Every person has a style that makes a fashion statement. There's always a style for your own imagination and individuality. Some like ’em hot. and some like 'em cold. What's hot for one is not hot for another. Some hot styles are the classic prep, on-the- move person, and the Outlaw. The classic American Prep will wear washed oxfords, argyle sweaters, twill shorts, tipped cardigans, twill pants, and twill skirts. For the on-the-move person, knits are it in mini dresses, plaid woven shirts, knit pants and skirts, cable sweaters, cropped sweaters, striped polo sweaters, knit turtle-necks, knit zip-neck tops, and pleated pants. For the Outlaw, roughness is the look in denim minis, laun- dered multi-buttoned skirts, twill shorts, acid-washed denim shirts, jeans and sweaters, belted twill pants. Nordic sweaters, and checked woven shirts. And for outer wear, the street equip- ment is acid-washed corduroy jackets, leather or twill bomber jackets, and stone-washed denim jackets with or without leather cord or trim. •adolescent yuppie. Graduation, of course, marks an immediate goal, but offers special features. They are the presidential election, leap year, and the Olympics. A tradition of the Olympics is the Lighting of the Torch and the Passing of the Torch, symbols of continuing tradition of honor and of the best passed from generation to generation. My first students were my two baby dolls. Shirley Temple and Mr. Bear. I can remember carefully lining them up on the porch steps of my grandmother s house and singing the ABC song to them. They never raised their hands or opened their mouths, but I thought they were pretty smart. However, the final decision was made when I was a junior in high school. My biology teacher. Mrs. Winfred Turner, was my inspiration. She was so interested in each of us. In her sincere, unique way she helped us realize our potential I have dreamed of being like her — to work with a positive manner to touch lives of other youth. I hope I have! Pat Freemyer Mrs. Pat Freemyer I teach because of its many challenges. In teaching. I learn as well as teach. Teaching is a people-oriented career, and I enjoy working with young people hot only do I work with the students, but also the parents, faculty, and administration. The high school years are a time of transition from childhood to adulthood. I like to feel that I help facilitate this process. I not only teach them subject matters, but also about themselves and the world. In vocational education. I prepare young people for the real world by providing them both the training students require for successful employment and the education they need for personal fulfillment. When my students reflect a far broader un- derstanding of the purpose of education. I realize then that I have gotten something out of the deal. John Doc Turner John ‘Doc’’ Turner Teaching was my second career choice, but has since become my first in importance. In teaching, there are complicated responsibilities, but many re- wards. I feel that I have and will continue to succeed in the task of offering young people the skills, knowl- edge. confidence, and support that they need In order to achieve economic independence and personal sat- isfaction in the real world. When I observe the changes in attitudes and skills of my students. I realize that teaching is what I want to continue to do. Thelma Bryant Miss Thelma Bryant I decided to become a teacher for three reasons. First, I love teaching people. Second, my whole life seems to be involved in instructing people about something. Last, my beloved sister influenced me in my chosen profession. John Garofas I believe I have the ability to penetrate the thick walls built up In the students' minds to prevent an education from making it through. I love being a light at the end of the tunnel in their minds. Rugenal Anderson I can't remember ever wanting to do anything other than teach . .. Maybe because I've always liked learning. And I was fortunate enough to have a real teacher in my life. I think that that can make a real difference. When someone believes in you. it helps you to believe in yourself. I guess that I just wanted a chance to pass that along. Stephanie Graznak I wanted to be a teacher since I was five years old. I always wanted to know Why?'' and I still do. But once I got this information. I wanted to share it. I used to play school' with my younger brothers, and when they escaped the classroom. I had an imaginary class. I love teaching. I tried to stop teaching for a couple of years, but I couldn't stay away. I missed being with my kids” and helping them to fulfill their dreams. The Cougars, led by sophomore quarterback Andrew Duddo Terry, and the outstanding running of Slick” Ricky Foreman re- mained a constant throughout the season. Sophomore Jeff “Bo Tate came to life in the latter half of the season with some game- winning touchdowns. Few opponents could stop the running game of the Cougars as the defense sparked the team on even more by keeping the opponents’ scores to a minimum. The Cougars were blessed with very few major injuries, except for players James Reed, who broke his leg in the game against Blythe- ville, James Kinsey, who separated a shoulder in the game against Jonesboro, and Turell Williams, who was injured in the game against Clarksdale. A speaking choir is a group of people who move and speak together. This year's choir performed children's poetry along with a few Christmas selections to the grade schools, Delta Kappa Gamma, and United Methodist Women. For Black History Month, they moved on to some more serious selections and performed for the Social Security office. They have also performed at various other places throughout the year. NEWSPAPER 225 This year’s COUGAR was composed of a lot of intensity and hard work. We tried to capture all the memories of the year gone by, and the times we’ve spent together. Mrs. Pittman, and everyone on the COUGAR staff, put in long hours, so that the COUGAR could turn out ex- citing and new. All this effort from the COUGAR staffers, who represented the school, was to show the infinite pride and spirit that we have for CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL. COUGAR STAFF 227 Dear Cougars: We present this gift to you from us. The COUGAR has captured the memories of Homecoming, friends, the Snow, and our teachers. We have tried to gather in these pages the times, the places, and the peo- ple that you cherish and want to remem- ber forever. We hope our pictures and pages enrich and satisfy your special life at our special school. I want to thank Mrs. Pittman for all the pushing and screaming — and occasional hugging — she did because there would not be a yearbook without her. Thanks, COUGAR staff, for putting up with me because at times I can be impossible. Thanks, Stacey, Jada, Foster and John for staying everyday 7th period to get the unfinished work done. I’ll never be able to thank Karen and Nikita enough for punch- ing away on those computer keys. Last, but not least, thanks, Tillman, for all those times you were there to help us when we needed it! Cougars are forever cool!! Michelle Oliver 88 COUGAR editor THOSE WINNING LOOKS 229 FRIENDSHIPS CAMERA
