THE EDITORS. r?,, , T. lfu,xx141.1 N XVAI Foreword Once again ffl-IE BLACK AND CLOLD connotes a new era in the varied history of our school. Restored anew to the single session day, students and teachers alike rejoice in the freedom and progress that this change has Wrought. A good beginning has been made.-the future looks bright ahead. Under the able direction of Mr. Alfred S. Cleaves. these pages chronicle the interests and activities ol' our students, particularly ol the graduate class. May they all, in the years to come, find pleasure and inspiration in reviewing these pages. And may all success and hap- piness attend the graduates of January l939,-the first to be graduated from the single session Central I-ligh School. T. FRANKLIN WA1.sll as ,fix The Class ol January 1939 graduates at a time when the world is greatly troubled. Conllicting lorms of political philosophy have already aroused great distrust and hatred in Europe and in the Orient. An undeclared war is being waged in China and jittery Europe fears momentarily to be awakened from a lretful sleep by the booming ol guns. XVe in the United States are trying to emerge from a serious and prolonged depression. The problems which we must solve have many political implications. XVe believe as a nation in the democratic lorm of government. This beliel implies intelligent participation on the part ol our citizensg it calls lor the assumption of a delinite and constant responsibility. The boys and girls who are graduating lroin Central will soon become voting citizens who, il' they assume this responsibilty as I believe they will, are going to become sell-sustaining members of society and are going to help to perpetuate those institutions which guarantee lile, liberty and the pursuit of happiness to themselves and the generation to follow. There is a challenge and an opportunity awaiting these boys and girls: a challenge and an opportunity distinctly American. Our nation, now in her adolescence, offers as much to thrill her young people as did the young America to her pioneers. Of course, it is not just the same. No, but the elements ol adventure and oppor- tunity still exist. The graduates of Central for some years to come can rest assured of this fact. I believe that they will take advantage ol these opportunities as individuals and as citizens according to the best traditions of our educational institutions, So near is grandeur to the dust, So near is God to man, Vlhen Duty whispers low, 'ATliou must! The youth replies, I can! HORACE H. HENDRICK it 3 i Xxx I ,W X N GQSQS fx? The Facuky DR. T. FRANKLIN IVALSH, Princijnal HORACE H. HENDRICK, Vice Principal LUCY H. NIOLLOY CCQYIIIIILISTIIIIIJ STOCK CLERK GEORGE A. FARR Acknowledgments january, 1939 Dear Render,- Cooperation is a necessary element in producing any high school publication. XVithout the support of their friends, the staffs could not accomplish much. The Editors of Tutti BLACK AND GOI.D have found this to be true, and wish to pause in the day's occupation for a moment to express our appreciation to those persons who have so willingly and ably given their aid to the members of Tina BLACK AND Goin board. To Dr. XValsh, our principal, we give due gratitude. Ever ready to lend his assistance, kind in his criticism, generous in his encour- agement, and sincere in his interest, he has made possible our de- veloping a yearbook of higher quality than we could have without his help. To Mr. Hendrick, our vice-principal, we are indeed grateful. XVitl1 his cooperation we have been able to work more efhciently. Miss Palmer, counselor of the se11ior class, has been most willing to help us at any time. In connection with the club write-ups and pictures, effusive thanks are due Mr. Philbrick, school coordinator, and club advisers. Mr. Chase, head of the English department, Mr. Hlebb, Miss Dahlgren, and Miss Bosworth have acted as the faculty committee to judge the material for illflli BLACK AND Goin awards. NVC express our deep appreciation to Mr. Bickford of the Bick' ford Engraving and Electrotyping Company, to Mr. Brouth of the L. H. Bellini Studio, and to Mr. John F. O'Hara of the Oxford Press, who have aided us immensely in our work. Mr. Lyons of the commercial department, teachers of senior home rooms, and Miss Turner and oilice staffs have cooperated with us greatly. Think of these people, reader, as you turn the pages of this issue of Central High School's yearbook. Very truly yours, THE ED1ToRs QKXQ KS THE BLACK AND ELMORE B. Howey er, abot1t fottr 1110111115 ago, 1 learned there is a Yltst tlillerence between act11al a11d instigated e111otio11s. On reaching 1101116 after school o11 the 1lay of 1l1e lILl1'1'1- cane, 1 was greeted wi1l1 tl1e news 111111 t11e chitnneyf had fallen 1111 our house at Sliawomet, and that llly brother and 1 were to go 111111 clear olf whatever loose bricks re- 11121111011 011 tl1e roof. We started-inunetliately i11 1116 211110- inobile. lhe first five 11111111105 of 1l1e trip were 11s u11- eventfttl as lilly other day, except for tl1e noticeably 11igl1 windsg but in the latter part of the ri1le we experienced dangers of all descriptions. 