The realities of life will be facing us, and we shall look back upon our Alma Mater and think of the many happy hours we spent here with our teachers and friends. No longer shall we be able to seek the advice of these people who have been so close to us through our high-school years. We have been prepared. We must make the important decisions of life ourselves. At this time, many of us are thinking of the day we have all been waiting for. Let us stop a moment and consider whether this is really what we want. First of all, some of us may never see the others again. We all have had our fun and also have gone through some hard work. Most of us were happy here together. As one by one, we receive our diplomas on Graduation Day, we shall begin a new chapter in our lives. All in all, each and every one of us will be guiding our lives with the knowledge we acquired at Central. The strength of our nation depends upon us, as individuals. As the citizens of tomorrow, we are most anxious to do our part in making this world secure. W'e shall be the leadersg whether we shall live in a world of peace or war will depend largely upon the leaders we shall choose. Our classes in high school have taught us to work side by side with people of all races, creeds, and nationalities. This is one of the first steps to PEACE THROUGH EDUCATION. As we go into the world, what we have learned in CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL will always effect our decisions. Putting this edition of the BLACK AND GOLD to- gether has taken many hours of hard work and patience by teachers and pupils. We have enjoyed editing this book. and we hope that you. our readers, will be satis- fied with our efforts. We wish to thank all those who have helped the staff prepare this YEARBOOK. MacDOUGALD Although two years is not a very long time in which to become thoroughly acquainted with a school, Mr. MacDougald has accom- plished this task. He has become the one person in Central to whom we turn, whenever we need advice. At every social event held by our school, we are sure to find Mr. MacDougald present. His sincerity has won the friendship of the whole school and particularly that of the graduating class of 1955. We are happy and proud to have such a fine man as our Vice- Principal. We wish to express our thanks and appreciation to the man who has been our guide during our senior year. Xl au' h .3 R MR, ALLEN MR. GRISLEY To the graduates honored in this 1955 Black and Gold- We hope we have contributed in some small way toward the successes that you have made in Central High School and the successes that are yours to win in the coming years. It has been our increasing pleasure to help you set your goal and to help you work toward its achievement. Accept our best wishes for a happy and profitable future. MR. ALLEN - MR. GRISLEY MISS TOURTELLOT Our former counselor, Miss Celia Tourtellot, who retired at the end of our 12B term, will never be forgotten by her classes. Her understanding and cooperation in all our undertakings and her interest in her students are the fine traits that made her dear A0 to us. Our only regret is that Miss Tourtellot will not be present at the climax of our high school career, our graduation. As spokesman for all her classes, the graduating class of january 1955 would like to express our sincere thanks, gratitude, and appreciation for all of her untiring efforts. MR. HOFFMAN The Editorial Staff of the Black and Gold of 1955 wishes to speak for the student body in expressing our sincere appreciation for Mr. HotIman's continuous help in publishing our yearbook. For the last two years, Mr. Hohfman has done a remarkable job directing the students who had charge of this publication. His advice and guidance have made our book an annual, which will long be remembered. We thank you, Mr. Hoffman, for your patience and cooperation. We know that the incoming staff will enjoy working with you. -EDITORIAL STA FF it xx 1-4-35 X ' Down through time. art has helped to tell the story of mans achievements, to translate to unseeing eyes the beauty that is about him and to convey to him the message of truth. The Art Staff have attempted in this Black and Gold to aid in conveying the message of Peace through Education. It is our desire that the memories and experiences that are recalled to each of you in this yearbook may serve as beacons by which you may steer your course through troubled times to the haven of a peaceful and secure future. Marilyn Essex ANTHONY MEDAL ESSAY CONTEST LILLIAN I EASTHAM RICHARD R FAELLA Girls Prize Winner Boys Prize Winner ABOUT COMIC BOOKS By LILLIAN I EASTHAM Awarded Girls Prize in Anthony Medal Essay Contest for the Class of january 1955 Did you grow up in a normal American town or city? If you did you no doubt have read a good number of comic books the same as I Trading comic books was always a favorite pastime among boys and girls alike in my neighborhood When we first heard about the adults who were condemning comic books we thought they were old and frus trated people who were too busy to enjoy the finer things of life We could sit for almost a whole day just reading about Superman or Batman and the wonderful adventures they had After Superman and Batman we graduated to big time stories like Mad Ghoul the Witches Cavern and Vampire We always read these stories during the bright sunny mornings for the fact was that if we read them at night we had nightmares Sitting curled up on an old chair with one foot tucked under me I stayed with my girl friends a huge pile of comic books spread out carelessly all over the porch-except for the stack of books on my right That was what I intended to read before dinner As I thmk back I do not recall ever finishing one of those collections of pages and ideas When we had been called to dinner four or five times and finally gotten a good rap on our heads with one of our precious funny books we grudgmgly tore ourselves away and went in to wash for dinner As soon as we finished eatmg we were outside again in a flash acting out the characters in the books we had read During this past summer I read a newspaper story of a boy who had acted out what he had read just as I used to do It seems that he had read some inspiring Super man stories This young boy decided what he was going to do and did it He put on a cape like Superman went into a third floor closet like Superman and then leaped out the wmdow just like Superman just one thing was wrong he could not fly like Super man Instead of zooming up high over the tallest buildings he fell straight