E922 V9 mn crm Q The llttle lnsh scholar gentleman and prlest who wrote the words has been these last years a mlssxonary m the Pl-nllppmes At the close of the smgmg of the song the audxence swarmed upon the stage each family seeking its swan or nts ugly duckllng hndden under masses of Floral trophies Such had been Class Day nn the Old Hugh School but when graduatron night arrived we never called rt Commencement then gone were all the frnvolntres of qulp and jest The stage was decorated mainly by the Class the glrls m elaborate whlte costumes with long trams white knd gloves elegant COIHLIYCS alternatlng with the boys m new black sults the material of whlch had been ordered ln some cases from New York after anxlous consultation over samples with sympathetic teachers On the left sat the entlre Board of Education the gentlemen lookmg on the warm une evenmg anythmg but at ease m thelr dress suxts Before the Presndent of the Board rose the barrncade of the diplomas The teachers occupled seats upon the platform and the Prmclpal stood our master of ceremonies The program consisted of elght or ten orlgmal essays and oratlons cle llvered by students chosen by the most careful and complicated system that the teachers could devlse The subjects ranged through the whole ganut of human history and experience from the C-arden of Eden to the year 2000 and the gray headed men and women ln the audience smiled as thelr young Ferdmands and Mlrandas exclalmed ln many differing keys That has such people ln ntl And somewhat tearfully to themselves Father and Mother murmured TIS new to thee The Salutatorlan xn chorcest Latin halled and saluted all the groups ln turn never fanlmg to call forth a laugh from the dare devxl umors rn the house when she lt was invariably a she addressed the Board wrth the words Patres potentlsslml gravlsslml et renereudlslml The essaylsts and orators sand thexr parts and finally the Valedlctorlan ln her small volce said her vale and the Prmclpal signaled the Class to stand After a few words of kmdly advice and more feeling than hxs pupils had been wont to attribute to hlm he handed them over to the President of the Board who made a long speech that no one ever heard save those m the front row on the stage and no one ever understood but the Salutatorlan and Vale dlctorlan The evening ended wrth the bestowal of the diplomas and the recep txon of their frxends by the Class and so again the old school sent out its quota of young men and women to show the generations how the world should be run Has the spirit of Central changed vou ask3 We thlnk not true The old order changeth yleldmg place to new but the spmt the enthusrasm the tradltnon the soul what you will stxll sends over thus whole wxde world these eager young creatures of ours ready to try all thmgs and at last to hold fast to that whxch rs good Mary Jeannette Newson P1 ' . s 59 . 5922 Q9 THE Clilll 0 1922 GRADUATION Graduation in l882l Was It different from the important occasion of today3 Was it as satisfactory as dignified as ln terestmg3 How can we answer those questions we who remember with throb bmg hearts the all absorbing mterest ln that last week of school'9 The season une and the old As sembly Hall at Tenth and Minnesota was gay with buntlng and flags and early sum mer flowers and redolent with the spicy smell of tamarack when a proud and happy band of thirty or forty asplrants received their diplomas from the hands of the city s pompous Board of Education A day or two previous a Class Day program had presented the prettiest and the wittiest in the Class poem the Class History the Class prophecy The size of the class had made xt possible to pay tribute to every member by name and to map out his future for all the world to know Each Senior was presented with a souvenir considered appropriate to his character accompanied by poetic com positions that certamly foretold the com mg of the new movement m poe ry vers donor did not hesitate to make pointed UMASS KNIFE Jckes at the expense of his lrienus and when the last will and testament of the Class was brought forward with all the legal dignity that the ceremony demanded the imposing document with its length of five yards and its red seals mspired terror tempered with mirth m the hearts of the lower class men who listened eagerly for their behests Many pieces of personal property were bestowed upon the heirs the spoon that stirred the most awful mess the class was ever in the reading desk the mourner s bench the privilege strictly a semor one of gomg to the nelgh boring soda fountain in school hours the honor of advising the Faculty as to the running of the school and always last to the umors was given the knife This custom of the bestowal of the knife is one of the oldest of Cen tral s traditions originating in 1884 after a prolonged warfare of three years between the Seniors and umors The mellowmg influences of departure from the beloved halls induced the Class of ISB4 to bury the hatchet ln glowing colors and to hand the knife on to the umors to enable them to cut their way through the thorny barriers of the Senior year The writing of the class song was sometimes given to a umor and the author of this article had the honor of writing the first class song used in the school Such doggerel as it was' ln later years the song was set to some familiar tune as m ISS6 when Paddy Duffy s Cart furnished the melody lug K .
