SENIORS OF '52: It is a great thrill and a wonderful privilege to be an American in times like these that prevail throughout the whole world today. No high school seniors have had more chal- lenging experiences to look forward to than those of the graduating class of 1952. Today as never before our nation is in need of young people with character, balance, poise, understanding and willingness to work. Your duties are many, your obligation demanding, and numerous opportunities for successful accomplishments are beckoning to you. I sincerely believe that the whole cloth out of which you are made and the training that you have had and will continue to have in your home, school, and community will prepare you to accomplish and fulfill and trust and perform any duties demanded of you as a good citizen. It is a great pleasure for me to congratulate each and every one of you upon reaching this milestone in your preparation for a useful life now and in the future. Sincerely, HARRY D. LK-iv---ri ' 1 Congratulations andzbestiwishes to the members of the outstanding 1952 graduating class. Let Me Be Challenged, should be the slogan oi: each member. Yes, let us be challenged by the heights to which men and women like ourselves can rise. Let us be proud of the fact that we contain within ourselves resources of strength and power great enough to enable us to climb far and high. I know that there is much disillusionment, much discouragement, much temptation to do the expedient rather than the right. But you are men and women-and because you are men and women you can rise above the dull level of yielding. It is not what destiny does with you, but what you do with destiny that determines what you shall become. When a human being is determined, what can stop him? Cripple him and you have a Sir Walter Scotty bury Him in the snows of Valley Forge and you have a George Washingtong have him born in abject poverty and you have a Lincolng load him with bitter racial prejudice and you have a Disraelig afflict him with asthma and you have a Theodore Roosevelt. Where you are five or ten years from now depends upon how many times you have been challenged and how many times you have met the challenge with positive action. I Can because I Will will win. SENIOR ,NX .XXX Senior officers for 1952 were Bard Dunkelberger, president, Patty Myers, vice president, Dick Collins, treasurer, and Phyllis Nichols, secretary. The Senior Class of 1952 began its last year at Central High with the election of Bard Dunkelberger as president of the class, Pat Myers, vice-president, Phyllis Nichols, secretary, and Dick Collins, treasurer. Ear- lier in the year, Bob Sturm and Sonya Hively were elected president and vice-president of the student body, Jackie Swicegood, speaker of the house, and Bill Ricketts, Tucker Moore, and Gaye Layne McReynolds, mem- bers of the advisory council. The seniors in Central's Speech Depart- ment have come to great fame during the past few years. Among those of 1952 were Wesley Hornback, who rated superior in all debates during the first semester, and Pat Meyers, who was voted the most outstanding senior girl in Oklahoma debating. The I Speak for Democracy contest was won by Mary Ellen Ritan, and Forney Sandlin placed first in the essay contest, What the Bill of Rights Means to Me. Another senior, Sonya Hively, placed fourth in the National Speech Tournament, held in Los Angeles, California, during her junior year. Seventeen seniors held positions on the outstanding Rougher football team of 1952. Two of these, Virgil Bolinger and Preston Carpenter, were chosen for the North-South team. Many other seniors participated in basketball, baseball, tennis, track, and golf. The Senior Class led this year in the Curtis Campaign, with Mr. Cadwalader's homeroom placing first with over one-ninth of the total sales. Carol Kleppinger was high salesman for the class with 3240, and Mark Schooler, who was high salesman during his junior year, ran a close second. Early in the year, several seniors, who had been in past plays, took roles in Stage Door, the all-school play. The traditional senior play, Green Valleyfl was presented in three performances on April 23, 24, 25, and was one of the best ever to hit Central. The good old days at Central were brought to a happy close with several outstanding events: the annual senior picnic held at Greenleaf, the senior banquet, and the junior- senior prom. At last came the Baccalaureate and the Commencement, which most of the seniors thought would never arrive. They elected George Ladd, presidentg Barbara McElhaney, vice-presidentg Mary Lester, secretaryg and Merle Spears, treasurer. Sue Nell Ramsey and Gene Raines represented their class on the advisory council. This year's junior class had two objectives. These were to give their annual play and to give the seniors a prom which they would always remember. Two outstanding juniors, Joe Schubert