'l'he roads, wet lillil strewn with slippery Cl'llSl1CLl green leaves, C2lllSCtl the car to swerve 1lZlllgCl'Ol.1Sly 111 every curve. Still later, we were forced to wi1111 and squeeze between fallen trees which littered tl1e road. After passing onto a clear stretch of road, our fear of being caught beneath falling trees was succeeded by the terror ol' running i11to live wires. To avoid otl1er dangers we had to drive o11 sidewalks, through gasoline stations, t11ke 1letours, and even 1lrive over fallen fences a111l tl1ro11gl1 front yards. XVC finally 2llD2lIlC1OllCfl t11e car in ll clear lot abotit ll l1alf-mile from our house. As soon 11s we reacl1e1l the more thickly poptt- late1l section we saw people running back and forth like frightened rabbits. My brother an1l 1 trie1l to stop il few to ask what was going on, but they continued to rush by us. A1 last we took hold of a running Illllll, 1101 letting go 1111til he l1a1l explained tl1e happenings to 11s. Xve gath- ere1l from his words 1.11211 great waves were washing four or live feet over the S611 walls 1111d 111111 already knocke1l 1low11 several 11011565 Zllltl garages. It was then that we realized tl1e 1la11ger of the great wind. XVe bolted for ottr l1o11se, wl1ic11 was Oll the i11la111l e111l of tl1e point. O11 getting there, we had to wade lllI'OllglI l'Ollll1g suri tip our front steps i11 order to enter the house. Ive heaped the flll'1l1lll1'C i11 such a way that should a few i11ches of WZILCI' seep in, as little furniture as possible would be damaged. XVhen a large wave shook the l1o11se Zlllll sent great sheets of 1VlllCl' through the windows, we left the furniture a111l Tllll out of the house, through the water, now some three feet 1leep, to 11 neighbors home just a few hundred feet back, set on higher ground. Front our new refuge, we could see the powerful wi111l whip the bay as a teaspoon would stir a cupful of tea. Great waves battered at OIII' ,H house, a111l having broken all the windows 211111 doors were Ylllllllllg ElIlAOllgl1 tl1e 1001115 a111l playing havoc with the furniture that we had tried to keep dry only a few niin- utes before. Suddenly the win1l grew stronger, and directed ll series of gigantic, towering waves. Though I afterwards learned that tl1e waves were some twenty' feet high, the poor vision caused by the N'llId.'lll'lYCll Water made the waves see111 to extend without en11 into the sky. Our house stood tl1e first few waves, but a terrific great co111ber cr11sl1e1l it as ll fist would crt1sl1 a match box. It is i111possible to 1le- scribe i11 detail tl1e destruction of all tl1e l1o11ses close to the water, b11t in general, the coming of dusk gave the entire scene tl1e aspect of a nightmare. 'l'he greatness an1l the power of the wind and water wo11l1l make any atheist ll God-fearing soul. It gave me tl1at feeling of inferiority tl1at one has when witnessing a scene of disaster 011 the screen, bitt o11 21 ll1llClI greater scale. Tl1e disasters wl1icl1 I had seen before were all more or less localized. The ravages of the great wi111l, on tl1e other han1l, see111ed to be universal: it stoo1l before yo11, beside you, crept llp behind y0ll, I'llIIIlJlCd beneath. hovered over you, and left no way of escape. That night, in the city again, wl1e11 everything had 1taln1e1l and nothing but ll strong breele was left of the gigantic wind, we went out to see what had happened in other sections of the town. It was not long before we heard news of many bodies recovered, scores missing, llllll' dreds of homes washed away. 111111 others blotted o11t. The saddest and most staggering blow came wl1e11 we received news of personal friends ,and neighboring families wiped Ollf of existence. Together witl1 the loss of life and prop- erty came the IICWS of broken communications, blocked roads, cut-out power lines. 