E Days at school have been carefree and happy ones, but ' 'now we go forth into a world divided by hate and destru - tion. H H ' . Patriotismin its many forms is uppermost in the minds . V ot all good Americans today, so we of the Black and Ti Gold Statt have chosen Patriotism as the theme for our , book. We wish to convey through the pages of this book, the many ways in which we all may serve our country both on the battlefield and in everyday lite. ln the years to come, we shall perhaps, peruse these pages and recall the many happy days we spent at Central. ' I i l oJ .-A cj 'i 'U' , t....l..,.,..+, JA.. XYJX'j XZ! XYJXZJXYI s .al L A Grave Responsibility As this issue ot Black and Gold goes to press, our beloved country is' in the midst ot the most terrible vvar ot all time Our graduates know that theirs is to be a grave responsibility, a rare and high honor,-that ot saving America by actively helping to vvin this vvar. Some vvill do this in our armed torcesi Others vvill contribute their share in industry or commerce, or on the home tront. All vvill, vvithout tail, prove to the tull the worth and sincerity ot their patriotism in the grimly dangerous days that lie ahead, May they come through the struggle unharmed and successful. May they write a nevv and glorious chapter in the history ot this American high school,-their Alma Mater,-Central l-ligh. T, FRAlXlKl.l N WALSH Like other schools all over this nation, Central has gone to war. Some of her sons have made the supreme sacrifice on the battle fronts. Others are now engaged on those fronts and still others are following in their steps. Some are employed in war industries and their numbers are being increased almost daily, ln our class rooms, emphasis is being placed upon preparation for participation in that same war effort. ln the coming months, this preparation will be intensified many fold. Thus they are contributing loyally to the achievement of victory, which now seems almost certain even though we know not when it will come. But an even more important need is the assurance of a lasting peace that will give future generations the benefits of our way of life and the freedom it affords. We hope that, in the years succeeding our victory at arms, sons and daughters of Central will have the wisdom and the initiative to make their influence felt in the forging of that lasting peace, at home and abroad, for themselves and their posterity, HORACE l-l. l-IENDRICK 1 I is . .-5 K. Victorg COUTSQ NIILTON LIBERTY SHIPS SEA BEES QD ' Patriotism in War and peace ATRlOTlSiVl is not just the waving of the flag and the singing of the National Anthem. lt's the believing in, trusting in, and loving of one's country. We love our country, and because there is a war being waged, we should make our patriotism obvious There were great patriots in America whose names are inscribed in the story of their times. There were many humbler folk whose names have faded from our annals There were those who were never known outside their narrow village circle, but who struggled and suffered for the noblest motives, l-lowever, war brings out the worst as well as the best in ment lt is a mistake to think of America of i776 as a nation of patriots pressing their services to gain their freedom. lt was hard to get men for the Army in those days, but as small as it was at times, those brave soldiers held the flag flying in the field through love of their country and through confidence in a real patriot, General Washington, Today, men in uniform are defending our country not only because they hate their enemies, but because they have love of their country. They will go on defending their country even after this country defeats its enemies, The love of one's nation should be in the heart at all times, during times of war or times of peace. There is one thing we must learn, and that is, that patriotism does not end when war ends. lt is only when patriotism continues that we continue to live our life of freedom, Each one of us may not be pointed out as a patriot, but in our hearts we know that our love of America will keep America's wonderful flag waving in our homes, our schools, and on the battle fronts of the world. ANTHONY FIORE On the opposite page are members of the class of January '43 who left school to enter our armed services. At eighteen, many of them are battle-scarred veterans, one of them is dead. They have helped to keep the flag flying while we were getting ready. We are proud of them. 30 Zin itlllvmnriam ARTHUR THOMAS PEARSON killed ih actioh ih the South Pa- citic, October 23, T942 The tirst member ot the class ot Jah. A 70-yard sustained drive in the second period brought Central's first touchdown, Captain Bill then crashed over from the five yard line. He also kicked the extra point. In the third period, it was Morro who lateraled to Montecalvo for the second score. Bill also figured in the third touchdown when he shot a 22-yard pass to brother Al in the end zone. The whole Central line played heads-up ball, the standouts being Captain Bill Morro, Guglielmo, Murphy, Al Morro, and Montecalvo. CENTRAL 