School is not just a building----primarily it is a student body. A school con be seen and judged by observing and judging its students. Therefore, the purpose of this book is to present views of our student body as a pictorial record of the school year 1950-1951. In line with this theme, the winners of the annual who's who con- test, sponsored by this yearbook, are pictured on the introductory pages of each section. These students are considered by the student body as representative of those characteristics which are found in the ideal stu- dent. Introducing the book itself are Mr. and Miss Central High School, chosen from the Senior Class as best representing all of these characteris- tics. The Most Intelligent Girl and Boy introduce the Class Section; Most Dependable Girl and Boy, Organizations; Most Athletic Girl and Boy, Sports; Most Attractive Girl and Boy, Features; and Girl and Boy with the Best Personalities, Advertisements. Because this contest was open to Juniors and Seniors, the Most Pro- mising Freshmen and the Most Outstanding Sophomores were elected from their respective classes. Their pictures appear in the feature sec- tion. 'Tite tyiiit Of pelvice The spirit of service so well exemplified by the late president of the School Board, Mr. Cadwallader Leonidas Polk, Jr., is one which shall be an ever present reminder of the goal toward which we may work. We, the students of Central, can never forget the interest in young people which Mr. Polk so clearly showed. Various organizations within the school could always count on him to back their projectsandactivities with his support and attendance. It was in returning from such an activity,a ball game in Brinkley, that Mr. Polk met his untimely death. The whole school system, as well as the community, immediately felt and realized the loss they had sustained. The students of today and those who are to follow could well use his life of service and good citizenship as an example by which to pattern their lives. It is to his memory that we dedicate this book. Qttc) QdminisfaatioH Mr. J. F. Wahl Superintendent Mr. G. B. Cromwell Business Manager Miss Bobsie Ferguson Principal Mr. W. A. Friends, Annalene and Ann pause long enough to smile at the birdie at the S.A.S.C. Through the organization of the Student Council, the students learn how toapply them- selves to the management of the institutions of our democratic society. The Council offers a real opportunity for leadership and service in the management of all school activities. A major purpose of this organization is to teach citizenship through student participa- tion. The Council is composed of two representatives from each home room, the President of the Student Body, the Head Monitor, and a publications representative. The main project of the organization this year has been to purchase a pub lie ad dress sys- tem for the gymnasium. The officers of the Council are: President, Annalene Brown; Vice-President, Paula Crook; Secretary-Treasurer, Vigrinia Bryan. The Council sponsor is Miss Willie Mae Faulkner. COUNCIL ACTIVITIES 1950-51 COOKIE JAR CAMPAIGN The sum of SI81 was collected for the Cookie Jar Fund from which contributions have been made to a number of charities and to our own social service. MONEY MAKING PROJECTS The sale of concessions, school pins, streetmarkers, and basketball pins were the main money-making projects of this year. They aided Greece by sending old clothes collected by the home rooms to the unfortunate children. SOCIAL ACTIVITIES The Council proclaimed Twirp Season during which the females were requested to fur- nish all necessary funds on dates and other occasions. Thishappy week was climaxed by the Halloween dance. The Homecoming Dance, the Spring Formal, assembly programsandother forms of entertainment are all sponsored by the Council. CONVENTIONS ATTENDED Annalene Brown, Ann Mathes, and Solomon Feldman attended the Southern Association of Student Councils in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where Annalene took part on a panel discussion and Ann led a discussion group. Annalene, Paula Crook, and Ann represented us at the Arkansas Association of Student Councils meeting at Magnolia last April. Last year's president Marilyn Locker and Ann attended the meeting of the National Association of Student Councils held in Denver, Colorado, in June. Both girls led a discussion group at this convention. We were host to the Inter-City meeting here in March. Above: American Education Week featured Parents' Night, affording parents an opportunity to visit the school, meet the teachers, and hear Mr. Forrest Rozell of the Arkansas Education Association. Refreshments were served after- wards by Council members who served as hosts and hostesses throughout the evening. Below; When we celebrated the Yuletide season, the halls were decked with beautiful decorations and a display of the nativity scene, as well as the traditional boughs of holly. A giant Christmas tree monopolized the south lob- by downstairs. Somehow it kept its lighted vigil despite its precarious position 'mid all the hustle and bustle near the front door. Baskets of food, toys, and clothing were collected in each homeroom and distributed to needy families during the holidays. Reading clockwise: She got her man