11nd danger fro111 polluted drinking water. Strangely enough, thoughts of hghting chanipiotis, glamorous stars, great politicians, an1l other celebrated individuals came to my mind an1l appeared as mice against a mountain. I a111 thankful that ours was a loss of property only, and I am grateful to the hurricane for the deeper religious conviction that I can now ll'llllI- fully say I possess. I also wish to mention that I now know what a great difference there is between acttial emo- tions, and those brought abotit by artificial means. A very important factor in one's appearance is that unruly growth generally known as the head covering or hair. It doesn't matter what color it is or was made to be, it still is there and grows. Would that some brilliant genius could invent something that stops the growth of hair blll allows it to retain its natural appearance! Of course, this would be hard on the barbers, bitt what is their opinion as opposed to that of literally millions of people? They could get jobs in the factories manufactur- ing this marvelous preparation. I'ntil this heavenly sub- stance is found, however. we will still have to endure the unholy snip, snip of the barber's scissors. The barber shop is very deceiving. The spaciotts and comfortable chairs, large mirrors. and entertaining maga- zines all add to make the victim forget the torture that is about to come upon hitu. This outside covering for the unscrupulous trade of hair-ctttting had no effect on the eternal prejudice I held against my barber, though. .Xs soon as he had me seated he smiled and tucked a bib-like cloth chokingly' around my neck as if I were a baby. To this I simply set n1y jaw and looked at my cottntenance in the tnirror. Suddenly, as if out of nowhere. came a sound resembling that of a thousand bees buzzing behind my ears. Then I felt a deadly cool vibrating instrttment ol torture begin its merciless job,-the electric clipper. I sat with 1uy lists clenched and tny teeth pressed hard against each other. as the wicked machine sent shivers up and down my spine. After he had Iinished with the back of my neck. the barber started the ear pushing LICI, which is the ruthless pressing forward of the ear in order to get at the hair behind it. As a result of this experience I found out why I and other nnfortunates like me have donkey ears. which are organs of hearing bent forward more than usual. The barber had a very Ctlle little dog in the shop. I told the barber that he seemed very fond of watching the man cut hair. The barber said. 'Alt isn't that. Sometimes I snip oll' a bit of the customer's ear. My heart went down to my toes, came back up ami smacked me in the pharynx where it lodged for the rest of the operation. I broke out into a cold sweat, but I decided to face it like a man. I didn't grit my teeth this titne for fear they might rattle. The barber said to me. 'AI'lease put your head down. XVhether I didn't do it fast enough, or I didn't put it down far enough, I don't know, but a huge brown hand wrapped itself arotlnd my neck and forced my head into a horizontal position. This time the barber used the always dull and pinching hand clipper. The continuous click, click of the rusty instrtnnent made me want to yell, but I restrained myself. Suddenly I felt my head being practically jerked ottt of its socket as the barber began the next step in the pro- cedure. This is the barber's method of grabbing and cutting the thick hair on the top of the skull, which makes one feel as if the hair is being pttlled Olll by the 1'00ls. I sympathized with my poor hair as I saw it scat- tered all around the chair. .Xt last the end was near, when the barber would wet and comb my hair. Before he soaked my hair with liquid I took a glance at the next victims of the barber who were waiting for hitn to get through with mc. The ones who were not in any special hurry smiled at me. while those who wanted to get elsewhere very soon looked on im- patiently' as if they thought that the barber was spending too tnuch time on my glowing tresses. Then cattle the tidal wave. The barber aimed for my head, Init somehow the water seemed to gush all over me. The narrow necked bottle with which the barber was squirting water on my head and elsewhere soon deposited suflicient liquid on my hair to make it wet enough for him to comb. I got up from the chair after the combing. removed the hideous bib. and took a deep breath. .Xfter paying the inlnuuan gentleman. tffor what man could be human after making a fellow being sulIer?j I quickly left the scene of my agony. .Ks I departed, I felt like a free mann-but gloom quickly descended upon me, for I realiled that I would have to go through this same tortnent again in two or three weeks. Xvoe is man for all the miseries he puts himself through to be presentable to society! 