Bailey, Art Theresa R. McKenna, English Prologue All too soon, do We bid farewell to you, Seniors of Central. You will leave the orderly and friendly surroundings of school life to enter and participate in the joys and sorrows of life. Unity or Cooperation will be as essential to you in the prob- lems that you Will be confronted with as it has been in mak- ing your school days happy. Therefore, we of the BLACK AND GOLD staff have selected Unity as the theme for your year- book. - The opening pages are designed to convey this idea of Unity either in school or in the world at large. As you explore the roads of life, we hope that you will occasionally rediscover this book and again recall happy mem- ories of days spent in Central. T. liRANKl.IN WALSl'l Principal - we stand ready This issue of BLACK AND GOLD comes out in the midst of a new world war,-a new and more terrible kind of war. The sacred, age-old values of human life are being methodi- cally, ruthlessly destroyed by the evil fanatics of the dictator hordes. Nation after nation has been hurled by them head- long into the black abyss of hopeless, despairing slavery. They plot our own utter destruction,-the destruction of our be- loved America. As loyal Americans,-teachers, graduates, and students of this American high school,-we stand ready to do our share for America. We shall help America win this war. With high praise, and with grim determination, we shall give our all, our very lives if need be, that American freedom may live. This is the true spirit of our Central High School. This is the spirit in which our graduates go out into the perilous days ahead. This is the spirit with which we who remain at Central shall carry on. America foreverl T. FRANKLIN' WALSH - some will fight In the past few months, We teachers have been conscious of an increasing eagerness on the part of our students to do their part in winning this terrible War in which our country is engaged. This desire is an indication of a spirit of which we all are proud and which is bound to bring ultimate vic- tory to our cause. I cannot doubt that the boys and girls who graduate from Central in the Class of June 1942 will carry on the finest traditions of the past. Some of them will be called upon to fight in our armed forces. Others will serve in the great army of industrialists Whose efforts will be the main support behind our men at the front. Whatever may be their individual roles, I am sure that Cen- tral's Roll of Honor will be a brilliant one and a comfort to all of us who will be with these young people in spirit and will Wish them every success in the difficult days ahead, and happiness in the peace We confidently hope to win. HORACE H. HENDRICK HORACIE HENDRICK Vice- Principal l J Acknowledgments The staff of the BLACK AND GOLD realizes that the task of editing and publishing Central High School's yearbook would indeed be a difficult task Without the ready assistance and cooperation which We have had from our many friends. Dr. Walsh, our principal, through his interest and encour- agement in our Work, has given the staff the incentive to pro- duce the best work We could. Mr. Mackintosh, the senior counselor, has been most Will- ing to help us at any time. To Mr. Breard, Miss Burnside of the Student Activities Office, Miss Greenwood, and the office staff for their aid and generosity in the use of office faculties, We wish to convey our gratitude. Mr. Fine of the Roberts Studio for his patient assistance to our photographers and other staff members, is deserving of our most wholehearted thanks. Our sincere thanks, too, are extended to Mr. Ralph Bick- ford of the Bickford Engraving and Electrotyping Company. We wish also to bestow our appreciation upon the advisers of organizations in Central. They have been most coopera- tive With the staff in connection with group pictures and ac- tivities. Most cordial appreciation should be extended to the mem- bers of the senior class and the BLACK AND GOLD Senior Com- mittee. We sincerely thank these people for their thoughtful and heartening interest in our yearbook-an interest which has turned what might have been a tedious task into a thoroughly pleasurable experience, FACULTY Edmund R if E ,lf g AJ I I Mc- The Faculty DR. They started the season in a mediocre fashion and ended triumphantly by placing third in the Interscholastic meet. The standouts of this season were Captain Joe Rossi in the hundredsg Joseph Monk Mandato, the New England runner-up in the high jump and broad jump: George Barnett at the broad jump and 300 g William Morro, the State and New England shot-put championg Carrol Randall in the 1,000, and Alfred Morro at the shot-put. The indoor track team is expected to have another successful se ason next year since several of the boys will be back. FENCING TEAM First Row. left to right: Mr. Katznelson, Instructor. There were tive wins, two ties, and three losses. Two of the three were lost by the small margin of one goal. This team had no individual stars but was fortunate to have two forward lines of almost equal ability and a stalwart defense. The prospects for next season look favorable with both