History of C lass In the year of 1958, 145 eager eyed and determined freshmen enrolled on July 18, at Central High School. We held out first class meeting July 27, 1958 and elected the following officers: Tommie Allen, president; Harvey Collier, vice president; Alice Wright, secretary; Joseph Triplet, assistant secretary; Barbara Pittman, treasurer; Juel Cooper, reporter; Joyce Henderson and Wanda Wilson were elected as members of the Student Council. Our sponsors were Miss Gunnels, Miss Brooks, Mr. Gregory, and Mr. Johnson. During this year we gave an assembly for Thanksgiving, Freshman-Sophognore Ball, with good co-operation from the soph- omores. Wanda Wilson was awarded Miss Freshman, Joyce Hen- derson was our queen attendant fot the homecoming activities. Juel Cooper was representative at the National N.H.A. Con- vention in Atlanta, Georgia. Paul Franks, Sidney Walker, and James Boone were members of the basketball team. Dorothy Williams, Wanda Wilson, Juel Cooper, Tommie Allen and George Townes and Clifton Jones were choosen as represen- tatives from the fteshman class to go to Lilboum to take a sch- oolastic test. Juel Cooper and George Townes received certifi- cates for making outstanding grades on the test. As a school closing activity we had a class picnic. In the year of 1959 we enrolled as sophomores, or rather part of us. We had decreased from 145 to 87. Our officers were: Tommie Allen, president; George Townes, vice president; Doto- thy Williams, secretary; Dorothy Huffman, assistant secretary- Clifton Jones, treasurer; John jennings, parliamentarian;Wanda Wilson, historian. Our Student Council members remained the same, Joyce Henderson and Wanda Wilson. We still had Miss Gunnels and Mr. Johnson as sponsors along with Mr. Jason. This year's queen attendant was Wanda Wilson. With cooperation from the freshmen we were again able to have a Freshman-Sophomore Ball, which carried the theme of Beatniks In Paradise. We gave an assembly in the honor of Negro History Week. We sponsored a basketball and volly ball tournament with the help of Coach Smith and the cooperation of the various high departments. We still held out three ball play- ers, Paul Franks, Sidney, and James Boone. Paul Franks was Captain of the B team. Juel Cooper and Joyce Henderson won a second place Trophy in the annual Delta Jabberwack doing an oriental dance. As a member of the 4-H Club, Wanda Wilson won the 4-H Key award along with a 350 bond. She was elected al- ternate candidate to the National Camp in Washington, D. C., and was also elected state secretary at the annual short course in jeffetson City. In 1960, eighty-five of us enrolled as Juniors. officers were Tommie Allen, ptesident; George Towns, vice pres- Our class ident; Dotothy Huffman, secretary; Dotothy Williams, assistant secretary; John D. Jennings, treasurer; Clifton Jones,parliamen- tatian and Wanda Wilson, historian. Our class sponsors were, again. Miss Gunnels. who has now married and is Mrs. Kilgote, and Mr. Johnson. Our Student Council members for this year were Joyce Henderson, Dorothy Lee, George Towns, and Minnie White. For our school activities this year we sponsored a social, plate lunch, Junior and Senior Prom with the theme bf Starlight Sonata; the Al Jackson Combo rendered the music. We also gave an assembly in the honor of George Washington's birthday. Joyce Henderson, Dotothy Huffman, Wanda Wilson, Juel Coo- per, Rosette Faulkner, Lucille Mason, Maggie Mister and Dorothy Williams formed and organized themselves into a paper club call- ed The Gazetts. They published the school paper. Joyce Henderson, Dotothy Huffman, Juel Cooper, Wanda Wil- son and Mary Pride were chosen from the Junior class to repre- sent the American Legion Auxiliary in Girl's State at the Stephen College in Columbia. Dotothy Williams was elected Miss Central and Rosette Faulkner as her attendant from the Junior class. Joyce Henderson, Juel Cooper, Wanda Wilson, Tommie Allen and Paul Franks were active members of the Dramatic Club under the supervision of Mr. Kilgote. Wanda Wilson received a gold metal for being an outstanding member of the Dramatic Club. Clifton Jones received three gold metals for outstanding work in agriculture. We have been fortunate enough to have the same cooperative and understanding sponsors throughout the four years, Mrs. Kilgote and Mr. Johnson. Dorothy Lee was queen attendant for the homecoming activities. Our class activities consisted of an assembly and a talent show. Wanda Wilson is still working with the 4-H Club. At the ann- ual short course she was chosen to appear on television in Co- lumbia as a representative from the State 4-H Club. She has also received the position and honor as Queen of the 4-H Club. Clifton Jones, John Dale Jennings, and James Chillers were deligates to the State F. F. A. Convention at Missouri U. in Columbia. Fifty-two of us have proudly finished the one big step we started in 1958. Yes, the class of 1962 has made history throughout its high school career and will strive to make more in the coming years. Let this be a challenge to classes in the future to do a bigger andz better job. iots.
