The band, shown here taking first place in the State Fair Day contest, played often for Central and for Oklahoma City. The Student Council this year sponsored elec- tions based on thc national voting plan. Pictured here are registered voters practicing to be full-fledged citizens. Npt shown here, but bringing dis- tinction to Central by their activities, were United States Senator Mike Mon- roney, member of a state championship football team when he attended Centralg United States Congressman john Iar- man, national speech winner when he was a student hereg Dr. William Spencer, chosen by the National Iunior Chamber of Commerce as one of America's ten outstanding young men in 19545 Mrs. Margaret Redding Latrobe, whose syndi- cated column appears in twenty-seven newspapersg Mrs. Mildred Nichols Sch- roeder, who is now touring Europe as one of six holders of national Reid scholarships in journalismg and Ronnie Hill, holder of a Rotary International scholarship, who is now studying at Edinburgh University, preparing to be- come an agricultural missionary. These former Centralites have brought much favorable publicity to their Alma Mater. -4. IN '55 The Central choir made many appear- ances both in school and before civic groups. The activity shown here, singing Christmas carols in front of the school, attracted many passers-hy as listeners. The Cards arrived this year with the able assistance of such teachers as Mrs. Gladys Been, who in 1954 acquired her second Master's degree, Mr. Lewis Eu- banks, who in 1954 was named Okla- homa's Coach of the Year, and Miss May- belle Conger, only teacher in the country to have two students in the finals of the national speech contests in 1954. The Cards arrived in 1955 also he- cause of the individual eforts of many students. Wayne Hensley, Student Council president, was also a junior Ro- tarian, governor of Boys' State in 1954, one of Oklahoma's two representatives to Boys' Nation the same year, state speech winner, and national speech final- ist. Nadine Holyfield, only a junior this year, has already made a name for her- self in Oklahoma City music circles, and is a state winner in flute contests. johnny Pennington has three times been chosen to occupy the position of first chair in the trombone section of the state high school massed concert hand. ,si at I' 4- -fl Y my 1 Hail, Alma Mater! They enroll students, give personal guidance, help students with financial, school, job, and home problems, sdpervise the testing programs, keep account of all the students' credits, are in charge of the clinics, provide vocational guid- ance, aid in job placement, and do a hundred other valuable services. They are, in general, one of the biggest assets a student can have around Central. MRS. GLADYS BEEN B.A., M.A., M.Ed. -10. EENTIIAI. Central High School is proud of its modern cafeteria, which is the training ground for workers all over the city. Our cafeteria staff this year was under the management of Mrs. Ester Jentry first semester and Mrs. Alcy Goldsmith second semester. These women planned and pre- pared nutritious meals which were served in both the students' and teachers' lunch rooms. The students and faculty members Wish to thank these people for their fine service and friendly attitudes. Among the hardest working groups at Central are the custodians. These men keep our halls, rooms, and grounds clean, and lend a helping hand when needed. In the summer, custodians from other city schools attend a training school at Central. Carl Permenter was chosen the friendliest custodian at Central last year during friendship week. Mr. Grover Jenks has been head custodian at Central for the last twelve years. SE Illll PLAY Dorsey Douglas and Donna Eastwood offer their daughter , Myra Reed, a little coaching on broken-field running. Kay Coleman and Lynne Scott are dis- gusted with the tomboy antics of their classmate, Myra Reed. ,f 1 F n Time Out for Ginger is a happy occasion. It is the kind of comedy that brings a warmhearted glow to the audience. A prosperous and proper small town banker, Mr. Carol, has a weakness for giving public speeches. In a talk before the high school students, he says, Nobody should have to do what he doesn't want to. Therefore, when his teenage tomboy daughter Ginger desires to try out for the football team, Mr. Carol must back her up. Ginger's picture adorns the cover of LIFE magazine, the town receives undesired publicity, and the bank directors wonder about the propriety of having Mr. Carol represent their conser- vative New England bank. The results are hilarious. The complete cast of Time Out for Ginger is shown here. On the back row are Bill Stone, high school prin- cipal, Loretta Hendrickson, maid, Stephen Carleton, banker, Sid Blott, high school boy, and Kay Coleman, sister of Ginger. On the front row are Lynne Scott, another sister of Ginger, Dorsey