Some will go to our front lines-the fighting front. Dthers will so Q stay behind to supplement the achievements of the fighting men. These graduates leave us, armed with a vital weapon --an education. Through education they are prepared to carry on the war to final victory. Through education, they are prepared to bring about a righteous and lasting peace. They are the youth upon whose success the future depends, fi ln them we place our trust, our faith, and our hopes. Words are inadequate to express our deep appreciation of the deeds of courage and sacrifice which the sons and daughters of Central are performing in our fight for Freedom. We can but look hopefully on as their numbers swell with each passing month and each graduation, wishing them Godspeed and a safe return when Peace shall again smile upon the world. From them we can take a renewed confidence in the kind of future we have learned to cherish and to hold indispensible to the happiness of mankind, The boys and girls of today are showing them- selves worthy of the men and women we expect them to be tomorrow. This thought provides a silver lining for a very dark cloud-a cloud which we earnestly hope is now its darkest before the long-awaited dawn l-IORACE l-l. l-IENDRICK Vfce-Principal The Faculty DR. T. Being aware of this fact, we as Americans should realize the necessity and importance of education for victory. Among the youth of this country are the brilliant and successful leaders of tomorrow, men who will be the emi- nent doctors, lawyers, and artists of their era. They will, without doubt, play triumphant roles as the creative spirits who will bear the burdens of progress and bring accomplishments despite the intolerance of man and the fickleness of nature, Surely the arts and sciences will benefit from these leaders, but will the human standard of living benefit accordingly? A study of man's progress will reveal the remarkable advancements which have been made as far as the arts and sciences are concerned, but what great improvements have been made in the social adjustments of man? The fact that man can participate in his own self destruc- tion is ample proof that within him there are definite so- cial maladiustments. Social leaders of this day have erected a cultural edi- fice, which if maintained solidly in a freedom loving, demo- cratic nation, will distinguish that nation from others as being an advocate of fine principles. This cultural edifice is constructed from The Four Freedoms , Freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want, and free- dom from fear, form the structure of a truly democratic nation. The task of upholding these noble principles, which may be a partial remedy for the social maladjust- ments of man, belongs to the youth of America. They must promulgate the American creed of liberty and jus- tice for all. I. I have a confession to make. I thought high school was tough, but the Navy homework and test make high school seem like grammar school. The amount we learn in four weeks of high school, the Navy gives to us in one week, We can't fail in one test, without being debarred from one week of liberties. To: Miss Gorman From: Edwin A. I-Iollien U. S. Naval Training Station Newport, R. I. One thing I shall always be glad of is that I waited until I was sure of receiving my diploma. I know that it is a very necessary thing to have. To: Miss Gorman From: Raymond Murphy U. S. Naval Training Station Sampson, New York Tell all of your pupils to stay in school until they graduate, they won't regret it. To: Mr. Bailey From: Albert Krasner Camp Croft, S. C. I imagine you are still teaching camouflage. Well, take my advice and make the fellows learn it. lt comes in mighty handy in all branches of the service, Down here, where I am, in the Heavy Weapons Divisions of the Army, we have to camouflage our tents and trenches. To: Miss McCarthy From: Vincent Comardo Room 2l has really contributed some heroes to the present conflict and one of the greatest of them all-Bill Northway-will live on in his classmates' memories forever. We hope to avenge his untimely death and I'm sure that every loyal Centralite will regard him as the symbol of democracy. To: Miss Gorman From: Private Daniel Paolino Army Air Forces Basic Training Center Greensboro, North Carolina. l suppose you will have a new class next term. If you do here's some sound advice for them. Take all the Math they can. Figuratively I could kick myself for not having heeded your advice about more mathematics. Our supposed course here is to be of five months' duration. The subjects covered will be basic and advanced mathematics, reading, Eng- lish compositionforal expression, physics, and also laboratory physics. Our English course is a concentrated course in writing themes. I'm doing extremely well in this field of composition, Tl-IE KIND OF LETTER A TEACHER LIKES TO RECEIVE Dear Miss McKenna, It's the usual custom for students to gradu- ate from high school and then forget most of their former teachers. l'Il admit l've forgotten a few, but I will also say that you will always be the outstanding teacher in my memory. I often think of you, and hope you are feeling well. Right now I am in India, and although I do not enjoy the thought of being here, I'm getting along pretty well, considering the intense heat and many bugs, etc. I'd like to let you know something of my military life but we are unable to make any reference to our work. I-Iowever, I have a nice job that is most interesting, and that I like very much, I'm anxious to get home, but I realize that won't be for a while, At least I can look forward to it, anyway! My sister was married the twentieth of September to a young Ensign in the Navy. She had been going with him prior to his entering the Service. Do you remember her? There's not much you can write in a V-Mail letter, but at least I had the chance to say hello to you across the miles. Do not feel obliged to answer this letter. I know you must be very busy. Take care and best regards ever- Sincere best wishes, Alfred M. De Augustini We should like to receive more letters like these from boys in Service. The class officers work with the school co-ordinator, Miss T. Regina O'Donnell, and committees, to manage class affairs. The Student Council, made up of these officers, is under the direction of Mr. Horace l-l. Hendrick, Vice-Principal. The Student Council furthers all school activities and