Patriotism in War and peace ATRlOTlSiVl is not just the waving of the flag and the singing of the National Anthem. lt's the believing in, trusting in, and loving of one's country. We love our country, and because there is a war being waged, we should make our patriotism obvious There were great patriots in America whose names are inscribed in the story of their times. There were many humbler folk whose names have faded from our annals There were those who were never known outside their narrow village circle, but who struggled and suffered for the noblest motives, l-lowever, war brings out the worst as well as the best in ment lt is a mistake to think of America of i776 as a nation of patriots pressing their services to gain their freedom. lt was hard to get men for the Army in those days, but as small as it was at times, those brave soldiers held the flag flying in the field through love of their country and through confidence in a real patriot, General Washington, Today, men in uniform are defending our country not only because they hate their enemies, but because they have love of their country. They will go on defending their country even after this country defeats its enemies, The love of one's nation should be in the heart at all times, during times of war or times of peace. There is one thing we must learn, and that is, that patriotism does not end when war ends. lt is only when patriotism continues that we continue to live our life of freedom, Each one of us may not be pointed out as a patriot, but in our hearts we know that our love of America will keep America's wonderful flag waving in our homes, our schools, and on the battle fronts of the world. ANTHONY FIORE On the opposite page are members of the class of January '43 who left school to enter our armed services. At eighteen, many of them are battle-scarred veterans, one of them is dead. They have helped to keep the flag flying while we were getting ready. We are proud of them. 30