Douglas, her father, Myra Reed, Ginger herself, Gary West, her boy friend, and Donna Eastwood, her mother. IQ Mr. Paul Ringler, sponsor, Gail Turner, secretary, first semester, Miss Helen Allison, sponsor, Vickie Goodgion, yell leader, first semester, secretary, treasurer, second semester. Ellen Albert typifies the Central students who are assigned regularly to assist in the office. The switchboard is only one of the many duties they handle efficiently. Robert Rickey, Exchange Club's Boy of the Month for February, 195 5, represents the well- rounded type of student who takes part in activities of all sorts, and stands high in scholarship as well as in athletics and in organi- lations. This class worked with the juniors on a quite important thing- The choosing, for all future time, of Central's senior ring. vwir 1 , ip ggi s, 5 .Q f is ho ,,,., Bellows from fellows: The Sophomore Trio, Jimmy Reese, Joe Apostol falso vice-president of the classj, and Alan Crockett, sing for an assembly. Famous last words: Short burr, please! Don Birmingham and Ed Stubblefield demonstrate the ability of sophomores to succeed in the trades classes. -46- III-' '57 The sophomores cheered as Bennie was a starter on the team 5 Two sophomores twirled for Central's band, and they were on the beam! They took part in assemblies, in the Follies, and in clubs, If they eouldn't make the first teams, they supplied a lot of subs! Central, jinxed by fumbles, dropped the in- itial tilt of the '54-'55 season to the Blackwell Maroons, 27 to 7. Blackwell pushed across three unearned TD's set up by three Cardinal fumbles in the first quarter. The Cards then held the Maroons until late in the third quarter, when they allowed Blackwell to complete a 30-yard pass. Central's only score came in the fourth quarter on a double reverse to Willis Warden. Warden scored three touchdowns to lead the Cardinals to their only victory of the '54-'55 season, over the Northeast Vikings. Central's Redbirds took the opening kickoff and were driving toward Viking territory when they fumbled. Later Northeast capitalized on this mistake and scored first. The fighting Cards came from behind on a 71-yard drive sparked by two of Terry Hoipkemier's passes to conquer the hard luck Northeast crew. The John Marshall Bears squeaked by the Cen- tral Cardinals in a close battle fought at Taft Stadium before 2,000 fans. The score was 0 to 0 through the third quarter, but in the last stanza the Bears took advantage of three Cardinal errors to score three tallies. On yardage gained and first downs this game was tighter than the score showed, and the Cards were fighting all the way. The Norman Tigers came back late in the fourth quarter to tie Central in a hard-fought mudder at Taft Stadium. The score was 12 to 12 at half-time, but the Cards jumped to a 19 to 12 lead early in the third period. Here the Cards' defense faltered, and the Tigers kept grinding out yards. -57- Enid outran Central 26 to 7 in an offensive battle on Enid's home field. The Plainsmen came back in the second half to score three more touchdowns, two in the third period and one in the fourth period. The Cards' lone score came late in the fourth quarter. Central lost the big game of the sason to Clas- sen before 4,400 fans at Taft Stadium. The score was 13-0 at halftime, but the Cards' defense fell through in the second half and let Classen score 28 points. The Central team never stopped fight- ing because the Cards wanted to win this game more than any other game this year. Central was in scoring position twice, but the downs ran out, and the ball went over to the Comets. An outmanned Central squad absorbed a 51 to 0 drubbing at the hands of the Capitol Hill Redskins on Central's home field. The fighting Cardinals, although never in the game, refused to quit trying. Capitol Hill's powerhouse dom- inated the entire game and turned duties over to their reserves late in the fourth quarter. The Shawnee Wolves edged Central 13 to 7 in a Mid-State battle fought on Shawnee's home field. The score was knotted 7 to 7 at half-time, but the Wolves came back to score the clincher early in the third period aided by two fifteen- yard penalties against Central. Larry Wilder's reception of a 40-yard pass thrown by Robert Taylor was the most spectacular play of the game. The Cards dropped a 27 to 14 decision to St. Gregory's Knights in the season's finale at Taft Stadium. DARRELL REESL senior SID BLOTT senior Dx., 1 . The Cardinals, though shorter than most of their opponents, fought enthusiastically throughout the season. Regulars on this year's team were seniors Jim Blake and Gary Dobson, juniors Reece Burch and Robert Rickey, and sophomore Benny Morgan. Bench support was handled by Willis Warden, Darrell Reese, Dennis de Freese, Jerry Price, Cas- ton Christian, Bill Hollenbeck, and Tony Work- man. Much credit is due Coach Roberts as he worked strenuously keeping the boys in shape and teaching them new tactics. Central played its most outstanding game against Classen. This one, played on the OHS Overtime .