45 A Directory of Central Clubs CAFETERIA MARSHALS Captain, Edward MacNeil Sergeant Major, XV. With Popcorn Swiderski and XVild Bill McCoy alternating in carrying tl1e ball, Central lost little time pushing over its first touchdown in the first quarter. Late in the second period McCoy set up the Black and Colds second score by a brilliant thirty- yard run. Cl-INTR.-XL vs. MT. PLEASANT Q0ctober 15, l938j With a strong. hard-fighting team, Central crushed an inexperienced Mt. Pleasant. 32-0. Wild Bill McCoy again was the spearhead of the attack, scoring two touch- downs in the short time he played. Other touchdowns were made by Popcorn Swiderski, Skip Del Cioppio and joe I.a Ifauci. CICNTRAL vs. CRANSTON fOctober 22, 19385 The Golden 'fide won its third straight victory from the league defending champion, Cranston, by the score ol 20-0. The first tally resulted early in the second period when McCoy crossed the goal line, traveling fifty-seven yards in six plays. Early in the last quarter, McCoy' broke loose to run thirty-nine yards for the second score, and five minutes later. Wild Bill dashed twenty-four yards around the left end, accounting for the final touchdown. CENTRAL vs. EAST PROVIDENCE QOctober 29, 1938j Central's bid for an unbeaten season was smashed by the East Providence '1'ownies as the Colden 'l'ide was hmnbled by a 7-0 score. The stage was set for the Townie tally by a tactical Central fumble which gave the ball to East Providence on Central's thirteen yard line, after which Fontes brought it to the two yard line. Central's forward wall then stopped two line plunges, but Fontes finally scored oll' tackle. CENTRAL vs. ROGERS QNovember 5, 1938j In a thrill-packed game, the Golden Tide conquered Rogers' team by the score of 12-6. Resorting to spread formations, Rogers completed nineteen passes out of thirty attempts, with Campbell hurling and Elliot receiving. On his first attempt, McCoy streaked around the right wing for twelve yards and was followed by Swiderski, who picked up eleven yards in two plays. Wild Bill skirted the end for nine yards more, and then handed a reverse to Sally ' Cotroneo who scored. Five minutes later Pop- corn Swiderski heaved a thirty-five yard pass to Cotroneo who again scored standing up. Elliot's touchdown came in the final quarter. CENTRAI. vs. LA S.-XLLE QNovember ll, 19355 Playing before a crowd of 9,000, an underdog Central eleven shattered La Salle's dream of an undefeated, un- tied season by holding the Maroon yluggernaut to a ti-ti deadlock. With Bowen and Nieratko alternating in car- rying the pigskin in the third period, I.a Salle made it first and ten on Central's six yard line. After two attempts to buck Central's forward wall had resulted in a six yard loss, Nieratko passed to Bowen in the end lone for the first score. NVith the final period half over, it was Central's ball on its own twenty when Swiderski heaved his memor- able pass to joe Morra. who ran sixty yards to a touch- down. CEN'l'R.XI. vs. WALTH.-XXI CNovember 19, 1938j A courageous Central eleven invaded the XVatch City aml limited the highly' touted YValtham gridsters to a last minute ti-fl score. With neither team able to push across a touchdown in the first three quarters, Hlaltham made a determined effort to score in the final period. XVith but a minute and a half remaining in the game, Camineti scored from the five yard line on a spinner from Johnstone. Glasberg blocked the try for the extra point. CENTR.-XI. vs. HOPE QNovember 2-f, l938j In a game featured by the loose line play of both teams, a powerful Hope eleven subdued Central 26-13 in their annual turkey' day clash. 'ALil Abner Slater bore the brunt of the Hope attack. while McCoy and Swiderski again sparked Central's goalward drives. McCoy scored both touchdowns against the Bitte XVave. Little mention has been made heretofore in these ac- counts of the great line play of Central's forgotten seven. As has often been pointed out, it is the line which opens the holes for the backs to make their touchdowns and re- ceive the plaudits of the crowds. Clasberg, Holloway, lfiori. Calise. Lynch.
