ANTHONY MEDAL ESSAY CONTEST LILLIAN I EASTHAM RICHARD R FAELLA Girls Prize Winner Boys Prize Winner ABOUT COMIC BOOKS By LILLIAN I EASTHAM Awarded Girls Prize in Anthony Medal Essay Contest for the Class of january 1955 Did you grow up in a normal American town or city? If you did you no doubt have read a good number of comic books the same as I Trading comic books was always a favorite pastime among boys and girls alike in my neighborhood When we first heard about the adults who were condemning comic books we thought they were old and frus trated people who were too busy to enjoy the finer things of life We could sit for almost a whole day just reading about Superman or Batman and the wonderful adventures they had After Superman and Batman we graduated to big time stories like Mad Ghoul the Witches Cavern and Vampire We always read these stories during the bright sunny mornings for the fact was that if we read them at night we had nightmares Sitting curled up on an old chair with one foot tucked under me I stayed with my girl friends a huge pile of comic books spread out carelessly all over the porch-except for the stack of books on my right That was what I intended to read before dinner As I thmk back I do not recall ever finishing one of those collections of pages and ideas When we had been called to dinner four or five times and finally gotten a good rap on our heads with one of our precious funny books we grudgmgly tore ourselves away and went in to wash for dinner As soon as we finished eatmg we were outside again in a flash acting out the characters in the books we had read During this past summer I read a newspaper story of a boy who had acted out what he had read just as I used to do It seems that he had read some inspiring Super man stories This young boy decided what he was going to do and did it He put on a cape like Superman went into a third floor closet like Superman and then leaped out the wmdow just like Superman just one thing was wrong he could not fly like Super man Instead of zooming up high over the tallest buildings he fell straight down three stories. At the hospital the Doctors said he had a fractured skull a concussion and a broken neck. Too bad that there was no real Superman around to swoop down and catch this child as he fell. I do not think that he will ever imitate Superman again that is if he ever plays again. Lately incidents like this unfortunate one have been occurring all over the United States. From my own experience I can truthfullv say that comic books are causing many of the numerous accidents that American children are having. I heartily approve not of abolishing comic books for they give a pleasure that children will always seek but of giving to our comic book people stories that will teach and stories with a moral that will' help our children grow into good American Citizens. THE VALUE OF ATHLETICS By RICHARD R. FAELLA Awarded Boys Prize in Anthony Medal Essay Contest for the Class of january 1955 A sound mind in a sound body is a statement that has been quoted many times by many people. This quotation was the code that the Greeks lived by. They knew that 24
