We have striven to lead you through the various doorways of high school life at Central, and to preserve the golden memories acquired during this, one of your treasured high school years. With this purpose in mind, we, the members of Arrow Board, take great pride in presenting this, your Arrow for 1965. L... This Is DEDICATIO . .. For over three decades Miss Hannah Buss has brought to her students the wonders of the world of science. Countless numbers of students have passed through her door in expectation of the knowledge which she had to offerg and she gave it unselfishly. Her reward? Seeing those countless num- bers pass out of C-34 with a better un- derstanding of the world around them. We the Seniors, remember the leaf projects, field trips, crayfish dissections, and planaria under the microscopeg but among the most enjoyable events of our high school career were those evenings in the spring which she helped make so memorable-the Proms. So to you, Hannah Buss, in apprecia- tion for the knowledge, the memories, and a job well-done, we the Class of '65 dedicate this ARROW. 5 Arrow Staff Editor-in-Chief .... Each school morning, most of our dedicated teachers entered North door Central, beginning another day of instruction. Whether to a lab, to a blackboard, or to a basket- ball court, they gave to us, their students, a portion of the knowledge which they had brought with them through these doors. It was up to us to make use of the clay's teaching, so that when the teachers left school, here, at the end of the day, their job had been completed success fully, North door Central was known generally as the teacher's entrance. 11 J. Never in our his- tory has a high school diploma meant so much to an individual. For all of you, this should be your first step in your training. Our changing times make it absolutely essential to plan further education if you are going to reach any degree of success in any type of future work. You are leaving Central with mixed emotions. At the present time, you are too close to Central to evaluate objec- tively our contribution to you. Ten years from now, you will be able to do this, and when you do, I sincerely hope We will receive a passing grade. My thanks for the fine contributions you have made to Central the past three years. My best Wishes go with you as you continue your training. C. H. Holgate Willard E. Ellis, Principal of Central High School It gives me great pleasure to con- gratulate this senior class upon its grad- uation from high school. I hope that in the long years ahead all of you will continue to Work toward pre- paring yourselves for constructive ca- reers. Classes -- I ,f-522 '? - At one time or another during each school day, every Centralite passed through South door Central at least onceg either by running to catch that eight o'cloclc class, by dashing to Washington and the lunch line, or by dragging himself homeward after a four olcloclc class finally ended. That we gained therein was important indeed, but even more important was that we left something worth- while to Central in return for those opportunities which had been ours for the taking. South door Central was nearly every studentls entrance. Second-semester voting resulted in an all-male victory. Tom Daschel, presidentg Tom Roth, Vice-presidentg and Ron Gardner, secretary had the honor of leading the grand march at the Junior- Senior Prom. None of us will ever forget the special assemblies, the days de- voted to government and careers, the speech events, and, of course, the plays which were planned and presented in this building. Each Centralite will remember the moments of an- ticipation before one of those glorious occasions which have become traditional at Central. These are the doors of memory-the doors of the Civic Theater. er-ff 'A CindereIIa's Ball Lights dimmed as the first strains of the Pageant Day melody drifted through the air amidst the glitter of a stage set as Cinderella's Ball. Thus the 46th Pageant Day festivities be- gan with the coronation of the new queen and marshal. John Kline, master of ceremonies, opened the coronation introducing the 1964 royalty. Queen nominees were Marilyn Hieb, Robertta Fossum, Marsha Kettering, Linda Larson, Joyce Stiles, Sherry Klingman, Barb Wallace, and Andi Arnold. Marshal nominees included Steve Amundson, Tom Daschel, Dave Ziegler, Tom Roth, Ron Klipfel, Jim Fiala, Rich Omland, and Ron Gardner. The Bachelors, Jerry Lusk, Mik'e Upton, Dennis Disbrow, Mike Murray, and Keith Baggett, then entertained the royalty and the student body with several songs. Ken Hanson played an accordian solo lead- ing up to the final moment. The audience was hushed as the announce- ment was read. Amid the cheers of their class- mates, Marsha Kettering and Steve Amundson were crowned the 1964 Pageant Day Queen and Marshal by last year's queen, Lorie Long, who is now a student at the University of South Dakota, and retiring marshal, Arlo Fossum, who attends Northern State College. Following the corona- tion, Mike Baldridge, vice president of Student Council presented Queen Marsha with a beautiful bouquet of red roses. The Minstrels Four, comprised of Candy Erickson, Linda Hunstad, Sue Brewer, and Linda Kessler, then presented a number, and the eve- ning was topped off by The Group, an instru- mental quartet consisting of Dennis McDermott, Jon Stablein, Jose Miranda, and Chuck Gugel, who brought bursts of screams and cheers from the student body with two numbers, Sincerely and Twist and Shout. Friday morning, the student body attended a rousing pep assembly where Renee Milbrandt and Lauri Dano, juniors, and Dianne Anderson and Connie Guhin, sophomores, were introduced as the new B squad cheerleaders. The were initiated by the A squad. Clear, sunny weather prevailed during the afternoon as Central's band led 39 floats through town to Simmons Field. The theme for the pa- rade was Fantasy Land. That afternoon the Aberdeen Juniors fell to Faulkton with a score of 26-0. The tension and excitement in the air was felt by everyone who attended the homecoming game Friday night. The Aberdeen Golden Eagles trounced the Mitchell Kernels 33-0. Spirits were still high as Queen Marsha and Marshal Steve reigned over the Pageant Day dance held in the Civic Arena. Chuck Mewing and his band provided the music. Other Pageant Days will come, but the mem- ories of the 1964 homecoming will linger on forever. 