at the football auction. The Braves then journeyed to Newport where, injury riddled, they were defeated. The firstwin of the season was at the expense of Jonesboro, but they were defeated the next week by the Forrest City Mustangs with R.D. Robertson scoring the only touchdown. Our next game was won from Brinkley and was notable for the brilliant running of Bobby Proctor and the ball-handling of Jim Harness. Five Indians made All District, even though the team had a rough season. They are: left to right: Mabry, McRee, B. Proctor, Webster, and Robertson. Indians McDonald and Robertson putting a stop on a Marianna runner as the Indians down Marianna in the traditional Homecoming game. Other Indians in action are Harness and Bobby Proctor. One might consider the Stuttgart game a grudge game, for the Ricebirds kept the Indians from winning the Conference Championship last year as they defeated us 19-6. But we mode up for the defeat by winning this year. The next two games, against Whitehaven and DeWitt, were won when the Indians showed some of their old zip. The Braves then journeyed to Van Buren. After holding the Pointers stymied for three quarters, they let Van Buren score, and that's the way the game ended, in their favor. Second Row: Manager Sidney Ogden, Johnny McRee, Bobby Birmingham, Dickie Mabry, Charles Whitworth, Curly Joyner, Coach Cal Hastings. The Central High Indians started the 1951 basketball season at a slow pace. After the first few games they finally caught fire and went on to win the District 6A Conference Championship The season ended with 19 wins and 2 losses. With the same spirit and determination they entered the sixth district tournament. Meeting Forrest City in their first game they encountered stiff competition, but, fired with school spirit and a will to win, they defeated their opponents by one point. With their stiffest competition behind them, the Indians went on to win the championship, defeating Stuttgart in the final round. After copping the district trophy, they went on to the state tournament. The Braves defeated Warren in their first game and Fordyce in the second, but they found the going a bit rough in the quarter-finals, when they bowed to Fort Smith 37-26. Fort Smith went on to win the state champ- ionship from Center Ridge. Trophies won by Central High Indians at tournaments for Conference and District championships. ? leam Behind the scenes was another team composed of the substitutes and hopeful Indian prospects. This team also did well for itself in the three games they played, defeating Elaine twice and being defeated by the same team once. Bobby Proctor going in for a crip shot in the championship game with Stuttgart, as the In- dians trimmed the Ricebirds. The Indians found their hitting to still be a little off, but their determination and drive helped them win. Jim Harness fires a long shot from the top of the key, scoring two points, as the Indians defeat Forrest City in their first game in the 6th District Tournament held at Brinkley. Again Harness scores in a hard fought game in which the Indians found the going o bit rough. This was one of the few crip shots the Indians had all night, as the Mus- tangs kept them well away from the basket, but the Indians had their hitting clothes on and went on to win by a score of 43-42. enicl Gills’ basketball First Row, left to right: Ann Ashbum, Blanche Lambert, Maxine Proctor, Betty Oxner, Sarah Smith, Ernestine Jones, Imogene James. Although they had a fair season, they could not find the basket in time for the tournament, in which they lost their first game to Hughes. The girls certainly deserve the credit for a long season of hard work under the cooching of Mr. Bruce Slaughter. The experience they gained should stand them in good stead next year. Br-r-f-r. Sure iscold, isn't it, girls? These are the graduating letter- women of the Central High Squaws who find the March wind a little too cold for comfort. These girls were picked by the judges for the All-Tournament Team at Elaine. They are Marion Doddand Dorthy June Brady, and very decor- ative additions they are, too. unici Cfills' “Team Here is another behind-the-scene story of a team of hopefuls. This is the Junior Girls' Team which is composed entirely of Freshman girls. These girls did not have a regular sche- dule for the season, but they did play three games with Elaine. They were defeated in two of these games, but some good prospects were evident. They entered the Junior Girls' Tour- nament at Elaine, only to be defeated by Rondo in their first game. We expect great things from these girls in the future. First Row, left to right: Frances Curtis, Marie Ashburn, MarionDodd, Dot Brady, Bertal Faye Potts, Betty Tappan, Virginia White. Third Row: Thomas Hawkins, Clcfcence Mcllwain, Roy Gray, Bill Guthrie, J. R. Von Kanel, Douglas Hill, Jodean Clark, John Schaufhauser, Coach Howard Powers. The Papooses had a very rough season due to many injuries. They just couldn't get started until too late to do any good. Here on this team we find some very good material for the future Indian teams. They had very good coaching by Mr. Howard Powers, but failed to find the scoring punch until late in the seoson. These boys worked hard and those who earned jackets really deserved them.
