It has played such an important part in the history and growth of our Twin Cities and has given our town the distinction of being Arkansas' only seaport. Central High is indirectly obligated and grateful to the mighty Mississippi for its existence, and now we are even more conscious of the part it will play in our future since there is a probability that Helena will have a bridge in the very near future. Now we humbly present to you, students and faculty of Central, your 1957 CHIEF. We hope you will enjoy it now and through the years. CURTIS COPE Manager: JAMES MURPHREE In the spring of 1956 the Indians completed the most successful track season in Cen- tral's history. They competed against the best teams in Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Missouri. The season opened with the Jonesboro Relay. Though the team was handicapped with injuries, it placed third and tied two records. The Delta and Ouachita relays followed the Jonesboro Relay. Although the Indians also entered these two relays with injuries, they scored second, setting one record and tying another. Two weeks later the Central High Track Team went into the District 6A Track Meet in top shape. They won the meet with a score of 971 2 points out of 165. This was the best record set by a team in many years. Coach Cope took 13 boys to the State Meet. Our boys were predicted to place fifth in the state, but they walked away with the championship. They scored the amazing score of 49 points. Alan Sugg cleared the bar at twelve feet, two inches. The 880 relay team broke the previous state record.