programs, This year one of its main proj- ects is to promote the sale of 375,000 worth of War Bonds and Stamps. The War Thrift Council is working with the Student Council in this project. Budget Collectors and students who work in the Student Activities Office volunteer their services to make the student budget system at Central a success. For those students who are interested and talented in music, the band, the Glee Club, or the Ensembles, offer excellent opportuni- ties to further their abilities and promote their interests in that field. l-li-Y and l-li-Tri have been organized for students of high school age who wish to take part in social and civic activities at the Y. SVT tneslc elves-Ku O8 C Varsity Footballff-1943 With the opening of school, the football squad was augmented by the addition of about sixty boys, bringing the number of boys in uniform to well over one hundred. The regular season opened on September l8 against St. Raphael at Pawtucket. At first, Co- Captain Gelsomino ran wild, but on the third play of the game received a severe knee injury which at first seemed destined to end his promis- ing football career. This was a severe blow to the morale of the team, but they went on to score when Frank Little went over for six points. With less than a minute remaining in the first half, the Saints scored on a seventy-yard march that was climaxed by a touchdown, Final score: 6-6. The following Saturday, a slightly overconfi- dent team played New Bedford High School. Central evidently underrated New Bedford, who had just been trounced by Cranston. The boys never hit their stride, and lost i4-6. The league now opened, with Central facing a high-riding Cranston team. The Green Thun- derbolt marched 80 yards for a touchdown in the opening minutes of the second period, and then concentrated on defense. Two points were added when a bad pass from center sailed over the fleetfooted Arzoomanian's head into the end zone for a safety. Central then marched to Cranston's three yard line, but was stopped there. Next came East Providence with the Townies enjoying their best team in years. Central played a fine game, only to lose-i3-O. Here again Central had a first down inside the five yard stripe but was unable to hit pay dirt. A bit discouraged over defeats by Cranston and East Providence, Central met a weak but spirited Rogers team, and, playing a lackadaisical game, barely won, l3-6. Then came the big game. Central, going nowhere in particular, went gunning for the Big Maroon of La Salle. ln a cold, drizzling Armistice Day, with the Central stands filled to capacity, the Golden Tide dug in and gave La Salle its hardest game of the season. A questionable clipping penalty placed Central on its own four yard line. A fumble followed, and La Salle recovered, and then pushed the pigskin over for the only score of the game. During the second period, La Salle knocked continually, but always in vain. A more courageous mani- festation of grit has never been displayed on a gridiron than was shown by the boys in the Black and Gold. From that 6-O defeat came victory-for the Central student body for the first time this season was truly united. The entire group left the field cheering the team. This loyalty carried over into school the next day, and woe to the one who said ill of the football team. To show the public that win or lose, Central was proud of her team, one thousand students swamped old Hope Field to watch Central trounce Mt. Pleasant, 24-12. Thanksgiving morning dawned clear, and the Central student body was out en masse, again returning to Hope Field for its traditional game against Hope. The team seemed destined to continue its winning stride. Stopped once by a fumble, it was not to be denied, but rallied and scored, to lead at the half 6-O. The second half found Central still dominat- ing the field until two costly errors enabled Hope to score. Central then, apparently feeling the wear from its hard game of five days before, was unable to stop a now inspired Hope team. Score i4-6. Another season has passed. lt was a bit dis- appointing, but no alibis are to be offered. In these unsettled times, the boys gave what they thought was their best. lt wasn't enough, but nevertheless they were in there carrying on, and if the world becomes right side up again, the Golden Tide will be in there still rolling. Next year, gone but not forgotten, will be many of this year's standouts: Louis Gelsomino, John Folcarelli, Frank Little, John Kempf, Frank Russo, Al Sarcione, John Arzoomanian, Joe Sal- vadore, Paul Ricciardi, Pete Mantaian, Americo Carbone, and John Merlino. However, prospects for next season are far from gloomy for will there not be Stanley Crum, George Spirito, Dan Sarro, Sal Del Prete, Al Girard, Dick Gosseliri, Joe La Fauci, John Merlino, and all the many JOSEPH LITTLE, '45 NISHAN RUSSIAN, '45 others. 2- -d- , A,M , h i , CROSS-CQUNTRY TEAM Although the cross-country team has not scored high tor Central this year, it has proved that the boys have put every ettort into its ace lntly by going out each atternoon tor practice at Roger Williams Park and by showing good sportsmanship. The outstanding work ot the season was done by Ray McDonough, who ran second in the Coe lumbus Day Meet, second in the City Meet, and tirst in the State Meet. Emil Peterson ran tirst in the dual meet with Pawtucket East Coach Skonberg certainly deserves great credit tor his untiring ettort in helping Central's harriers Marshall hlordquist, 'flfl FOOTBALL CAMP On Sunday, August 29, TQ43, titty Central boys, under the supervision ot Mr, Bogda, Mr, Vlfebb, and Coach Kutneski, lett Point Street Bridge lor two weeks ot work at Camp Seaside, James- town, P l Arriving at camp, the boys were assigned rooms in Nonsoua Hall. At SITO, all the campers went tor a dip in the ocean to refresh themselves betore supper. The evenings were usually tree trom specitic assignments unless there were special sessions ot blackboard drill Lights out at V30 was a strictly observed rule. Although this camp is primarily tor boys who are tootball candidates, any boy attending Central may attend to specialize in swimming it he wishes, as some enthusiasts did, The cost tor going to camp is very moderate, considering transportation rates and insurance against iniuries, plus the cost ot living for two whole weeks The weekly school dances partly tinance the camp and the boys pay part ot their expenses.
