No Witnesses THE SENIORS May, 1952 TftaytifCKe TfliKttenA First row: Pat Spivey, Nancy Jean Smith, Nancy Grace Smith. Anne Sugg. Second row: Gary Schwartz. Haze] Yancey, Sydney Ogden, Betty Abel Gregory. Every year the Seniors at Central participate in a magazine sale sponsored by the Curtis Publishing Company. The profit made goes toward the purchasing of the Senior gift. This year the Seniors made S505. The Senior class was divided into two teams with two captains for each team. These captains were Pat Spivey and Hazel Yancey; Gary Schwartz and Sydney Ogden. Betty Abel Gregory was the head captain of both teams. The high salesman for this year was Nancy Grace Smith. She won an RCA Victor portable radio. Anne Sugg was second high salesman. She was awarded a wrist watch. There were two Ladies’ Home Journal prizes awarded. First prize was a Sheaffer pen and pencil set, won by Nancy Grace Smith. Shirley Joyner won the second prize which was $2.50. The Jackpot was a main feature of the magazine sale. The name of every senior was placed in a box, and every day a name was drawn. If the person whose name was drawn had not sold $20 worth of magazines, no one received the Jackpot, and $2.50 would be added to the amount already in the Jackpot. The winners of the Jackpot were Nancy Jean Smith, winning once, and Virginia Moneymaker, winning twice. This was also the hardest schedule ever faced by the Indians. The Tribe got off to a bad start by losing their first three games by big margins to DeWitt, Class “AA” Jonesboro, and Powerful North Little Rock of the Big Six Con- ference. The warriors gave the Mustangs from Forrest City a scare before going down into defeat. The Conference Champion, Brinkley, eked out a win over the Redmen in a bang-up game. In our only win of the season, the Braves scored two times in the last half to beat the Wynne Yellow jackets, 1950 State Champions. Stuttgart. McGehee romped over the Indians, and in the last game, our annual Turkey Bowl tilt with Marianna, the Porkeys’ beat us for the first time in six years. Jimmy Word, Manager; Coach Morris. The Papooses had their best season since 1949 by winning three games, losing three, and tying two. The “Paps” sputtered at the start of the season but ended up in high. Outstanding plays during the season were: Pullback James McMillian’s long 73- yard run against Forrest City, Halfback Jimmie Harcourt’s 78 jaunt against Cotton Plant. The Baby Indians proved they could take to the air, too, with Quarterback James Norman throwing a long 25 yard pass to End Ellis Ogden. The Injuns were hot and cold, looking great one moment and sorry the next. The Indian basketeers won the City Championship from Sacred Heart Academy again this year in three close contests. Toward the end of the season the Maroon and Silver exploded and showed some of their championship form. The Indians entered the District 6 Dribble Derby only to lose to the Pre-Tourna- ment favorites, Des Arc, in a closely contested game, which saw three Rcdmen hoopsters foul out in the fourth quarter. That proved to be the turning point in the game. This compiled a total of five wins and one loss for a percentage of .833. ACTION SHOTS OF VARSITY The stands are quiet as Harness tries for a free- shot. Garner shoots a onc-hand shot from the key. 'pafeoo ea The Papooses seemed to follow the old proverb “Son like father” by compiling an even worse record, winning 3 out of 17. than their “Pappys” and “Mammys”, the Indians and Squaws. Inexperience is more than likely the cause of this, as the Pa- pooses didn’t have a letterman on the squad. The Junior Redskins won their first game of the District Tournament from Aubrey, but lost to Vanndale in the quarter-finals. With most of the Papooses back next year, they hope to improve on their record. 'Va utitty Shot The Indians are anxious to get on the war-path before a game. The team as a whole seemed to show a great improvement over that of last year. The Squaws have great hopes of entering whole-heartedly into the tournament this year, which is being held at Forrest City on the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th of March. They meet Vanndalc in their first game. If the girls win this game, it will be the first time since the consolidation of the two schools that the Squaws have proceeded to the second division of the tournament. As this annual goes to press before the outcome of that game, our sincere wishes for the best of luck go with the Squaws. .27 37 Marianna 31 26 Brinkley Squaws 27 40 DeWitt Squaws . 23 32 !...