-601 B SKETBALL KA At WILLIS WARDEN cillllfllg xvnmr 'Af My lk- at DARRELL REESE I:0l'1l'llY'1l: senior' maples, was a see-saw battle through to the last buzzer, but the Cards went down to a heart- breaking defeat, losing 28-24. Another spine- tingling game was with John Marshallg the Cards were out in front one point when the final buzzer sounded, but as the horn went off, a foul was called against Central, and Marshall made both free shots, rhus downing the Redbirds 60-59. The l9'i4-'55 season is one to be remembered, even though the team did not break into the win column very often. Small but enthusiastically loyal crowds lent pep support from the stands, both at home and at games away, and pushed the Cards through a hard luck season with much hope for next year. ,,61,. The Student Council is a body of students rep- resenting every club, organization, and home room in the school. These students meet as a daily class to discuss and to try to solve the many problems of the school. Under the capable sponsorship of Miss Ber- niece Wester and Mr. Jim Johnson, the council had a talent show, sent delegates to the State, Regional, and National Student Council meet- ings, organized the school elections on the basis of the national elections, sponsored a Big Bro- ther-Big Sister program, and derived revenue from the jukebox in the cafeteria. The day-to-day work of the Council seemed of little significance to the members, but at the end of the year when they looked back upon their work, they realized that all the little things put together amounted to a great deal in helping to run our great high school. The final event of the year for the council was the annual spring picnic honoring the seniors. -63- T IIUU IIII. ,s vs- C' h B b Lashbrook Jacqueline Foster. The Biltmore Civic Room was the place of their annual Christ- mas formal dance. Black Skirts contributed very much this month by helping with the March of Dimes. FEBRUARY MARCH APRIL MAY During the basketball season, the Black Skirts did more than their share to support the games. The group rehearsed all this month for the Cardinal Follies which took place April 1. Also, Beverly Harkins was crowned Central Band Queen. The club had their annual Spring formal dance at the Civic Room. Black Skirts helped support the Cardinal baseball team so they could play as well as they did last year when they took second in the state. 1721 1 PEP EI. '-7 1' , X MUSIII DEPARTMENT EVA LEE Vocal M usic Musical organizations play a vital part at Central. The Cardinal Follies, fheld after the '55 yearbook went to press, and too late to be pic- tured in the bookj, an ambitious undertaking, was presented by the combined efforts of the musical organizations. Another joint effort was the sale of Christmas trees, still another was the pancake supper served before the Northeast basketball game. This year the eighty-piece band marched in civic parades, played for football and basketball games, and gave two concerts. Mr. Leonard Haug, director of the O. U. band, presented the sweaters to seniors who had earned sufficient points. The band took first at the State Fair Day contest, first at the Midwest City contest, and second at the O. U. Band Day contest. The band, organized in 1910, has won many trophies for Central. The choir sang in several assemblies and performed before civic groups. The members stood at the front door of the school and sang carols during the week preceding Christmas va- cation, for passers-by on their way to work. The traditional carolling in the halls one day before the holidays was enjoyed by all Centralites. Mr. Lara Hoggard, nationally known conductor, di- rected a city-Wide chorus in which the choir took JACK IRWIN Instrumental Music part. Six choir members also attended the vocal music clinic at O. U. Twenty members attended the choir festival at A. and M. The Drum and Bugle Corps practiced all summer, with the band, and made an impressive appearance at their first fall showing, the All- State football game. The girls marched in pa- rades, performed in half-time exhibitions at football and basketball games, and were guests at the State Band contest held in Midwest City, where they put on an exhibition. Virginia Doh- erty, candidate for Fun Night Queen, was elect- ed when the corps outsold the other musical or- ganizations in ticket sales. The girls broke all existing Central records in sales of magazine subscriptions. Proceeds helped to buy new hats and plumes, which were proudly Worn for the first time at the last home basketball game. The corps had .drive in 'SSI The Drill Team did the best work in their his- tory during the 1954-'55 season. Their forma- tions were more intricate, and were