an Genelle Overmeyer, placed high in debate during their sophomore year and did even better this year. As a team, they won sweepstakes at the Coffeyville Tournament held in Coffeyville, Kansas. These two stu- dents are ones that Central is really proud of. ,, , ig, ff .r 1' f' U 'Jud' 1 fb! It was one of the most successful plays ever to be given by a junior class. At the conclusion of the final act, the annual Junior Sweetheart was crowned by Joan Bucklin who won this contest in 1951. Juniors on the 1952 Rougher football team were Gerry Dixon, Jerry Huggins, Max Eber- sole, Charles Bowman, Keith Mitchell, Leslie Hunnicutt, Gary Hunt, Sam Woods, Eddie Burn, Chester Brooks and Barto McGheeon. Members of this class were also very active in the other outstanding sports of Central. At last came the Junior-Senior prom which was a great success. It was this event which ended the year of the junior class of 1952. Sophomore officers for 1952 were Gene Foreman, president, Alyce Hutcheson, vice president, Isla Rae Dodson, treasurer, -and Barbara Smith, secretary. The halls of Central High were full of unfamiliar and bewildered faces during the first few weeks of the 1951-1952 school year. These new faces were those of the largest Sophomore class ever to come to Central. It was not long until these new students became well enough acquainted to have their class election and start a government of their own. They elected as their president, Gene Foreman, vice-president, Alyce Hut- cheson, secretary, Barbara Smith, and treas- urer, Isla Rae Dodson. Sharon Corbitt was chosen to represent the sophomores on the advisory council. The sophomores participated in scholastic and athletic events as well as in the other extra school activities. Frederic Dorwart and French Anderson brought great honor to Central's Debate Squad. They won five out of five and six out of seven debates in two contests. French also placed first in Extem- pore in Division II of the Coffeyville, Kan- sas Contest. During the Curtis Campaign, this class showed what fine salesmen they could be. They overran the juniors in this drive, but did not have quite enough sales to top the seniors. High salesman for the sophomores was Steve Haines who was also high sales- man for the whole student body with a total of 3264. Love Your Neighbor, the sophomore play, was a hilarious comedy which proved that this outstanding class also has dramatic talent. The honor of being chosen Mr. and Miss Sophomore was won by Jimmie Drake and Dorothy Harp. The sophomore class of 1952 is one that Central High will be proud to call its senior class of 1954. The Muskogee Chapter of the Future Farmers of America is designed to train boys for farming with the latest methods by giv- ing them practical knowledge and experi- ence. Each member of the club must be enrolled in a vocational agriculture class and have some productive enterprise. For the second time the boys sponsored a donkey basketball game. The main project this year was the publication of a calendar. The F.F.A. members participated in stock shows and judging contests. They sent dele- gates to the Convention in Stillwater. STAGECRAFT The key word for the Stage Craft Club is Synchronization, Their motto is The Last Notice, because they stand ready to help anyone at anytime. Some of the activities of the Club this year were: Creating and recreating scenery for all the school playsg operating the sound system in the auditorium and gymg and op- erating the scoreboard for the ball games. In addition to these things, the boys did repair work on the stage and light fixtures. The week before Christmas, by means of a public address system using four loud speakers on top of Central High School, the boys played carols before and after school. This certainly added to the spirit of Christ- mas. A few years ago the club was organized by Mr. J. T. Huckstep, who is their present sponsor. The officers for 1952 were: Russell Clancy, presidentg Gary Bright, vice-presi- dentg David Carlton, secretaryg and Larry Peterson, treasurer. ,El . --1 if ,-.. , . ,ex ' r J f . . RAC SQUAD The Crack Squad, the marching organiza- tion of the pep squad, was organized to add more spirit to the athletic functions at Cen- tral. It is composed of fifty girls from the junior and senior classes who can easily be identified by their emerald green and white uniforms. This year during the half-time of each football game the group marched and performed with the CHS Band. Under the leadership of Mrs. Bobbie Laurenzie the Crack Squad played a vital part in promoting the fine school spirit for which Central is noted. . The most important event in the life of a Crack Squad girl is always the crowning of the colonel. This year, on December 14, Joe Acebo was given this honor. Crack Squad girls are shown as they prepare to embark on another of their pep trips to give whole- hearted support to our Rougher men.