forward lines back for further service. GYM TEAM First Row, left to right: H. Goloses. R. Ferrazza, R. Westnedge. S. Onysko. M WRESTLING The Golden Tide's wrestling squad, under the able coaching of Mr. Beachen, turned out two state champions, Robert Ferrazza and John Capezza. John Capezza, the captain of this year's team, took top honors in the 145-pound class, which was the result of being undefeated for the entire season. Bob Ferrazza and Frank Spinelli, co-captains of next year's squad also did a line job in their respective classes. Bob Ferrazza, who lost all his previous bouts on close decisions, made a beautiful comeback to defeat his opponent and win the state championship of the 135-pound class. Roland Nose Onorato, after having qualified in the finals, in the state meet, lost on a close decision to John Riccitelli of Mt. Pleasant. Those leaving their Alma Mater, are A'Cap John Capezza, Nose Roland Onorato, and James Lynch. Lynch who for some time had been one of Central's mighty matmen had to drop out after having been injured. During that time, he had won two bouts and lost one. Mr. Beachen has a fine set of boys left to make up Central's Mighty matmen for the com- ing year. K BASKETBALL The l942 basketball season got underway with the Central team apparently still feeling the after-effects of the Christmas vacation. Coach A'Bill Kutneski's quintet opened the season in a very wobbly fashion as they dropped their lirst three games. From that point on, Central ended its season with five wins and nine losses, leaving Cranston behind in the Western Division stand- ings. The Central quintet turned in consistently fine work during the latter part of the season- but with a few more breaks Central might have come through with a play-off berth. Central's basketball team consisted mostly of seniors, leaving John Arzoomanian, Bill Carty, Vin Picone, and Lou Gelsomino for next year's nucleus. Appearing for the last time in a Cen- tral uniform were Nick Apostolou. Syl La Fauci, Mal Kenney, Al La Porte, and George Pariseault who are graduating this year. 74 LITERATURE J.JlJ..J IEEE UQ YJ 'lj A UNITY . We the people of the United States did not become war conscious until about three to realize that there is a war to be won, and , to have any chance of victory, all groups in r our country must work together with unity Q of purpose. We must all accept with good L 4 Q grace the limiting of the use of sugar, rubber 4 B' ' goods, and other restricted conveniences as one of the sacrifices necessary to the war effort. We have been wasteful in the years of plenty, and now for a change, it will be good for us to practice thrift. Benjamin Franklin once said Either we hang together, or else we shall hang separately. He wished to stress unity in the minds of his fellow men and spur them on to a victorious ending of the Revolution. We, like those early Americans, must have a spirit of brotherhood and make these United States oper- ate like one big machine with super-abundant strength. Let us not wander from our high ideals. Let us think, act, and live as good citizens of this great nation. Let us hope and pray that in the future we shall be able to say, united we stood and won . G g F itil Y th g N h dd ly ' Q 4 .' mon s a o. ow we ave come su en w' r RUDOLPH BOFFI COOPERATION AND UNITY BETWEEN NATIONS With the dreadful example before us of disunity in Europe today, many of us are beginning to realize that liberty and brutal might cannot exist together in this present world. In this war of today, where all nations are fighting for their mere existence, it is impossible for any nation to ind security in isolation. No one nation is really safe until all are secure. All nations should cooperate and be united. As we know, Hitler accom- plishes his work by dividing and isolating nations, then conquering. Our pro- tection and safety will lie in a union of nations working in cooperation one with the other. In the interest of peace and democracy, it is imperative that the world- neighborhood be organized to prevent anarchy and to secure individual freedom and equal access to raw materials. We the people of the United States of America should cooperate to the ut- most, and try with all our might not to hinder but to help our national adminis- tration in its efforts to preserve our way of living. We must be true to our demo- cratic philosophy and establish its principles throughout our nation and among nations. Plans cannot be postponed for the future because tomorrow may be much too late. History has taught us that civilization will triumph over barbarismg we all hope so, and it is our duty to make it so. There should be union among all nations of this earth. Benjamin Franklin who had a broad, international mind once said: l'God grant that not only the love of liberty but a thorough knowledge of the rights of man may pervade all the nations of the earth, so that a philosopher may set his foot anywhere on its surface and say, 'This is my countryf LEILA LAKE 7 6 NATIONAL UNITY By RALPH JOHNSON National unity is one of the most essential and desirable qualities a govern- ment may possess. Without national unity, a