FFA...More Than Straw Hats,SkoaI FFA ...... Straw hats, cowboy boots, rodeos, pick-up trucks, KVOO Radio, Skoal, goat ropers, and rednecks, right? Wrong! The FFA is more than just raising cows, and wearing your hair short. It is an organization of, by, and for high school students interested in agriculture. Billy Sanders, Muskogee FFA president, said Many people laugh at you when you tell them that you are in FFA. They call you a goat roper. We are trying to change this image. Farmers are the most important people in our society. We can do without computers, although they are a convenience. We don't need T.V. repairmen, electricians, or plumbers, although it would be hard to get used to being without them. But without the farmers we would die. Whenever someone makes fun of the FFA or of farmers, I tell them not to talk with their mouth full. To be in FFA you have to be enrolled in a Vocational Agriculture class. The Vo-Ag classes offered at MHS are Vocational Agriculture I, II, III, IV, Vocational Agriculture Occupational Training, and Vo-Ag Farm Mechanics. Vo-Ag classes don't just teach you how to plant corn or raise animals. There are units in record keeping, budgeting taxes, welding, conservation, public speaking, and leadership just to name a few. FFA members raise animals for the fair and for the livestock show. They also go on field trips. But that is not all that the FFA does. Community service is a big part of the FFA program. Muskogee FFA has completed several community service projects. They landscaped the new Muskogee Public Library and the new Highway Patrol building, they helped in the Coody Creek clean-up campaign, and are presently cooperating with the Muskogee Chamber of Commerce Chamber Maids in planting wild flowers on all major highways leading into Muskogee. The FFA has many after-school projects. A typical day might find Conley Wilson, John Raney, and Kent Barber de-horning cattle for an area rancher. You might see Jim Flusche, Lonnie Daugherty, and John Flusche taking soil samples to analyze the mineral content in the ground to see if the right crops are being grown on the land. You might find Phillip Miller, Randy Tatum, and John Eldridge in the Vo-Ag room studying samples of greenhouse shrubs and trees, or Dwayne Clark, Neal Foltz and Garland Reece working on the many reports FFA files with National FFA Headquarters each year. The reports include membership rosters, program activities, National Chapter Awards Volumn 61 1975-76 . Page 85 FARM 0. , A' e ICA THE NATIONAL STUDYING VOCATIONAL ORGANIZATION Fon AGRICULTURE applications, and a final summary of occupational experience programs within the local chapter. All of the Muskogee FFA programs are sponsored by Wendell Fenton who is assisted by W.G. Parker. Spring shows are a busy time of the year for FFA members. The first is the Four-State Livestock Show in Anderson, Missouri and then comes the Muskogee Junior Livestock Show and finally, the Oklahoma City Livestock Show. So the next time you decide to make fun of someone because he is an FFA member, try to imagine what it would be like to be without people to grow food for you to eat, fibers for the clothes you wear, and the building materials that build your homes.
