Central High School 969 '' have a ways known fhaf at last would take this road, but yester- day did not know that it would be today. The planning of an annual begins a full year in advance. At first there is only the vaguest thought of what the annual should be. Ideas are conceived and forgotten, but the death of each idea be- gins a foundation on which to build. The school year begins, and as the members of the staff become involved with their studies and with each other, this nebulous thing called an annual takes on form and starts to grow. Events shape the annual as do the fads and fashions of the year, and suddenly there it is — a history of a high school year, a portrait of men and women and young adults work- ing together, a reflection of the thoughts and personalities of the small, close-knit group of people who make up an annual staff. We of the 1969 annual staff wish to represent with our annual the spirit of today. There is the courage within our generation to challenge traditions, to face our problems and our fellow men. It is a complicated world we live in, and we could think ofnothing better to mirror this complexity than the individual human being with all of his inroads of thoughts and emotions. We began with the idea of the individual at Central and placed him against the cycle of the seasons and the passing of time. For the sophomore it begins a year of readjustment; a year of excite- ment — full of new friends and new ideas. Qophomore Class Officers New at Central High School are EDDIE BRYANT and RAY MILLER. It was a small team, but it was a team in every sense of the word. Every member of the football squad knew what it was to work as an individual toward a common goal. Despite the won-lost record, each footballplayer emerged from this ex- perience with a valuable memory of co-operation, of spirit andper sever- zoce. Do you remember the excitement in the Qtande before the home- coming ceremony began? Do you remember the look on Jody q face when they crowned her queen? Not often during the course ofa pep ratty does a big green drag- on come running out of the locker room. But then, not every day is Homecoming. The dragon was stain by the Indian braves and the pep ratty continued. The dead Dewitt dragon made another ap- pearance later in the day as he was dragged through the streets in the pep parade. Can you dig it Baby? Are you ready for if? HOMECOMING! An innovation this year at Central was the Color Week preceding Homecoming. Varied costumes were seen in the halls on Tie Day, Hat Day, Sneak- er Day, and Clash Day. Homecoming was pro- claimed Color Day. You have to see it to believe it. A pep ratty at Central will KNOCK YOU OUT, CAT! In Service to the School The following section belongs to those who hold the g emorous posi- tions end do the dirty work. These ere e so the individue Is end orgenize- tions who do the nit-picking jobs end for the leest recognition. We would like to honor these people,, not beceuse they ere,, but beceuse they do. Beceuse they do so much, we will begin with the A-teem cheerleed- ers. The B-Team Cheerleaders, who are selected by the freshman class, serve the high school in many ways. Although the cheerleaders are always active, many things they do go unnoticed. They sell programs at the football games, make signs for pep rallies, cheer for the B-Team games, and give moral support to the sophomores during pep rallies. Monitors The Monitors, who give up their study halls, take on an obligation and a re- sponsibility to the school in accepting their posts. Their job is to keep the halls clear of students, and to assist the teach- ers whenever necessary. Mike Hill, head monitor, compiles the absentee list daily. No credit is given to the monitors, and their job is done as a service to the school. Central's Fire Marshals, headed by Steve Jones, play an important behind-the- scene role in the school's safety. They see that all fire extinguishers are kept in working order, inspect all schools in the Helena-West Helena school system, and are responsible for all fire drills. They are from left to right: Steve Jones, Ricky Allen, Bill Simmons, Bobby Jenkins, and Charlie Jackson. 44 Library Club The Library Club consists of people who are assistants to Mrs. Anderson. These are the club officers performing some of their many duties. The patrolboys are very important to Central High School. These boys have sacrificed their time to direct the traffic, to maintain order and consistency in traffic direction, and to prevent accidents. Our athletic department strives to make Central number one in both spirit and participation. The C Club and the F.C.A. work together in achieving these goals. Conservation Club Sponsored by Mr. Bill Munden, the members of the Conservation Club learn fish and game laws and how to preserve our woods and forests. One of this year's projects was the planting of trees in the St. Francis National Park. SPANISH CLUB is open to third and fourth year Spanish students. By this time the drop-outs have drop- ped