6, ST. RAPHAEL 7 A snappy St. Raphael team defeated an over-confident Central eleven, 7-6 after a hard fought battle, Central appeared to have all the bad breaks throughout the game. With Spinelli doing some fine running, Central finally scored. lt looked like Central's off day for the Golden Tide was in scoring territory several times but failed to score. Champion ball-snatcher-John Folcarelli, was outstanding on the defense and Spinelli led the offense. Captain Morro also played great ball. CENTRAL l9, WESTERLY 0 Central High blanked Westerly High l9-0 in a well-played ball game. Although Westerly invaded the Black and Gold territory, it was not strong enough to score. Captain Morro led the attack, starring on the offense as well as the defense, He was responsible for all three touchdowns, scoring twice- himself and passing to Evangelista for the third tally, Guglielmo, Murphy, Montecalvo, Spinelli, Gelsomino, and Captain Morro played notable ball for Central. CENTRAL 7, CRANSTON 0 Central's Golden Tide opened up its league schedule by winning over Cranston 7-O. Central outplayed Cranston all through the game, but fumbles handicapped the Tide, In the second period, Central sparked by Spinelli's long gains, marched 60 yards to the Cranston three, but fumbled. ln the final quarter, without the services of Captain Morro who was injured, Central began a march to win the game, With Coach Kutneski's voice ringing in every player's ears, Lou whitewash Gelsomino, hard- hitting back, scored after a 35-yard march, Montecalvo picked up l0 yards, Gelsomino ran for l2 more, and Montecalvo threw a short pass to Gelsomino to put the ball on the Cranston five. Gelsomino scored from there. Carbone kicked the extra point. Little almost scored on a pass interception which ended the game. The star performers of the day were Morro, Gelsomino, Spinelli, Montecalvo, and Kempf. CENTRAL l4, ROGERS 0 Scoring early in the game, Central defeated Rogers l4-0, lt was Central's game all the way through, but Rogers put up a rugged defense. Little registered the first Central score from the one yard line on a quarterback sneak, after the Tide had marched 57 yards with Spinelli and Gelsomino featuring. Montecalvo made the best run of the drive, a 26-yard gallop around right end on a naked reverse. After Little had scored, Carbone kicked the point. A few minutes later on two plays, Central went to the Rogers 45, then Montecalvo on a reverse romped to another touchdown. The stars were Montecalvo, Gelsomino, Little, and Ciolfi, CENTRAL l4, EAST PROVIDENCE 7 Playing under the lights for the first time this season, the Black and Gold topped the Townies i4-7. Central received the opening kickoff and marched straight down the field for its first score. After a series of running plays, Central took to the air, Montecalvo dropped back and shot a pass to Gelsomino, who scored. Carbone's kick was good. The second touchdown started on a beautiful 40-yard runback by Little who ran wild all through the game, Then Little rifled a 20-yard pass to Phelan who was downed on the 20-yard stripe. A pass interference gave Central the ball on the two-yard line. Here Gelsomino scored on an off-tackle play. Carbone converted the extra point. Kempf, Folcarelli, and Murphy had much to do with the victory, spilling the East Providence backs for losses during the entire game. CENTRAL 6, LA SALLE i3 ln its annual Armistice Day classic, a strong Golden Tide became the victims of La Salle l3-6. With four opportunities to score, the Tide could make but one successful, A blocked kick paved the way for the Central tally late in the third guarter, Ben Ciolfi, hardworking end, blocked a La Salle kick and fell on it on the La Salle two-yard line, Here Central called time out, The morale of the team was lifted when Capt. Morro entered the game, Morro, still recovering from an elbow dislocation, led the way for Spinelli on the next play, and the speedy Central back galloped through his right tackle for a touchdown. Carbone missed his first point-after-touchdown of the season when the wind took the ball wide of the goal posts, Spinelli played a superb game, starring on the offense as well as the defense, Much credit is due to Capt. Morro who risked further injury to play against the stubborn Maroon. Outstanding players for Central were Folcarelli, Spinnelli, Ciolfi, Gelsomino, and Kempf. Downs, first string centre, suffered a dislocated elbow, CENTRAL 6, MOUNT PLEASANT 6 Central and Mount Pleasant battled it out to a 6-6 deadlock at Pierce Memorial Stadium. Central held the edge at the end of the first half but could not produce another touchdown throughout the game. Because of weather conditions, both teams were handicapped by fumbles. Mount Pleasant threatened at the Black and Gold goal line three times but was able to score only once. The Tide put up one of its finest defensive plays of the whole season by holding Mount Pleasant on the four-yard line. Montecalvo and Morro, respectively, were the leading ground gainers for the afternoon, breaking into the clear a few times, though hampered by the wet, muddy field.
