The Georgs Edward Marshall Gymnasium . . . through the campus 6 Harold J. Williams, Superintendent of Schools Admini Congratulations to the Rlackhawk staff, spon- sors, and to all members of the 1954 graduating class of Davenport High School. High school graduation is a big step. Much of what you do in the future will be deter- mined by your high school experiences. If you have learned how to study, to work with others, and to assume responsibility, you have good promise of success. If in addition you have developed a healthy body with moral and spiritual fiber, you are destined for leadership in your community. The class of 1954 has great possibilities. We hope and pray that each of you may enjoy the full measure of your abilities. Life will be full of opportunities for you. Be sure you accept those which will bring credit to you, your family, and your school. My best wishes to each of you. Superintendent of Schools Tha Administrative and Supervisory Staff. Superin- tendent Harold J. Williams. L E. Wats. Industrial and Adult Education Director; Leslie C. Goss, Director of Purchasing and Mainten- ance; and J. E. Baumgartner, Secretary and Comptroller. 8 ration Graduates of 1954: There are some events during each school year that enable us to remember a particular year for a long time. I suspect that you seniors will remember this school year as the one when the new concrete stands for 5000 persons and the dressing rooms were built at Brady Street Field, when Davenport High School was selected by Life magazine as an outstanding example of a good comprehensive public high school, and the year when the big “bulge” started in senior high school enrollment. In addition, I trust that you will remember with real pleasure and satisfaction many of the social events and the stimulating academic ex- periences in which you participated during 1953 - 1954. I trust that this has been a splendid year for each of you and you feel that Davenport High School has served you well. Congratulations and best wishes, Rogor Borry, Principal The Board of Education shown seated around the conference table are Mrs. Rhea Cornelius, Mr. Wal- ter Vieth, Mr. Les Jones, Superintendent Harold J. Williams, President Rich- ard LeBuhn, Mr. John G. Baumgartner, Mr. John Burrows, Mr. Albert Block and Mr. W. W. Brubaker. Don L Hampstead, Assistant Principal Don L. Hempstead, assistant principal of Davenport High School, in co-operation with Mr. Berry, lends a helping hand in solving both problems of the administration and of the student body. Mr. Hempstead’s duties are many. Acting as Director of the Cuidancc and Counseling De- partment, advising the Student Council, and serving as chairman in charge of the Study Halls, are only a few of the many tasks which he so ably performs. Nine teachers comprise the counseling staff who, under his direction, assist the student body in every possible way. All matters of atten- dance, scholastic and social curriculum, and personal problems of the students are given their individual attention. Miss Jeanette Keppy is secretary of the coun- seling office. The Counseling Staff. Seated are Miss Elizabeth Schaller, Miss Mabel Johnstone, Miss Lucille Burianelc, and Miss Jeanette Keppy, secretary of the Counseling Office. Standing are Allen Slickers. Paul B. Still, Miss Joan MacDonald, Lawrence B. Kenyon, Miss Pauline Cotter, and Harvey H. Voris. 10 Miss Leona Sochrcn, Dean of Students, serves as counselor and friend to all members of the student body. When students of DHS need advice or simply wish to discuss their problems, whether they be those of the present or the future, Miss Sochren is the one to whom they invariably turn. Miss Soehren serves as the senior advisor, supervisor of college placement, and chaperones all of the social functions of Davenport High School. She is a member of the counseling staff and ranks next to Mr. Berry and Mr. Hempstead in offering counsel to the students. Mitt Leona L. Soehren, Dean of Students Tho Activitiet Office Staff. This year the Student Council created more committees to remedy school prob- lems. Among these were the traffic com- mittee, which tried to better the rush-hour situation at 12th and Main streets, pep committee, which sponsored the home room cheer contest and planned many of the auds. The Council again collected the Annual Naumann Fund and also helped with the Athletic