How many times we have heard or sung these words and never really stopped to consider their meaning. Central, the building on the hill, has the sky for a backdrop, while Central, the student body and faculty, has the spirit of the Indians ever present. The spirit of the Indians — the athletes, the scholars, the musicians, and the other members of the tribe at Central, whether winning or losing, must never falter or die, for it is the backbone and supp ort of Cen- traI. We have spent many hours in the buildings and with the people of Central, but soon this time of our lives will end. Then, only the memories of our high school days will remain. We will have many memories of the teachers and students we knew, of the classroom activities and the knowledge and skills we learned there, and of the spirit at Central — the many pep rallies and bonfires and the ath- letic contests. Memories are like leaves,- they fall and some fly away and are for- gotten, while others remain and become a part of our lives. Our tree has shed its leaves; the most meaningful memories of yester- day, the moments just past, are captured here, within fhes pages. Come laugh, cry, and remember with us. t School Ycor 69- 70 4 At C. H. A school year passes, hour by hour, day by day, month by month. Tests are taken; grades are recorded; and report cards are handed out. But theres more to a school year than the class- room activities. We ll remember some of the important events tike the beauty pageants and home- coming, and we expect to find these pictured in the annua! But what about the many events that usually pass by unnoticed? Bach month of school is busy, full of varied activities; some remem- bered, others soon forgotten. Summer vacation ends; a school year begins; the leaves of autumn fall; winter brings snow and desolation; spring arrives with a burst of color; the seniors graduate, and a school year is over. 5 August The admission price for the scrimmage was a ‘TOW- EL??? No, surely that s not all — the minds of the many students should be a part of it too! The mind of a school must somehow be a subtle blending of the variety of minds found within the school. A school is chiefly an insti- tute of learning; we learn both in the classroom and in our contacts with the organizations of a school. The scholars who have achieved in the classroom and in their studies, the devoted citizens of Centra! the doers, the members of the various dubs, and the staffs of the two school publications, all combine to form the academic part, or mind, of Centra! 17 HONOR GRADU AT HR 1969-70 Mike Hill Rocky Pang Florence Jo Qmilh ,9 Marcia Boyle Marilyn Carter Frances Cartwright Terri Dayhoff Charla Decse Carol Judianne Karen Flsie Jane Edwards Edwards Elam Ewart Faust Jimmie Ruth Grubbs Don Hill Mike Hill Becky Jackson Charles Jackson Steve Jones 20 Jim Milam Jim Pang Riley Porter Terry Ray Cynthia Reynolds Dill Simmons Florence Jo Smith Charlotte Stratton Sandra Tamburo Maribeth Anna Thompson Tschepikow The four main requirements for membership in the Nation- al Honor Society are SCHOLARSHIP, CHARACTER, LEAD- ERSHIP. and SERVICE. 15% of the members of the Senior Class may be chosen for membership. They are the ones who care, the ones who love, and those who take pride in their school. School spirit is everywhere. It may be in many shapes and sizes, and it may be displayed by an entire student body or by only one student working for the school. Besides school spirit, there is a spirit of beau- ty, the beauty of nature, and the beauty of people, pervading the campus. The band marching at halftime, the cheerleaders cheering at ball- games and pep rallies, and the ath- letes competing are symbolic of the spirit at Centra! 49 Who gets the spirit stick? 50 'NI0KS S%i GO r i; 7- ■.EAT JuNiQPS SAY:B AT S u rcgR] IM RF RifFRiRH Qpirit Reigns At C.H.Q. 51 A- TEAM CHEERLEADERS Marilyn Carter Miki Griffin Karen Elam, Co-Captain Becky Lueken Florence Jo Smith Beth Wr ht Becky Jackson, Captain B- TEAM CHEERLEADERS Jo Beauchamp. The Chicks took the opening kickoff and drove 68 yards for a score made by Tommy Tompkins. They pushed across three more tallies in the fourth period to down the Indians, 28 to 0. Sherman Eames and Morris Ross were the leading ground gainers. Even though the Indians met defeat, they were victorious in the eyes of the Central fans for their spirit and sports- manship. McClellan 29 Helena 0 The Indians hosted the second game to the Mc- Clellan Lions on September 12. In the first half the Indians yielded only seven points, but in the second half McClellan broke loose and scored three more touchdowns, making the score 29 to 0 at the end of the game. After failing to complete any passes against Blytheville, the Indians completed ten passes for 165 yards against McClellan and gained 113 yards running. Helena 13 Marianna 7 On September 26, the Indians had their first win in 13 games over the favored Marianna Porcupines. After a punt blocked by Kenny Fielder and a sprint by Morris Ross to the Mar- ianna one, Sherman Fames blasted over a tackle for the score, giving the Indians an early 7 to 0 lead with the extra point by Jim Malone. Later in the first quarter the Indians moved the ball to the Marianna five where Fames again found a hole and scored. The Porcupines scored in the last few minutes making the final score Helena 13, Marianna 7. Since the beginning of their football compe- tition, Marianna and Helena have been heated rivals. Marianna honored the Indians by sending Coach Smith a funeral wreath, somewhat prema- turely, offering condolences. Guess who had the last laugh! The Indians took out their vengeance on a dummy porcupine dragged around by the cheerleaders and hung at Central's front en- trance. With this, all the student's spirit, and the Indians' go power,” we were victorious. The pep rallies in the halls all morning long, Mrs. Miller's Mustang, and the hand winning the spirit stick were all parts of a highly active day. That-night the Indians got off to a rather slow start, and after trailing 21 to 0 at the half, the situation looked dismal. However the tribe came roaring back in the final two periods of the play to lead 28-27 with only four minutes to play. In those four minutes, the Indians were hurt by costly penalties that aided Forrest City to their last T.D. The score ended 33-28 in favor of the Mustangs. Outstanding players for the Indians were Steve Higginbothom and Charles Jackson. West Memphis 37 Helena 16 On October 10. the West Memphis Blue Devils invaded Gid Polk Stadium. West Memphis took an early lead in the first quarter when Terr)’ McFarland scored twice on 40 and 34-yard runs. In the second quarter Higginbothom ran a 4-yard keeper into the end zone and also scored the two point conversion. West Memphis made it to the end zone three more times and Higginbothom teamed with Conditt for Central's final touchdown. Central’s first score came in the second quarter on a 25-yard pass to Conditt. Malone’s PAT was blocked. In the third quarter Kenny Fielder intercepted a DeWitt pass and returned it to the Central 45. A two-yard keeper, a nine-yard pass, and a 44-yard pass to Jackson was good for the final touchdown.