performed with greater precision. Summer practice and hours of drill paid off in a very fine showing at each public performance. The uniform jackets, an innovation in 1955, were first displayed in March. Youngest of the instrumental music or- ganizations at Central, the Drill Team members were alive in '55! ..78.. This event was held in the back yard, by a huge open fire. The second entertainment of the year was the annual stag banquet, held in a local restaurant. This affair always attracts former members, alumni like to keep in touch with Cen- tral and with the Cices. Ciceronians, organized in 1911, is one of the oldest clubs, having been continuously active AWN since the present building was constructed. The purpose of the club is to promote speech activities and to develop friendship and leadership. Friend- ly QU contests are held between Cices and Jeffsg these debates and forensic meets are part of the tradition that makes Central what it is. Wade Walker, Jack Hall, and Mr. M. V. The club has meant a lot to me. Pm sure it does to you. How is Miss Chowning? If there is any one person responsible for the success of the Jeffs as a debating society and for the fine record of service to Central, it is most certainly she. Miss Q Chowning is one of the most conscientious club , ' sponsors I have ever known. She would never allow us to deviate from any of the fine ideals of the society, and would keep our minds fixed on 2 ' , ' the important business at hand. pk' Are you boys still close friends? I believe that I the best friend you can have is a Jeff. The mem- bership has always included school leaders who are intelligent, dependable, and industrious. Let me know how you get along in the Jeff- Cice debate. Sincerely, Robert Bell, '54 P.S. Heard you're sponsoring a new debate club for girls. Good going! Masquers, an honorary speech club for boys, was founded in 1938 and is sponsored by Miss Maybelle Conger. Its chief purpose is to further and develop in- terest in speech. The members are chosen twice a year and are announced each spring at the annual Masquers assembly. This year for the first time since the club was founded the boys chose a sweetheart. Also, in- stead of the traditionally all-male assembly, a play was given by Masquers and the sister organ- ization, Golden Key. Richard Sells, Stephen Carleton, and J. D. The new members, announced each spring at the annual awards assembly, are chosen by a faculty committee for their outstanding work and speech ability. The purpose of Les Beaux Arts is to promote the appreciation of art among Central students. Membership is based on interest in art, and any Central student is eligible. After prospective members have spent six weeks in getting ac- quainted with the club program, they are form- ally initiated. As many phases of art as possible are included in the annual assembly which is the main project of the club. Members design and make the scen- ery, write the script, and provide all the enter- tainment. This year's assembly, entitled Fant- asy , which depicted a child's dreams, was presented in January. Truly arriving in '55, the Central High Science Club is the youngest club in school, hav- ing been organized in February, 1955. Its mem- bership immediately rose to thirty-two enthus- iastic people, validly interested in science, and realizing the advantages of a group effort and the enjoyment of learning together. Supporting the Oklahoma Science Fair, helping to supply a planetarium for the young people of this area, and becoming affiliated with the National Sci- ence Club of America and the Future Scientists of America are only a few of the projects which seem to offer a bright and prosperous future for the group. To obtain membership in this club one must have a B average if a senior and an A minus average if a junior. Members are chosen by a faculty committee for character, scholarship, leadership, and service to the school. This year's group did much for Central in many ways, one was selling school supplies. Members were thus providing a convenience for Central's students as well as making money for Golden O's and honor roll awards for club mem- bers. All films shown at the school are scheduled through Mr. Standridge. The film library at the Board of Education Building is extensive, and films from the O. U. extension service are also used. A three-year course in barber trade is offered at Central for boys who do not intend going to college. They study one hour a day as sophomores and three hours a day as seniors. Their services are offered to students and faculty members for a nominal sum. The course is the equivalent in hours of a bar- ber college course, offered commercially, but the advantage of Central's class is that a student while studying his vocation is also acquiring his high school diploma. Activities this year have included a picnic in October, a