everyone was there, my dears—that is, everyone who is anyone. Carrying out the Spanish scheme, those lads in the McCoy-Scott (combined) orchestras dolled up in mustachios” and gave the gals a treat. What an evening! What a life! Gorgeous gowns and gals— gaiety galore—gala gathering! Stags Beahan, Charlie Richards, Jimmie Teflos, Winfrey Lewis—and the rest of the shieks are giving the beauties the rush. We see Inez Murph, Eloise Thompson, Noel Brown, and Mildred Howland retouching in the dressing room and over yonder are Jean Ray, James Alan Shepherd, and that cute little Roberta Arrant resting up from the rush. San Jacinto, Reagan, Rice Institute, and Houston U. are all well represented. Ex-class president, Holmes, and ex-beauty (still beautiful) Peterson are still showing up. We dance till two and then go home, tired but happy, to rest up for the coming events. Congratulations, B. B.! It was a ripping success! And so was the Elaphian Dance honoring the Graduating Football lettermen. Here Sam Houston went elite with a program dance at the Junior League. Every¬ one had a good time—from the faculty on down. The Football boys drank punch, received favors, made speeches, and . . . drank more punch. Everyone, even if he didn ' t dance, had a nice time watching Mr. Spampinato. Again the gals were out in full bloom. President Thelma Kirby presided over the brief interlude—program ? introducing the football heroes to the mike. Billy Robb blushes . . . Ed Murr grins . . . Ed Shelton sighs and looks dreamy . . . Billy Brown ”Hidee Do Gals” . . . and Ted Wimberly tops it all off with a characterization of ex-debate coach Frazer— ”Unaccustomed as I am to public speaking . . Fun, foolishness, and frivolity ran riot, yet, sho ’nuff, we lived up to our dignified goal. No stags—no crashers—no misplaced brightness. It was really a swell party and the Elaphians deserve a big hand. But, hold on here—we can’t, simply can ' t sign off without mentioning the annual Houston University reception. Once again Sam Houston runs off with the beauty title (as we all expected), being well represented by Irish Erin Finnegan, the lass of the laughin ' eyes. That makes seven years in succession we ' ve copped the title. Well, no wonder, look at all this beauty being wasted around these ’yar portals. Yes sir, the Black and Gold really has a monopoly of the high school feminine charm. And such a program we do have to look forward to. Four or five big dances, open houses, and parties galore, and teas by the hundreds—all besides the Senior dance, picnic, and banquet. Even Ye Old Sam Houston Speakers are gonna ' show off with a bigger banquet than ever at LeBlanc’s. Again we say. What a life! What a future! Don ' t wear yourselves out, children, ’cause we have a rollicking good time before us . . . Sosassity shines! The Cosmos staff is truly grateful for the many services so willingly rendered by friends who wished to see our annual a success. To M iss Helen Weinberg and Miss Drew Black Staggs, t he sponsors of the Cosmos, we pay sincere thanks for their in¬ valuable aid and their willing advice. If it were not for their untir¬ ing efforts, Sam Houston would not now be able to claim an annual of Hieh School memories. Mrs. Woodruff has very ably assisted in the Art Department of the Cosmos and deserves commendation for her much needed service. Miss Duvernoy also merits our gratitude for her compli¬ ance in giving us information about the graduates and official lists of them. Mr. Seawright was very agreeable in furnishing us envelopes and other material. And Mr. Snyder was as usual so very nice about furnishing caps and gowns for the Senior pictures. Mr. Sherman, as always, proved to be an invaluable aid in cut¬ ting and mounting the pictures and served as the invariable last minute man” in putting out the book. Mr. Moyes, the principal of Sam Houston, has given us his un¬ rivaled cooperation for which we are duly grateful. Let us also give praise to Mrs. MacDougal, who was very helpful in running off bulletins for us. Without this friendly cooperation, the 1935 Cosmos could never be what it is. a ■r (HJa- ' ; j aA 4 Jf Vf r V JVf sX r y 4- ■ IT clh O LuM.£utiA a ■V. fc 7c 6 _ ’ %L fec£j« A .! d T .