Club Skating Party. If any reminder of high school days has become a traditional and treasured keepsake through the passing years, it has been the an- nual Blackhawk yearbook. This photographic essay of DHS life began to formulate in the minds of the editors and advisors even last summer. It grew through the school days until it is now a completed record of the past year. But after the yearbook is fin- ished, despite all the hard work or headaches, the entire staff is still grateful for the opportunity of making such a record possible. Surveying one of the products of their combined efforts are Picture Editors Signe Poison and Gary Benshoof. YEARBOOK record for posterity An item of financial importance arises for Corrine Roehlk, businoss manager, Judie Wagner, assistant annual editor, and Miss Shirley Fries, publications advisor, to solve. Pictures galore confront the senior editors: Marsha Brubaker, Doris Lamp, and Sherry Little. Concerned about their respective deadlines, Marge Wall, club editor, copyreads a list of names with her assistant, Barb Culp; Stu Stone, sports editor, shows last year's section to Lee Crawford, assistant sports editor; and Carol Knight, activities editor, discusses a layout with Judy Hartman, her assistant. 75 Alterations lead BLACKHAWK Folding papers is a bi-weekly task hero performed by Judy Lipsman, picture ed- itor, Carol Knight, feature editor, Gary Benshoof, staff photographer, and Miss Shirley Fries, editorial advisor. The ad staff drums up some business: Dave Simkins, Larry Loving, Jack Wise. Ad Manager Bill Hart, and Keith Munro. Barb Culp, second semester news editor, listens to the instructions of her prede- cessor, Charlene Groth; while Corrine Roehlk, first semester business manager, gives a few tips to Sylvia Adams, business manager for the second semester. Editor-in-chief Kathryn Kealey looks up from ono of her many duties long enough to smile for the candid camera. 76 NEWSPAPER to improved style As the events of the year pass by the Blackhawk newspaper records them all and presents the facts and features in an interesting journalistic way. The headquarters of the staff is the Blackhawk Office, known for its bustle and constant peck of typewriter keys, snipping of scis- sors, scratching of pencils, rustling of paper, and flow of conversation. The room is equipped with eight steel desks, built-in typewriters, filing cabinet, seven editors, and one advisor. There are sixteen issues of the paper, published bi- weekly throughout the year. SMS Reporter discus their assignments: Marian Postel, Lee Crawford. Marge Wall, Stu Gord, Emily Conklin, Connie Hurt, Dick Johannesen, Donna Cook, and John Thomas. Missing from the picture are Dick Williams, Kay Kimberly, and John Ronnebeck. Handling the mechanical end of the paper are Bill Hart, Keith Munro, Dave Simpkins, and Mr. Richard Bentley, publications advisor. Exchange Editor Betsy Browning industriously scans her file, while Circu- lation Manager Carolyn Cohrt and Stuart Stone, Sports Editor, discuss the technicalities of a recent issue of the paper. 77 Military emphasis of RO The main event in which the ROTC participates is Principal’s Day, this year held October 28. The entire cadet battalion passes in review before the principal. Major McCardell, and other important guests. This event is a fore-runner to the Federal Inspec- tion in May. The Drillmasters, the cadet drill team, this year was under the com- mand of Cadet-Lieutenant Colonel David Schricker. Both the Drillmas- ters and the 39-piece cadet band appeared for both school and outside audiences. Coach Antop (Butch) Stolfa’s 1953 grid squad compiled four wins, four losses and one tie to round out a balanced season. The Blue Devils jumped off to a moral vic- tory as they tied St. Ambrose Academy in the city title. Dick Kreiter scored the Blue Devil’s lone touchdown as he plunged over from the fifteen yard line. The conversion by Chet-Wyatt was good enough to gain a 7-7 tie with the Knights. In the Mississippi Valley Conference the Imps’ record went down on the books as three wins and two losses. The losses were to Iowa City and the Dubuque Hams. The win column showed the Blue Devil’s rolling over McKinley and Franklin of Cedar Hapids. In the home- coming game, the Imps soundly trounced the Clinton River Kings by a margin of 25 to 0. In Quad-City action the Demons slipped