government may exist, but not for long. An example of what may happen may be seen in Spain. It would still be a world power' if its people had been unified. Her people are still suffer- ing untold hardships and are liable to suffer them for a long time to come. National unity is needed during wartime. Disunity of a nation during a war results in havoc to that nation. The predicament of Norway illustrates the disastrous effects of a people divided. A'Fifth Columnists in Norway were not loyal to their government: thus, the invasion of the Germans was made pos- sible, We Americans must not let that happen over here, We must guard and protect our interests, and we must all be united in the one purpose of winning the war. The farmer, the laborer, and the capitalist must all put their efforts into winning this war, not for personal profit, but for the sake of freedom and Amer- ica. There must not be any 'fgrabbingn or profiteering in this great war of the nations. All political parties must give up their bickering and unite for the eventual downfall of democracy's enemies. Without unity the gigantic task of defending America's rights and liberties will be difficult to perform. All classes, all parties, all races must unite in Amer- ica's supreme effort to keep the world free. lt is by unity, cooperation, and sacri- ice that the United States will come through victorious. STRENGTH IN UNION By CHRISTOPHER DOYLE Many, many centuries ago, an elderly father gathered his sons about him, and surveying them with saddened eyes, he spoke to them with a voice that echoed and reechoed down the centuries of time. My sons, it has come to my ears that you plan to depart from my house and pursue your fortunes separately, and through your endeavors raise the name of our family to one of strength and renown . Yes father , answered the eldest son, I for one plan to leave our home and rise in the outside world to give my family a place of eminence and power . And l too , joined the other brothers in unison. A deep silence reigned. Thoughts, trembling thoughts, raced through the minds of the foolish sons. Then the sorrowful father spoke, Go you into the forests, my sons, and fetch me the faggots that you can hold in one hand . The time went by slowly for the aged father as he waited patiently for his sons' re- turn. Then one by one they appeared from the dark gloom of the forest carrying the sticks which they had been ordered to acquire. Drawing his sons around him, the old man with an anxious voice resumed his conversation. 'flt is your desire to leave my home each separately to strengthen our family position. Oh! To foolish youth it is bootless to plead or explain, Joseph, continued the old man, Udo you think that you can break one of the sticks? Joseph was the strongest son of the family and was startled at such a seem- ingly ridiculous question. Of course, replied the bewildered son, Hwith as much effort as it would take to lift a feather. 77 So saying, he took the stick in his hands and with little pressure broke it in pieces. Now, said the father, 'Ado you think you could break the sticks which your brothers hold, if I took those sticks and bound them into a bundle? i'Of course, replied Joseph irritated, 'ibut why all this nonsense? Ignoring Joseph's remark, the old man tied the remaining sticks together forming one large bundle. With a half expectant, half hopeful air he handed the bundle to Joseph. Confidently Joseph placed the bundle across his knee and -with all the pressure his great muscles could apply tried to snap the bundle of faggots, but without success. I, I don't understand, stammered the embarrassed Joseph, the single stick was so easy to break. Chagrined, Joseph retreated to an obscure position behind his brothers. These sons were men strong and wise, yet they were children weak and un- wise. They had learned the words of Aristotle, Plato, and Socrates: they had the wisest teachers of the age. But they lacked the teachings of life's greatest teacher, experience. They lacked the wisdom of old age. Triumphantly the father addressed his children. HUnity is God's own plan. The rains that fall in the spring moisten the crops on all my lands. The crops in turn nourish our bodies and store in us great energy so that we may build our homes and work daily for existence. With- out the rain we would have no crops: without the crops we could not live. Yet, what is rain? It is innumerable, insignificant little drops of water, that if alone, would dry up and disappear in the rays of the noonday sun. i'Our mighty earth, whose immensity stag- gers the human imagination, is composed of elements so minute that they are unable to be seen by the human eye. A'Do you still think, my sons, that you may gain strength by separation? Again the eldest son answered for all his brothers. We beg your forgiveness, father, for our stupidity, for now we see that in unity there is strength, and only with unity can we exist. In all problems, in all difliculties only the united will survive. A single stick may be broken, but bound with other sticks it be- comes unbreakable. i 78 IBMQ, 2-Ygt V B I 2 5 s V 3 N F 3 1 ,WWW A ss S+?