out, and the remaining people are the die-hards. They are either well on their way to mastery of the language or Mrs. Hickey has grown accustomed to their butchery of it. Either way, Spanish Club is an informal group. Sponsored, of course, by Mrs. Hickey, the members share many memories of pihata parties, trips to Pancho's, and other fiestas. This year a new mem- ory and a very special friend became part of the Spanish Club, Senorita Luisa Cantelli came to Central as an ex- change teacher. Future Teachers of America The F.T.A., sponsored by Mrs. Susan McCartney and Mrs. Charlotte Pittman, is a club organized for the purpose of acquainting its members with the facets of the teaching profession. This organization is open to any senior who has main- tained a B average. As president, Miriam Zambie, has dedicated time and effort for the benefit of F.T.A. Future Homemakers of America FHA is composed of girls who take or have taken Home Making at least one year. Linda Kerr, President, has had a busy and successful term of office. The club's annual sale of Stanley Products amounted to over $1800. The FHA is a popular organization because of the frequent parties it sponsors. Winter we represent in the spirit oh the Junior year. Pays hall into a routine oh quiet work and understanding. Larry Harcourt, 1969 presi- dent; Ricky Long, vice-president; Wilma Young, secretary; and Margaret Trainer, treasurer, left immediately after election to office to attend a week long convention of workshop and committee meetings. Their ad- vance preparation for office has proved its success in the student council's activities for 1968-69. When school opened, the new sophomores were greeted with green tags and friendly signs to guide them around the big high school. Among the more worthy projects was the gathering and delivering of Christmas baskets to needy families. The entire school participated in this activity and in the United Fund Drive which the council sponsored. The student council keeps a monthly calendar, designs bulletin boards, and awards an annual scholarship. The student council is one of the most solvent organizations at Central, deriving most of its revenue from the ever-popular Coke machine they have bought and installed at their own expense. Here you see the student council at work on their yearly Christmas tree in the front hall. 89 Summer, autumn, winter — andeo in- evitably we come to spring. The change is stow and subtle. The days grow longer as they must to include all that must be done. The nights are cool and the air is Tilled with anticipation, an indeTinable sense oT the Tuture. Then suddenly the winter is over and the metamorphosis is complete. Somewhere, somehow we have become seniors. We have not come to Spring, we were too busy along the way. The news of the Senora's new honor broke the surface at Central with scarcely a ripple. We were pleased that the world should recognize our Senora, but we were hardly surprised. Mrs. Hickey is the Spanish department at Central, teaching second, third, and fourth year levels. She teaches not only the language but also a love of the language. She creates for the student an interest and an insight into the Spanish-speaking culture. We are very proud of the English teachers at Central. Al- though the Jr. High activities and curricu- lum are individually supervised, the two schools are united through a common school spirit. 168 169 Monitors The monitors have a great responsibility. It is their duty to keep halls quiet, report absentees, and to do personal favors for the teachers. To be a monitor a student must maintain at least a C average. 171 Junior High leta Club President, Gary Alexander ias proven to be invaluable to his chool. Very active Student Council President, Jimbo Boyd was an excellent leader this year. 172 Football Captain, Tommy Fridell led the Papooses to many victories this year. Hall of Fame Ann Lambert served as captain of the cheerleaders and was elected as Homecoming Queen. Outstanding basketball player, Randy Johns, led the Papooses to many victories this year. I Joe Woodyard was ebesen an outstanding player this year. Athletic Vaughan McGuery served as football captain and basketball captain this year. He was also elected outstanding football player. Everyone knew they would when the newly organized pep squad ran out on the field before the game. Maybe it was the extra encouragement from the cheerleaders; maybe it was the excited squeal of the newly elected Homecoming royalty, but somehow they just had to win—and they did. Some of its many functions are to make shakers and sell candy. The officers are Gary Alexander, President; Bob Mitchell, Vice President; Judy Cracraft, Secretary; Jerry Young, Treasurer. Their new sponsor will be Mrs. Gillihan. 180 Student Council The Student Council is considered the foundation of the school because it sponsors so many major activities. Two projects sponsored by the Student Council were the purchasing of a trophy case and the location sign in front of the school.