hayrack ride in January, T and I Field Day in Clinton, Oklahoma, a field trip through Tinker Field, and T and I Field trials in April at the State Fair grounds. Also, contests, banquets, exhibits, and a dance have been en- joyed. This club, comparatively new to Central, has made a fine record and well represents a large percentage of the Cards, many of whom are enrolled in trade classes. -102- - INDUSTHI L CLUB i Bark Row: Lawrence Cooley, Dwaine Black, John Gordon, Leroy Long, Johnny Hendrickson, Mr. James McGuckin. Love makes the world go 'round. Junior Red Cross makes love go 'round the world! ii' Boys and girls in Junior Red Cross are mod- ern Columbus-es. Their gifts go to far places of the world on voyages of discovery, taking with them messages of goodwill and friendshipfm Central made her contribution to humanity this year too. By signing cards saying that they were Willing to give service to their community, to their nation, and to the world, all students be- came members of Junior Red Cross. Through this organization, the boys in the trades classes repaired television sets for hospi- tals, and made a big gift chest out of materials they paid for themselves. The chest, decorated by the commercial art class, was filled with health, educational, and recreational supplies for a class- room in Europe. ' Central's chapter also took programs to the V. A. Hospital and to the County Home for the Aged, and went carolling at the Chritsmas sea- son. This year the paper has a new spon- sor, Mr. Jim Johnson. With the help of the printing and photography classes, the Sooner Spirit is published every two weeks and is sold on a subscription basis. Mr. Ralph Miller has charge of the business staff and layouts. Mr. J. D. Win- bray and the photography department take all of the pictures for the book except the fac- ulty and class shots. Mr. Paul Ringler directs all of the book's art work and assists with lay- outs. The high point of this year's activities was the N. S. P. A. convention held in Minneapolis during August. This meeting was attended by nine staff members, who acquired many new and interesting ideas concerning design and copy, and who enjoyed meeting young people from all over our country. The group also enjoyed a two-day tour by bus of points of in- terest in Minnesota, including the World's lar- gest open pit iron mine. A special coach on the train took forty students and seven sponsors, from seven high schools in Oklahoma, to this convention. The staffmembers also enjoyed several social events, including informal initiation, Thanks- giving dinner, an Easter party, and the annual yearbook-signing party. One of the most beau- tiful of the year's assemblies is, traditionally, the yearbook assembly, featuring the coro- nation of the Cardinal Queen, and presenting some of the best talent the school has to offer. At the close of the assembly, students line up to receive the yearbooks on which the staff has spent so many hectic but interesting hours, and so much effort. 41 Dave Pavey, photographer, Mr. J. D. UBS Senior honors, achieved for ser- vice to Central. were gained by vote of the winners' classmates or by selection of a faculty commit- tee. City officers, Junior Rotari- ans, and career conference dele- gates share their honors with stu- dents from other city high schools. Instead of following the custom practiced by most schools, of im- porting name speakers for Com- mencement, Central seniors have, for years, preferred to choose four of their own fellow classmates to represent them in this activity. Consequently, the four Winners of this honor have a unique distinc- tion in the city. Qi Representing Central at the annual career confer- ence held at the Univerity of Oklahoma were Barbara Haines and Billy Don Rogers, who were selected by the counsellors. --1 20- Since the first presentation of the Letzeiser awards in 1914, at Central, they have continued to represent the highest standard of achieve- ment possible to Central stu- dents. To be chosen, the win- ners, three boys and three girls, must have attended Central for six complete se- mesters, and must excel in scholarship, citizenship, char- acter, leadership, contribu- tions to the school, and par- ticipation in school activities. My heart was filled with memories And spirit that will not die. The years go fast at Central, The golden years, the gay, And Alma Mater's eyes look down On careless kids at play. But graduation's rolled around 5 Weive put our books away. We've left the peaceful building, Athletics, teachers, all, The well-kept lawns of Central, For now our futures call. We've left our youth behind us, To see what next befall. We've said goodbye to Central, To sweethearts and to friends. Weive sung our Alma Mater, But now school days must end. God lead you down the long road To success around the bend. SID BLOTT fWith apologies to Winfred M.
