THE i957 CHIEFTAI Muskogee's first High School FOREWORD The year 'I957 marks the semi-centennial of the state of Oklahoma. The class of '57, being the fiftieth to grad- uate, recognize not only the progress of the state but also the progress of our school. We, with countless others be- fore us, have gained knowl- edge and guidance through the years spent in Central High. It is the hope of the staff of the '57 Chieftain that the fol- lowing pages may partially record the treasures gathered K wwe? v ii i'i2't'Y.tssf23S. 1 iii 53 or if swag .yggku .Q- N. - :Qs whim Q. QIZA . .b 'W k. .. ' .Q r . ' -.' s'a:.sf?+?'. . . '- Slavs MR. RAYMOND HOLCOMB Member Congratulations upon your graduation from Central High School in the Class of '57. Your accomplishments have taken a lat of work, study and cooperation on your part with your fellow students and the teachers. You are graduating at a very interesting time. This is a period in which our country is looking 'for young men and young women who can be depended upon to do a job well in whatever field they are called upon to perform. By your accomplishments in finishing high school, you have con- vinced your community and your state that you have those qualities that it takes to get a good education. At no time in our history have the high school graduates had better opportunities to do things for both their community and their nation than have the young men and young women who graduate from high school at this time. It is my hope that all of you who can will continue your education at least through four years of college. May I also encourage you wha have a yen for mathematics and science to pursue these courses to the end that you may contribute to the serious need for such trained people in our country at the present time. You have my sincere congratulations upon your graduation and may God's speed rest with you in all of your endeavors in the future. Yours very sincerely, HARRY D. SIMMONS Superintendent lt is a pleasure to extend this final message to a grand group of graduating seniors. You, who have remained steadfast and with sufficient determination to graduate, are certainly to be congratu- lated. Twelve years ago about 700 started out to complete their high school education, but you are one of the 350 who won the coveted prize. According to past records one-half of this graduating class will go on to college and one-half who enter will graduate from college. Will you be one of the top 25 percent to win the college degree? Every age has faced grave problems. But in no other age have there been problems as complex or as perilous as those confronting us today. Twentieth century technology, which has brought mankind so many blessings, has also increased man's power to do evil. Today, the forces of good and evil hang in precarious balance-a balance which must be over-weighted for good if we are to preserve our civilization. You young men and women now graduating will assume the privileges and responsibilities of citizenship in a few short years. How well you will be equipped to solve the problems of an atomic age depends upon you. Will you be wiser, more patient, more firm, of keener vision than this present generation? Will you have a deeper sense of religious and moral responsibility? What you do with your life during the next few years will deter- mine how far you will go up the ladder of successg how well you will be able to meet the problems that will be confronting you for a solution. Our sincere good wishes to each of you in your iourney through life. B. L. WERTZ Principal A 1' W if -A ill R MRS. HAZEL ALDRICH Journalism 2 . L xwngivf, W 'I S B 1 . J MR.