down three stories. At the hospital the Doctors said he had a fractured skull a concussion and a broken neck. Too bad that there was no real Superman around to swoop down and catch this child as he fell. I do not think that he will ever imitate Superman again that is if he ever plays again. Lately incidents like this unfortunate one have been occurring all over the United States. From my own experience I can truthfullv say that comic books are causing many of the numerous accidents that American children are having. I heartily approve not of abolishing comic books for they give a pleasure that children will always seek but of giving to our comic book people stories that will teach and stories with a moral that will' help our children grow into good American Citizens. Q K A, 51 ANTHONY MEDAL ESSAY CONTEST VIRGINIA YEREMIAN ROBERT ESTABROOK Girls Prize Winner Boys prize Winner MY PARENTS By VIRGINIA YEREMIAN Awarded Girls Prize In Anthony Medal Essay Contest for the Class of june 1955 Did you ever come home from a prom and lie In bed and go over every part of the wonderful evening In your mind? Maybe II was a football game or a skating party or just a date I am sure we all have at some time or another Who made this possible? Now that graduation IS here more of us realize how fortunate we are and have been all our lives We are very fortunate If for nothing else but being able to go through school My parents made this possible for me They are the most wonderful people In the world They never got a chance to go to school for more than two years In their lives Their school and their country were snatched away from them Their parents were killed before their eyes Their people were massacred because they were Christians and because they wanted education What would we do If our parents were taken from us? Would we have their courage? Would we still have faith In God? I wonder My parents had this faith and this courage At the ages of thirteen and fifteen they came to America to begin a new life They heard that people were good here and would help them Here you could speak and worship as you like and no one would make fun of them or laugh because they could not speak English People would teach them all the things they needed to know They prayed that this would be true and hoped they could become citizens In such a wonderful country When they arrived 10 America they found this was all very true Jobs were plentiful and In a few years they had a future to look forward to My parents could have gone to night school and had the education they wanted but they worked night and day for they wanted to have a family-children of theIr own born here In America Their children would be citizens and have an education This was all they wanted In life now This was their dream this was their future They never got the education they wanted They worked to give theIr children my sisters and I everything we could ever want I have everything I have my parents WHAT I VE LEARNED FROM THE GERMAN PEOPLE By ROBERT ESTABROOK Awarded Boys Prize in Anthony Medal Essay Contest for the Class of June 1955 Not every one has a chance to visit or even live in Ger- many. True I was there by permission of the United States Government but I was not in the military. My father Chief Warrant Officer Preston S. Estabrook was shipped to Germany with the 43rd Infantry Division in the latter part of 1951. Upon arrival he applied for per- mission to have his family with him. My three sisters my Bother my brother and I landed in Frankfurt in April of 52. Can you picture yourself in another country where the men wear leather pants and the women long black dresses and shawls? Sure there are the soldiers in the military cen- tres to practice your stateside dialect on but try to walk down a street and talk to a German that way -you will be in for a sudden shock. The majority of the American people think about the Germans as war makers and torturers. We never think for a moment that they too might go to church on Sunday or go to see their national sports or be considered normal people like us Americans. While I was there I belonged to a German sports club. We played basketball track tennis soccer and ping pong. Once in a while we would go to the Amersee to swim. Their sports equipment may not be the best, but their morale and sportsmanship rank with the highest. I once ran in a track meet in a little town named Schwab, Munchen. Being the only foreigner there, I was treated as if it was a great international meet and I was one of its guests. We from our club were invited to stay at a large farmhouse. The facilities were not the best but the people and their hospitality were tops. In the United States the people are some of the healthiest in the world. If you saw a piece of meat hanging in the window and Hies flying around it you probably would not buy it. A German housewife would see it and say- That's for me. She would cook it and have as nice a meal as you could think of. You might think some sickness would come from those poor health habits. An average German lives to be 65. They eat meat and potatoes carrots and peas and drink their coffee just as we Americans do. In many ways they are just like us. Their homelife is much different in many ways from ours. At the dining table the sons and daughters are not allowed to say anything unless spoken to by their parents. In the morning the family is awake and ready to go to work or attend school by six o'clock. The mother stays home and cleans her house until it becomes so clean you could not stain a white glove on the floor. Through strict means such as these the German family becomes a prom- inent part of their society. To better realize the purity of heart and mind and the all around goodness of the people of Germany, it would be well worth a short vacation just to visit Germany. MUSIC By JOAN BARBONL Awarded Honorable Mentnon rn Gnrls Anthony Medal Essay Contest for the Class of june I955 Musnc ns an art that ts enjoyed by everyone I have never met a person who could say that One of the longest home runs ever hit in Cranston Stadium came off the bat of our Second Baseman, Jimmy Pendergast. Wlien Dan Salzillo was on the mound, our opponents were aware that they had had a bad day at the plate. The hitting of joe Mercurio, who made the All-State team, played an important part in winning many a ball game. We finished the season with a 9-3 record and ended in second place, so we played in the State Playoffs. T' gilflli The briefing A he-fore the game. X 'JT x '-tx P 'Q f '+I , ,AH W 04, . ,1- av . , .