past Moline, but ran into very stiff opposition as East Moline ran up a score of 21 to 13. This was the last season for Paul Moon. Ix oking hack over the past 26 years nothing can be found but a fabulous record of success. Under Mr. Moon the Imps have advanced to the state finals sixteen times, and three of the seven state titles came in a row, 1950-1952. In the sub-state field, Davenport has won eight titles. They also have to their credit seventeen dis- trict crowns and fifteen sectional titles. In the Mississippi Valley Conference the Imps have been undefeated eight times, and won sixteen out of twenty-five possible league crowns. Thirteen times in twenty years the Imps have won the Quad- City crown under Mr. Moon’s guidance. The overall record of Mr. Moon, often referred to as Mr. Basketball, stands at 538 victories and 110 losses. This gives the gentleman in spats a very satisfying 83 percent with which to retire. This year the Imps tore into their schedule winning the first four games before being dumped by East Moline 58 to 54. They then won three more before they lost another to St. Ambrose, 52 to 51, in a thrilling game in which Ambrose pulled fire in the last seconds. Coach Paul Moon’s basketball squad was run- ner up in the Mississippi Valley, and also in the Quad-City competition. The Imps compiled a record of 16 wins to only six defeats during the season of play. Time out gives Moon a chance to brief the boys on the plan for action. 119 Varsity Basketball Teem. For the first time in the history of Davenport High School a wrestling team has brought this coveted title to Davenport. Co-captain Simon Roberts and Vince Garcia emerged as State champions at their respective weights of 133 and 95 pounds. Altogether Davenport placed ten men in the tournament, they were Jim Behncke, Bob Wulf, Jack Fahl, Jim Seusy, John Hennings, Morris Barnhill, Bob Ihlefeld, and Tony Rameriz in addition to Roberts and Garcia. The other Blue Devil co-captain, John Hennings, finished second in the meet. The Blue Devils lost only one dual meet during the entire season, that being to West Waterloo, who finished second in the State finals. The Imps also tied with Moline and East Waterloo. Much of the suc- cess of the team lies with their fine coaches Jim Fox and Burt Seidler. In the six short years that Coach Fox has been at Davenport he has led the Blue Devils from obscurity to the best in the state. The sophomores lost only one meet during the year, that being to Maquoketa, by the score of 21 to 20. In the thirteen dual meets that the Blue Devil grapplers participated in they accumulated a total of 379 points to their opponents 166. Dur- ing the course of the season the Imps entered a total of five tournaments winning all of them. They were victorious in the Quadrangular tournament at Rock Island, the Mississippi Val- ley Conference, the Davenport Invitational, the District tournament, and the state finals. Quite a record! Bill Meyer captured first place in the 50 yard dash and the shot put. Les Chapman won the pole vault while LeRoy Crawford won the half mile to pick up the Demons other individual firsts. At the State Indoor the Blue Devils could only produce 15% points, hut it was enough to secure a sixth place. Bill Meyer won first place in the 50 yard dash and fourth place in the shot, while Les Chapman captured first place in the pole vault. LeRoy Crawford took fifth place in the mile run while Roxy Ernsberger tied for fifth place in the 440 yard dash. Clinton was the first out door test of the year and the Demons took ten firsts to win the meet. The Imps also took first place in the Davenport Relays. Assistants to Coach Day were Coach Mike Dardis, handling the field events, and Coach Loel Fredcrick- son, who assumed the reins of the sophomore team. Serving as co-captains for the Blue Devils were returning lettermen Don Brandt and Bill Meyer. In position for the SO yard dash are Larry Priebe, Bill Meyer, Jim Bailie, and John Micheel. The boys returning from the previous year were Stuart Gord, Jim Morton, Dick Harrington, Jack Smit, Leo Behai, and Rick Beaumont. In the spring the team opened their season in a meet with Rock Island, Moline, and East Moline. In addition to the Quad-City teams they competed against Clinton, Dubuque, St. Ambrose, Iowa City, Franklin, Cedar Rapids, and played in the District and State tourna- ments.