77 6 Q O ,Kinda av.-'X If w ef' 0,2202 GQ? 4200 96 ea 05506 Ljnafzslza fjfetfefzing Steve uqmunalson ...F fora up . . One of the most important decisions is to choose one's life occupation. To help one in reaching his decision, Central has a Career Day. Career Day gives each student a chance to attend three sessions of his choice on different vocations. In this Way students become informed on different vocations. General sessions are held during the day where stu- dents are informed on the importance of having a so- cial security number. The Eagles went down, 26-0, after shoving the Little Ma- roons all over Simmons Field in a promising display of grid- power. Three Eagle drives failed to produce TD's, but the squad's 'never say die' attitude kept Aberdeen in the game to the last second. The Eagles lost one touchdown on a penalty, missed another when time ran out at the half, and fumbled on a third period chance that had reached the Sioux City three-yard stripe. Steve Amundson and Chuck Keeler carried the brunt of the attack, however, Ron Klipfel, the brightest Eagle of the game, turned in an out- standing defensive job. The non-conference loss did not hurt the Eagle's ESD Con- ference standing for '64, Ex- perience was what the Eagles went after and it was what they came out with. The Eagles tallied seven points in the first quarter and raised the score to 20-0 at the half. Aberdeen's defense was even more impressive than its of- fense. Mitchell never got within 44 yards of a touch- down. This penetration oc- curred When the Kernels re- covered an Aberdeen fumble on the 45 yard line. The Eagles' superiority is shown in yards gained, 248 to 53 yards by Mitchell. It was a successful Pageant Day. Steve Amundson and Chuck Keeler led the six-touchdown parade. Amundson scored three times on short plunges, while Keeler had a 65-yard run for the longest touch- down. Steve Finley got the other touchdowns, one a reverse from 49 yards o-ut. Amundson added two extra points with Dave Ziegler and Stu Conley getting one apiece. The Eagles had period leads of 6-0, 20-0, 34-0 and the final score of 40-0. The Arrows had 15 straight victories prior to this season and were 4-0 for the 1964 campaign. The Eagles turned out one of the finest displays of grid power of the season. Steve Amundson starred on an 87-yard kick-off return during th e third quarter. Steve Finley, Chuck Keeler, and Ron Klipfel supplemented Amundson's t h r e e touch- downs to help write the final tally. Keeler punched over for two TD's, while Finley and Klipfel each scored once. There's nothing in our conference to stop them, said Cal Mathison, Madison ath- letic director, after the con- vincing Aberdeen victory. This is one of the finest foot- ball teams I've seen around here in years. The Eagles used passes and power, completing 6 out of 11 aerials for 116 yards and gaining 201 on the ground for an impressive 317 yards from scrimmage. 170 ABERDEEN DROPS HURON A fired-up Huron team made a great try for an upset, but Aberdeen weathered the assault and scored a 20-6 victory. Steve Amundson scored two touchdowns and Stu Conley one. Each ran for one extra point. Aberdeen gained 260 yards from scrimmage while Huron managed 158 yards. The Eagles had the advantage in first downs, 9-8. Finley, Keeler, Omland, Klipfel, and Hurlbert, in addition to Amundson and Conley, all played important roles in the victory. -61, .. , .1 Doug Bittner Stu Conley Line Back Bob Oltman Steve Amundson Back EAGLES DROP BOBCATS The Aberdeen Central High School football squad cap- tured its fifth consecutive victory on October 23, defeat- ing the Brookings Bobcats here 14-7. This clinched for the Eagle eleven at least a tie with Watertown for the East- ern South Dakota Conference championship. Steve Finley scored in the first quarter and Steve Amundson added the extra point. In the fourth quarter, Amundson romped 38 yards for the TD and Stu Conley scampered over for the extra point, giving Aberdeen a 14-0 lead. Brookings scored with a touchdown pass climaxing a 91-yard march. The Cats kicked the extra point with 25 seconds showing on the clock. That's how the game ended, a 14-7 win for the Eagles over the Bobcats. Chuck Keeler was a fine ground gainer for Aberdeen, and Bob Luce, Mike Breidenbach, and Ron Klipfel turned in excellent perform- ances on defense. Back Steve Finley Back Dave Ziegler Back ABERDEEN TIES YANKTON The Aberdeen Golden Eagles clinched the Eastern South Dakota Conference title by playing Yankton to a 6-6 tie. The first half was scoreless, although the Eagles were stopped on the Yankton one- foot line. The Bucks drew first blood in the third quart- er when they scored after fall- ing on a fumble at the Eagle 17-yard line. Aberdeen tied the score late in the fourth quarter when Stu Conley scampered six yards around left end. Steve Finley set up the TD by receiving a fumbled punt deep in Yankton terri- tory. The try for the extra point was unsuccessful. The Eagle's usually powerful of- fense couldn't get going as motion penalties and fumbles offset any significant gains.
